The same announcement expanded Microsoft 365 Copilot to organizations of all sizes, removed the former 300-seat minimum, and listed a $30-per-user monthly launch price for eligible small businesses.
Those launch details remain important, but they are not the whole 2026 buying picture. Microsoft’s current consumer storefront presents its premium AI-inclusive bundle as Microsoft 365 Premium, while Microsoft 365 Copilot remains a separately licensed business service. The right choice depends on whether you need personal Office assistance or Copilot grounded in company data.
What Microsoft announced on January 15, 2024
Microsoft announced three related changes, not one universal Copilot product:
- Copilot Pro: a premium subscription for individual users.
- Copilot in consumer Microsoft 365: Copilot features inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote for eligible Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers who also had Copilot Pro at launch.
- Copilot for Microsoft 365: a commercial add-on designed to use organizational context through Microsoft Graph.
Microsoft also opened commercial eligibility to businesses of all sizes, removed the previous 300-seat requirement, and made Office 365 E3 and E5 customers eligible. The announcement listed $20 per individual per month for Copilot Pro and $30 per person per month for eligible small-business customers. These are launch-era prices, not a guarantee of current pricing. Microsoft’s January 2024 announcement contains the original terms.

What Copilot Pro included at launch
| Feature | Launch detail |
|---|---|
| Audience | Individual consumers |
| Price | $20 per user per month |
| Microsoft 365 apps | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote for eligible Personal and Family subscribers |
| Model access | Priority access beginning with OpenAI GPT-4 Turbo, plus faster performance during busy periods |
| Image creation | Enhanced Designer image creation, including 100 boosts per day at launch |
| Customization | Copilot GPT Builder announced as “coming soon” |
| Teams and company data | Not part of the consumer Copilot Pro experience |
Microsoft described one Copilot experience across the web, PC, apps and, eventually, phones. Model names, image allowances, interface labels and feature availability can change, so the table should be read as a record of the 2024 announcement rather than a permanent specification.
What “Copilot on Microsoft 365” meant
The phrase meant that Copilot could work inside Microsoft 365 applications instead of existing only as a separate web chatbot. Microsoft cited these consumer scenarios:
- Word: drafting and rewriting.
- Excel: analyzing data and suggesting formulas or insights.
- PowerPoint: creating and refining presentations.
- Outlook: helping with email and inbox work.
- OneNote: planning and organizing notes.
For organizations, Microsoft also described Copilot in Teams for meeting summaries and work conversations. Licensed business Copilot can use emails, meetings, chats, documents and other Microsoft 365 information that the signed-in user is already permitted to access. It does not grant permission to data the user could not otherwise open; tenant configuration and existing permission hygiene still matter.

Copilot Pro versus Microsoft 365 Copilot
| Copilot Pro / consumer Microsoft 365 AI | Microsoft 365 Copilot | |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Personal Microsoft account | Work or school account in an organization |
| Primary data | Personal prompts and files connected to consumer apps and OneDrive | Permissioned organizational data through Microsoft Graph |
| Apps | Consumer Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote features, subject to plan and rollout | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams and other supported Microsoft 365 services |
| Administration | Consumer account controls | Tenant administration, licensing, security and compliance controls |
| License model | Consumer subscription or plan entitlement | Eligible base subscription plus a Copilot add-on assigned to users |
| Best fit | Personal productivity and documents | Workflows involving company files, meetings, mail and collaboration |
A consumer subscription is therefore not a replacement for organizational Copilot. The products have different identities, data boundaries and administration models.

Microsoft now presents Microsoft 365 Premium
Microsoft’s current U.S. consumer purchase page uses the name Microsoft 365 Premium. The former Copilot Pro retail path redirects to that product presentation. The page displayed $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year in the United States when accessed August 16–18, 2026. It lists Microsoft 365 apps, Copilot, extensive AI usage, advanced Copilot features, security tools and up to 6 TB of storage. Prices and benefits can vary by country and change over time. View Microsoft 365 Premium or the current Copilot Pro destination.
This does not establish that Microsoft formally discontinued the Copilot Pro name in every market. It does establish that Microsoft’s current consumer buying path is centered on Microsoft 365 Premium rather than a clearly separate Copilot Pro storefront listing.

