An unoccupied Zoox robotaxi collided with a passenger car in Las Vegas on April 8, 2025, after its automated-driving system made an inaccurate prediction about the car’s movement. No injuries were reported and both vehicles sustained minor damage. Zoox paused driverless operations, corrected the software, and filed a voluntary National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall covering 270 vehicles or automated-driving-system units.
The recall concerned software released before April 17, 2025—not a mechanical defect—and the affected public-road vehicles had received the update before Zoox publicly announced the recall on May 6.
What happened in the Las Vegas collision?
The Zoox vehicle was unoccupied and operating autonomously. A passenger car approached from a commercial driveway or another perpendicular direction. Zoox said its system predicted that the car would continue moving. The robotaxi slowed and steered right, but the passenger car stopped and yielded in the shoulder area. The robotaxi then braked hard but still made contact.
- No injuries were reported.
- Both vehicles sustained minor damage.
- The available accounts do not establish a legal finding of fault. Zoox identified an inaccurate automated-driving prediction as the safety defect described in its filing.
That sequence matters: the other car’s actual behavior was to stop and yield. The issue described by Zoox and NHTSA was the robotaxi’s incorrect prediction of what the car would do, not evidence that the system failed to detect the vehicle at all.

What software did Zoox recall?
Zoox filed a voluntary Part 573 safety recall for automated-driving-system software. The key details were:
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| NHTSA campaign | 25E-029 |
| Zoox recall number | 25-02 |
| Affected population | 270 vehicles or ADS-equipped units |
| Affected software | ADS versions released before April 17, 2025 |
| Remedy | Updated ADS software, provided at no charge |
| Completion status | NHTSA later listed all 270 as remedied, with zero unreachable and zero removed |
NHTSA’s recall report describes a condition in which another vehicle approached slowly from a perpendicular direction and stopped. In some circumstances above 40 mph, the Zoox system might not have enough time or available path options to avoid a collision.
The 270 figure is the population equipped with the relevant software, not necessarily Zoox’s entire fleet. Because Zoox owns and operates its robotaxis, the remedy could be deployed across its fleet rather than handled through appointments for individual private owners. A formal recall can still be required even when a fleet operator has already installed the corrective software.

What exactly was the software defect?
The documented failure was a behavior-prediction problem. The ADS made an “inaccurately confident” prediction about a slowly approaching vehicle that had come from the side and then stopped. At speeds above 40 mph, that mistaken prediction could leave too little time or road space for avoidance.
This is different from saying the robotaxi could not see the car. The primary recall documents support a claim about prediction and collision avoidance; they do not establish a sensor-detection failure.
Did Zoox stop operating?
Zoox paused driverless operations across its geofenced operating areas after the crash while it conducted an internal review. The response was staged rather than a permanent shutdown:

- Driverless service was paused across the operating areas.
- Zoox resumed in geofences with maximum speeds below 40 mph on April 10, 2025, while excluding Las Vegas routes above that threshold during the investigation.
- The company analyzed the incident, used simulation, and developed, tested, and validated a software update.
- The update was deployed across affected vehicles operating on public roads on April 16–17, and operations resumed across the geofences.
- Zoox filed the voluntary recall, documenting the defect and remedy with NHTSA.
Zoox’s own account of the event and response is available at Zoox’s April 2025 safety-recall report. The recall announcement followed the April 8 crash on May 6; it was not an immediate same-day filing.
Was the robotaxi carrying passengers?
No. The vehicle involved in the Las Vegas collision was unoccupied. It was operating autonomously, but there were no robotaxi passengers inside. The incident therefore involved risk to other road users and property rather than passenger injuries in the Zoox vehicle.
How serious was the incident?
The immediate outcome was limited: no reported injuries and minor damage. The underlying safety significance was greater because the problem involved a repeatable class of traffic interaction and was serious enough for Zoox to pause driverless operations, investigate, correct the software, and file a formal federal recall.
It is therefore inaccurate to call the event either a harmless fender-bender or proof that all Zoox autonomous-driving technology was unsafe. The evidence identifies a specific software condition affecting a defined population.

How does this recall differ from Zoox’s other 2025 incidents?
March: hard-braking recall involving test vehicles
In March 2025, Zoox filed a separate voluntary software recall involving previous software associated with two incidents in which retrofitted Toyota Highlander test vehicles were rear-ended by motorcycles after braking. Those vehicles had safety drivers, and Zoox said the software was no longer in use. See Zoox’s March safety-recall report.
This was a different vehicle configuration and a different incident pattern from the unoccupied purpose-built robotaxi in Las Vegas.
May: San Francisco e-scooter collision
On May 8, 2025, an unoccupied Zoox robotaxi in San Francisco braked at an intersection to yield and was struck by an e-scooter rider. Zoox said the rider suffered minor injuries, declined medical attention, and that the vehicle was operating as expected when struck. The company nevertheless filed another voluntary software recall to improve perception tracking and reduce the chance of vehicle movement when a vulnerable road user is very close. That event and recall are described in Zoox’s May 2025 safety-recall report.
The San Francisco event should not be merged with the Las Vegas collision: the dates, locations, road users, circumstances, and software concerns were different.

Did the recall cancel Zoox’s Las Vegas plans?
No. Contemporary reporting said Zoox still planned to begin commercial service in Las Vegas later in 2025. Zoox subsequently announced the public Las Vegas launch on September 10, 2025, in its Las Vegas service announcement.
The launch shows that the recall did not permanently cancel the program. It does not show that the defect was harmless or that autonomous-driving risks had been eliminated. Later expansion and testing likewise are not proof that every possible failure mode has been solved.
What the recall says about autonomous-vehicle reliability
The episode illustrates how autonomous-vehicle safety is managed when a real-world interaction exposes a gap in prediction. A minor crash can still trigger a broad operational response if engineers identify a scenario that could recur at higher speeds. Conversely, correcting one defined condition does not establish that a system is risk-free in every traffic situation.
NHTSA’s completion data support a narrow conclusion: all 270 units in this recall population were recorded as remedied. They do not support a broader claim about the safety of every Zoox vehicle, every software version, or autonomous driving generally.

The Bottom Line
The April 8, 2025 Las Vegas crash had minor immediate consequences but exposed a meaningful prediction failure in Zoox software. Zoox paused driverless operations, deployed a correction, and filed NHTSA recall 25E-029 for 270 affected units—even though the public-road vehicles had already received the update before the May 6 announcement.
