The announced multi-year agreement is a planned purchase—not proof that thousands of vehicles are already in service. The companies have not disclosed the exact order size, contract value, or delivery locations.
What Amazon is buying
The TM-Q is a four-wheeled electric vehicle that the rider operates by pedaling, with motor assistance. It is not a conventional bicycle, an autonomous vehicle, or a Rivian delivery van. Also markets it for both commercial fleets and personal cargo use, with hardware and software that can be adapted to fleet needs. Also’s product page describes the vehicle and its intended uses.
TechCrunch reported that the commercial vehicle is designed to carry more than 400 pounds of packages. That figure is from the October 2025 announcement coverage; the reviewed sources do not provide an independent payload test or a jurisdiction-specific certified rating. The Amazon version is expected to be customized for delivery operations, but its final production configuration has not been published. TechCrunch’s October 22, 2025 report describes the agreement and reported capacity.
What the agreement does—and does not—establish
The October 2025 report describes a multi-year commercial agreement under which Amazon intends to obtain thousands of TM-Qs for the United States and Europe. It says the companies will tailor the vehicles to Amazon’s delivery needs. It does not identify a precise quantity, purchase price, contract value, first cities, or whether Amazon will own every vehicle or use another fleet arrangement. Nor does it establish whether Amazon employees or delivery-service partners will operate them.

- Four wheel suspension
- Panoramic glass roof
- Popular Colors: Available in Forest Green and Glacier White
Also said the TM-Q would launch in spring 2026. That was an announced target, not a verified delivery milestone. The sources cited here do not establish how many vehicles Amazon has received or whether large-scale deployment has begun.
Also is separate from Rivian, but remains connected
Also began as a Rivian internal project and later spun out as a standalone company. TechCrunch reported that Rivian retained a minority stake, while Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe joined Also’s board. Rivian’s technology, fleet experience, retail presence, and purchasing scale remain strategic ties; they do not make Also a Rivian division or mean Rivian is the manufacturer named in the Amazon agreement.
The relationship matters to Amazon, which already has a major commercial relationship with Rivian. TechCrunch reported in October 2025 that Rivian had supplied Amazon with more than 25,000 electric delivery vans by that point. That is a dated figure from the report, not a current fleet count. The TM-Q deal extends the relationship into a smaller class of urban vehicle rather than changing the identity of the van program.

Why Amazon may want a cargo quad for city routes
A van is useful for large loads and dispersed stops, but it can be a poor fit for short routes with many deliveries in congested, space-constrained neighborhoods. A smaller vehicle could make parking and maneuvering easier, carry more than a typical bicycle, and potentially reach some routes using cycling infrastructure where local rules permit. Electric assistance can avoid tailpipe emissions while the vehicle is operating, though total environmental impact also depends on manufacturing, electricity, batteries, and whether trips actually replace van mileage.

That dated company-reported count suggests existing infrastructure the TM-Q might complement; it does not show where the new vehicles will go or how a specific delivery route will work.
A plausible operating model is to use vans for larger or geographically spread routes and cargo quads for dense, short urban routes, with hubs serving as transfer or charging points. That is an operational interpretation, not a workflow confirmed by Amazon or Also. The announcement supports a specialized urban layer, not a plan to replace Amazon’s van fleet.

