Last checked: August 18, 2026. Verizon’s biggest iPhone discounts usually arrive as 36 monthly bill credits—not instant cash. The best offer depends on whether you are switching, adding a line, upgrading an existing line, trading in a phone, and willing to keep an eligible plan for three years.
For most switchers and new lines, start with Verizon’s current iPhone 17-family trade-in offers. For the lowest-cost current model, price the iPhone 17e. If you may leave Verizon within two years or refuse a plan change, compare the total against buying from Apple.
Quick comparison: which Verizon route fits you?
| Buyer situation | Likely best route | Main catch |
|---|---|---|
| Switching to Verizon | New-line iPhone 17-family offer with a qualifying trade-in | Port-in or new-line rules and 36 months of credits |
| Existing customer upgrading | Account-specific upgrade or loyalty offer | May require a particular plan, trade-in or 60 days of device activity |
| Adding a line | New-line free-phone promotion | The service cost can exceed the phone savings |
| No trade-in | New-line offer that explicitly waives the trade-in | Usually limited to selected models and plans |
| Wants a Pro model | Premium-plan trade-in promotion | A higher plan can erase the larger credit |
| Lowest total cost | iPhone 17e, an older model, or an unlocked Apple purchase | Smaller headline discount or more upfront cost |
| May leave Verizon soon | Buy directly from Apple | You give up some carrier promotional value |

The strongest Verizon offers currently available
iPhone 17 family: best for switchers and many new lines
Verizon says new and existing customers may receive up to $1,100 off an iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max with an eligible trade-in and qualifying unlimited plan. The maximum depends on the exact model, trade-in, plan and account eligibility; it is not a $1,100 cash payment. Check Verizon’s announcement and checkout terms at Verizon’s iPhone 17 offer page.

A separate Verizon example lists the 256GB iPhone 17 at $829.99, with credits spread over 36 months when a new smartphone line and eligible plan are selected: offer terms. Treat this as an example, not a guaranteed price for every account.
iPhone 17e: the lower-cost current model
Verizon’s free-phone page lists the iPhone 17e at a $599.99 retail price and approximately $16.66 per month for 36 months before promotional credits. It can be the sensible choice when you want a current iPhone without paying for Pro hardware, but the required service plan still determines your real cost.
iPhone 16 and older inventory
Outgoing-generation phones can become better values after a new launch. Verizon has shown a four-line iPhone 16 example at $729.99 per 128GB phone, offset by $730 in credits over 36 months when new smartphone lines and required plans are used: promotion terms. Do not assume that a multi-line example applies to a single line.
Account-specific loyalty offers
Existing customers sometimes see upgrade credits after signing in that are not shown publicly. Community reports describe such offers, but they are anecdotal and cannot be treated as guaranteed: reported examples. Compare the signed-in offer with your current plan before changing anything.

What “free iPhone” means at Verizon
In a typical promotion, Verizon finances the phone at 0% APR for 36 months and applies a matching promotional credit to each bill. The phone is “free” only after all credits post and only while eligibility continues.
- You keep the qualifying line active.
- You remain on the eligible unlimited plan.
- You satisfy Auto Pay, paper-free billing, port-in, trade-in and other listed conditions.
- You pay sales tax on the full retail price where applicable, plus activation or upgrade fees.
- You continue paying the line’s service charges and any accessories or protection you choose.
Verizon says credits may stop when requirements are no longer met. Read the current rules at Verizon’s device-deal FAQ.
New line versus upgrade: the cost-changing distinction
New line
New-line promotions can be the most generous because Verizon is adding paid service. Some require porting a number from another carrier; others simply require a new smartphone line. A free handset is not a bargain if you did not need the line.
Existing-line upgrade
Upgrade offers may provide smaller credits, restrict eligible plans or require a qualifying trade-in. Verizon says some existing-customer promotions require the traded-in phone to have been active on a Verizon mobile account for 60 consecutive days. Confirm that requirement before sending a device.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Trade-in checklist
Before accepting a quoted value, verify:
- Exact model and storage capacity.
- Whether the offer requires acceptable cosmetic and working condition or explicitly allows any condition.
- Power, display, buttons, cameras and battery requirements.
- That Activation Lock and Find My iPhone are disabled.
- Whether the device must have been active on your Verizon account.
- The shipment deadline and when credits begin.
- Whether the value is an ordinary trade-in amount or a 36-month promotional amount.
Verizon can inspect a submitted phone and reduce or reject its value if it does not meet the offer’s requirements. A surrendered device generally cannot be recovered after acceptance.
Name the plan before calling a phone free
Record the exact plan, price, billing requirements and term beside every offer. One Verizon example requires Unlimited Ultimate, advertised from $90 per month with Auto Pay, plus taxes and fees, for 36 months; recheck the live terms at checkout: Verizon’s promotion information. Verizon also advertises Unlimited Welcome as low as $30 per line per month for four lines with Auto Pay, plus taxes and fees—an account-level example, not a one-line price.
Calculate the real 36-month cost
Use this formula before comparing deals:
Total Verizon cost = 36 months of required service + phone taxes and fees + activation or upgrade fee + down payment + accessories − promotional credits − valid trade-in value.
For an unlocked purchase, calculate: Apple purchase price + optional AppleCare + independent wireless service − Apple Trade In credit.

