Yes—but the important price cut happened at launch, not as a new 2026 promotion. Apple introduced the 13-inch M4 MacBook Air on March 5, 2025, at $999, down $100 from the previous 13-inch Air’s $1,099 starting price. That was an official list-price change. Later $799 and $899 listings were temporary retailer discounts on particular configurations, not additional permanent Apple price cuts.
What Apple actually cut
The headline applied to the entry-level, 13-inch M4 MacBook Air sold in the United States. Its launch configuration was generally identified as 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD. Apple’s announcement described $999 as a new lower starting price, compared with the prior $1,099 entry point. The announcement also introduced the M4 chip and Sky Blue finish. See the March 5, 2025 announcement.
| Comparison | Price | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Previous 13-inch MacBook Air starting price | $1,099 | Baseline |
| 13-inch M4 MacBook Air launch price | $999 | $100 lower, about 9.1% |
That does not mean every M4 Air configuration cost $999. Screen size, memory and SSD capacity all change the price. A 15-inch model or a machine with 24GB of memory should never be compared with the base 13-inch price without listing its full specifications.
Timeline: launch cut, retailer sales and the M5 generation
March 2025: Apple’s official reduction
Apple launched the M4 Air at $999 for the base 13-inch model. This was a product-positioning decision, not a coupon or clearance event.

After launch: temporary retailer markdowns
Retailers later discounted remaining M4 inventory. Historical reports included a B&H price of $899 in June 2026 and earlier Best Buy promotions as low as $799 for a 13-inch model and $999 for a 15-inch model. Those figures came from limited-time offers and should not be treated as today’s prices. Conditions such as membership, coupons, open-box status, seller, memory and storage can change the comparison. See the B&H deal report and Best Buy deal report.
March 2026: M5 MacBook Air arrives
Apple’s M5 announcement listed the 13-inch model at $1,099 and the 15-inch model at $1,299. Both started with 512GB of storage, twice the M4 base SSD. The M5 launch therefore raised the headline price by $100 versus the M4 launch price while also providing more storage. Apple’s announcement is at Apple Newsroom.
M4 versus M5: compare the complete configuration
| Model | Screen | Base memory | Base storage | Launch price | What the price means |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air M4 | 13-inch | 16GB | 256GB | $999 | Official March 2025 starting price |
| MacBook Air M5 | 13-inch | Not stated in the cited launch material | 512GB | $1,099 | Official March 2026 starting price |
| MacBook Air M5 | 15-inch | Not stated in the cited launch material | 512GB | $1,299 | Official March 2026 starting price |
A $999 M4 is not automatically a better deal than a $1,099 M5. If you need more than 256GB for photos, video, games, development tools or virtual machines, the M4 may require external or cloud storage. Conversely, buyers who already use external storage and want the lowest price may value the $100 saving more than the extra SSD.
Apple says the M5 adds Wi‑Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 through its N1 connectivity chip and claims up to 1.5× faster Blender ray-tracing performance than the M4 Air. That performance figure is Apple’s own test claim, not independent testing.

How to judge an M4 deal in 2026
Use the following as practical decision rules, not Apple policies:
- Excellent: at least $200 below a comparable M5, with the same memory and acceptable storage.
- Reasonable: $100–$150 below an M5 when 256GB is sufficient and the seller is reliable.
- Weak: within $100 of an M5, particularly when the M5 includes 512GB.
- Poor: refurbished or open-box M4 priced at or above a new M5.
“Comparable” means matching screen size, memory, storage, condition and warranty as closely as possible. A retailer’s “was” price may be an old or inflated reference rather than Apple’s current list price.
New, refurbished, open-box or marketplace?
Sealed new M4
A sealed unit from Apple or a reputable authorized retailer is the simplest bargain. Confirm the exact chip, screen size, memory, SSD, keyboard layout and return deadline before paying.
Apple Certified Refurbished M4
Apple continues to show M4 Air configurations in its refurbished store, but colors, memory, storage and sizes vary. One listing observed in the cited material showed a refurbished 13-inch M4 at $1,269; another showed a 15-inch M4 with 24GB memory and 256GB storage at $1,189. Those are different configurations, not direct substitutes for the $999 base model. Apple’s refurbished listing states a one-year limited warranty and 14-day returns. Check the live inventory at Apple Certified Refurbished and the specific product page at Apple’s 15-inch M4 listing.

Open-box and marketplace listings
Inspect the condition label, seller identity, warranty, return policy and shipping availability. Watch for international keyboards, missing accessories, activation locks, marketplace sellers and product photos that do not match the listed specification. A large discount is not useful if the machine cannot be returned or its condition is unclear.
What current Apple pricing tells you—and what it does not
The M5 announcement says $1,099 for the 13-inch model and $1,299 for the 15-inch model. A separate Apple Mac shopping page has displayed MacBook Air from $1,299, which may reflect a later price change, a different base configuration or dynamic regional presentation. Do not assume either figure is the checkout price without checking the live U.S. buying page on the day you order: Apple’s Mac store. The same caution applies to any retailer deal.

Choose a discounted M4 when price is the priority
Buy the M4 when it is genuinely below the M5, the unit is new or reliably refurbished, and 16GB memory with 256GB storage fits your workload. A discount of $150–$200 or more can make the older chip worthwhile for schoolwork, office applications, browsing and ordinary creative tasks.
Choose the M5 when the gap is small or storage matters
The M5 is the safer long-term choice when the price difference is modest, you expect several years of ownership, or 512GB is important. Newer connectivity and Apple’s claimed graphics improvement also favor the M5 for demanding workloads, although independent performance results may differ.

Choose a refurbished M4 for a better-equipped configuration
A refurbished M4 can make sense when 24GB memory, a 15-inch display or another upgrade costs less than an equivalent new M5. Reject the deal if its price approaches a new M5 while retaining only 256GB storage.
Consider the MacBook Neo only for the lowest-cost Mac
Apple positions MacBook Neo below MacBook Air. It may satisfy buyers who need the cheapest new Mac, but it is not automatically an Air substitute. Compare its display, ports, memory, storage, battery and chip before choosing it. Apple lists it separately at the MacBook Neo store and discusses the lineup at Apple Newsroom.
Five checks before buying an M4 listing
- Record the exact screen size, chip, memory and SSD capacity.
- Compare the total price with a same-size M5, including the M5’s 512GB base storage.
- Confirm new, refurbished or open-box condition and identify the actual seller.
- Read the warranty, return window, coupon and membership requirements.
- Check current U.S. availability and shipping rather than relying on an expired deal article.

The Bottom Line
The M4 MacBook Air’s $100 reduction was real: Apple launched the 13-inch, 16GB/256GB model at $999 on March 5, 2025, instead of $1,099. In 2026, buy an M4 only when the actual configuration and condition put it meaningfully below an M5—ideally by $150–$200 or more. Otherwise, the M5’s newer platform and 512GB starting storage usually justify paying the difference.