AI benefits are owner-only on shared plans
Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Personal, Family and Premium plans can include Copilot-related features, but AI benefits are generally limited to the subscription owner. A Family or Premium plan can support up to six people for apps and storage without giving every shared member their own AI entitlement. Check Microsoft’s Copilot subscription FAQ for current age, language, region, platform and usage restrictions.
The app was renamed later
Beginning January 15, 2025, Microsoft began moving the former Microsoft 365 or Office app to the Microsoft 365 Copilot app across web, mobile and Windows. Office.com and Microsoft365.com redirect to Microsoft’s newer m365.cloud.microsoft address. This was a later app-surface change, not part of the January 2024 Copilot Pro launch. Microsoft’s transition guidance explains the rename.

What businesses receive and what they must license
Microsoft 365 Copilot remains an organizational add-on. Current Microsoft documentation lists Microsoft 365 Copilot Business prerequisites of Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Business Standard, Business Premium or Microsoft 365 Apps for Business. Broader eligibility includes Microsoft 365 E3, E5, E7, F1 and F3; Office 365 E1, E3, E5 and F3; Teams plans; and certain Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, Planner, Project, Visio, government and education plans.

Administrators must compare the tenant’s exact base plan and cloud environment with Microsoft’s current licensing matrix, then assign the add-on to users. The service description details supported services and differences among commercial, government and education environments.
Copilot Chat is not the same as licensed work Copilot
Microsoft says web-based Copilot Chat is included at no additional cost with eligible organizational Microsoft 365 subscriptions. That does not mean every user receives the full, work-grounded Copilot experience. Work-based chat and deeper in-app assistance require the applicable Microsoft 365 Copilot license, supported plan and rollout. Always identify whether a claim refers to free web chat, Copilot inside an app, or Graph-grounded organizational Copilot.

Choose a consumer Microsoft 365 AI plan when
- You already rely on desktop Office apps and want assistance inside your documents, spreadsheets or presentations.
- You value OneDrive storage, Defender and ongoing Microsoft 365 updates.
- You are the subscription owner and do not expect AI access for every Family or Premium member.
Compare current Personal, Family and Premium entitlements on Microsoft’s consumer plans page before buying.
Choose Microsoft 365 Copilot for work when
- You need work-account authentication and Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive or Outlook workflows.
- You want responses grounded in organizational data the user is authorized to access.
- Your organization needs tenant administration, governance and security controls.
Do not choose it solely because the business has Microsoft 365: an eligible base plan and assigned add-on are still required.
Common problems and fixes
“I pay for Microsoft 365 but cannot see Copilot”
- Sign in to the apps with the account that owns the subscription.
- Confirm the consumer plan is Personal, Family or Premium, or confirm that an administrator assigned the business license.
- Update Microsoft 365, restart the apps and check availability for your country, language, device and app version.
- If it is a Family or Premium plan, verify that you are the subscription owner rather than a shared member.
“Copilot in Excel does not work”
Microsoft’s support guidance says AutoSave must be enabled and the workbook must be saved to OneDrive. Copilot does not work with an entirely unsaved local file. See the support FAQ.
“My business cannot assign Copilot”
The tenant may lack an eligible prerequisite plan, or the user may not have an assigned add-on. Compare the tenant with Microsoft’s licensing options and use the Microsoft 365 admin center to assign licenses.
Availability differs by environment
Features vary by country, language, operating system, app version, subscription, rollout and cloud environment. Commercial, GCC, GCC-High and DoD tenants can have different feature sets, as documented in Microsoft’s service description.
Bottom line
The January 2024 announcement moved Copilot from a standalone assistant toward an integrated Microsoft 365 layer: Copilot Pro targeted individuals, while Microsoft 365 Copilot targeted organizations and their permissioned work data. In 2026, consumers should evaluate the current Microsoft 365 Premium, Personal and Family entitlements rather than assume the old Copilot Pro listing still defines the product. Businesses should treat Microsoft 365 Copilot as a separately licensed, administrated service—not as an automatic benefit of every Microsoft 365 subscription.