Example: a “free” phone on a new line
The handset payment may be $16.66 per month and the credit may also be $16.66, producing a $0 device charge. You still owe 36 months of service, taxes, fees and any required plan premium. If the new line costs $90 monthly, service alone is $3,240 before taxes and fees.
Example: up to $1,100 on a Pro
A $1,100 maximum credit normally means about $30.56 per month for 36 months, not $1,100 paid immediately. Leaving after 12 months could mean receiving roughly one-third of the scheduled credits while remaining device payments become your responsibility; the exact payoff depends on the agreement.
Example: keeping a cheaper legacy plan
Suppose an upgrade on your existing plan gives $600 in credits, while moving to a required premium plan gives $1,100. The extra $500 is outweighed if the premium plan costs more than about $13.89 per month for 36 months, before taxes. Compare the plan difference—not just the credit headline.
What happens if you leave early?
- Cancelling or porting out the line usually ends future credits.
- Remaining device payments may become due.
- Changing to an ineligible plan can reduce or stop credits.
- Paying off the phone early may forfeit unused credits.
- Upgrading before month 36 may require paying off or surrendering the current device, depending on the program.
- Verizon generally cannot return a trade-in after it has been accepted.
Verizon versus buying from Apple
Apple’s direct route is usually preferable when flexibility matters more than the lowest upfront payment. Apple lists carrier-connected pricing, trade-in values and financing on its product pages. For example, Apple’s iPhone 17 Verizon checkout shows a $30 connectivity discount: iPhone 17 pricing. Its iPhone 16 Verizon-connected page shows $699 pricing and Apple Trade In values from $35 to $695 depending on the submitted device: iPhone 16 pricing.

- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
Buying from Apple can preserve carrier flexibility and direct Apple support, while Verizon can minimize upfront device cost. Apple’s carrier-connected price is not automatically equivalent to Verizon’s 36-month promotional credit, so compare both the phone and the wireless plan.
How to judge holiday and future launch offers
Verizon’s past Holiday Deal Days promotion included an iPhone 16 Pro, Apple Watch and iPad incentives with a stated $1,000 promotional credit over 36 months. That is historical context, not an August 2026 offer. See the archived announcement at Verizon Holiday Deal Days.
Holiday sales can improve bundle value, while iPhone launch season can produce aggressive trade-in credits on the outgoing generation. Waiting is worthwhile only if the expected extra discount exceeds the cost of delaying your purchase or accepting a more expensive plan.
Checkout checklist
- Write down the exact iPhone model and storage.
- Confirm whether the offer is for a new line, port-in or upgrade.
- Record the required plan, Auto Pay and paperless-billing rules.
- Check trade-in model, condition, Activation Lock and submission deadline.
- Verify the 36-month device payment, monthly credit and credit start date.
- Add sales tax, activation or upgrade fees and any down payment.
- Ask what happens to your old device balance.
- Read the early-cancellation, plan-change and early-upgrade language.
- Save the final offer confirmation and tracking information.
The Bottom Line
The best Verizon iPhone deal is the one with the lowest 36-month cost for your situation. Choose the iPhone 17-family trade-in offer if you are switching or adding a genuinely needed line; check a signed-in loyalty offer if you are upgrading; choose the 17e or an outgoing model for value; and buy from Apple when leaving Verizon or keeping plan flexibility matters more than bill credits.