How the TM-Q differs from Rivian’s delivery van
| Feature | Also TM-Q | Rivian EDV |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle type | Four-wheeled, pedal-assist electric quadricycle | Battery-electric delivery van |
| Intended setting | Dense urban routes; access to bike lanes depends on local law | Conventional roads and broader delivery areas |
| Capacity detail in cited reporting | More than 400 pounds of packages, as reported by TechCrunch in October 2025; not an independent test | Comparable cargo-capacity figure not stated in the cited report |
| Propulsion | Rider pedals with electric assistance | Electric motor; conventional motor-vehicle operation |
| Likely role | Short, dense routes with relatively modest loads | General package delivery and larger or less concentrated routes |
The vehicles serve different delivery needs. A cargo quad’s smaller footprint may help in a dense neighborhood, but its reported payload is not a substitute for a van’s larger cargo space or wider operating range. The evidence supports complementing vans, not replacing them.
What technology the TM-Q shares with Also’s e-bike
TechCrunch reported that the TM-Q shares significant underlying technology with Also’s TM-B e-bike, including a pedal-by-wire drivetrain, battery technology, similar handlebars, a built-in display and control screen, app connectivity, software updates, and security features.
In a pedal-by-wire system, sensors detect the rider’s pedaling and electronics translate that input into motor assistance. It is a way of controlling propulsion, not autonomous driving. Also’s TM-B product page describes its software-defined drive system, modular frame, over-the-air updates, navigation, touchscreen, and a manufacturer-claimed range of up to 100 miles for the higher-performance version. Those TM-B features and range are not TM-Q specifications; the two products should not be treated as interchangeable.

Specifications and operating details still missing
The public descriptions establish the TM-Q’s four-wheel layout, pedal-assisted propulsion, commercial and personal uses, and intended fleet customization. The reported package capacity is more than 400 pounds, but the reviewed sources do not provide enough technical data to evaluate a delivery shift or compare it precisely with other vehicles.
- Price, order value, and exact number of vehicles
- Curb weight, dimensions, motor power, battery capacity, and top speed
- Charging time, verified range under delivery loads, and maintenance intervals
- Braking and stability performance, including with a heavy load
- Weather protection and rider comfort over a full shift
- Final commercial configuration, service network, production milestones, and actual delivery progress
- Operating model, including who will ride the vehicles and in which cities
Also describes a removable-battery architecture, and reporting says the company is working toward battery-swapping or battery-dock systems. The reviewed information does not establish a complete Amazon charging or swapping setup, its scale, or its uptime in routine operations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bike-lane access depends on local rules
Physical ability to fit in a bike lane is not the same as legal permission to use one. Also says bike-lane use is subject to state and local laws and regulations on its TM-Q page. Rules may turn on how a jurisdiction classifies the vehicle, as well as its width, weight, speed, and commercial use. A four-wheeled vehicle carrying hundreds of pounds may not qualify for every lane available to a bicycle, and access could differ between cities or countries.

Even where use is lawful, practical fit matters. A vehicle that occupies more space or moves differently from ordinary bicycles can affect passing, pedestrian interactions, and safety on narrow or crowded cycling routes. The announcement does not establish a blanket bike-lane exemption or nationwide eligibility.
What will determine whether the strategy works
The agreement is a test of whether a compact commercial vehicle can operate reliably within a delivery network built around vans and other methods. Several conditions will shape its usefulness:
- Route density and payload: The case is strongest where many stops fall within a small area and loads fit the vehicle’s capacity. Sparse routes or bulky orders favor other vehicles.
- Local access: The efficiency case weakens if regulations prevent useful access to bike lanes or other restricted routes.
- Rider workload and safety: Pedal assistance alone does not establish how much effort riders supply, how the vehicle handles a heavy load, or whether repeated mounting and dismounting is practical over a shift.
- Charging and uptime: A commercial fleet needs charging or swapping procedures, spare batteries, depot space, maintenance, and a way to recover a vehicle that fails mid-route.
- Weather and security: Rain, temperature extremes, package protection, theft, and vandalism can affect whether a small open or semi-open vehicle is workable in a particular city.
- Fleet integration and scale: Routing, tracking, security, service support, parts availability, and dependable manufacturing all matter if an order for thousands is to become a supported fleet.
- Total operating cost: Potential savings in fuel, parking, or congestion must be weighed against specialized maintenance, charging, labor, and infrastructure needs. No fleet cost comparison is established in the announcement.
What the announcement means for Amazon and Also
For Amazon, the deal signals interest in adding a smaller vehicle to its urban delivery mix while retaining vans for routes and loads that call for them. For Also, a multi-year order from a major commercial customer could put its shared vehicle, battery, and software platform into fleet use at a scale beyond personal e-bike sales. Whether that potential becomes a functioning fleet depends on manufacturing, service, regulation, rider safety, and route economics—not the order announcement alone.
