1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsiOS 26 adds a dedicated AutoFill section to Apple Wallet. You can save a physical or virtual card there and use Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode to enter its card number, expiration date, and security code in compatible apps and websites—even when Apple Pay is not offered.
This is an expansion of card AutoFill, not a replacement for Apple Pay. Apple Pay is a tokenized checkout option; Wallet AutoFill supplies card details to a conventional payment form.
What iOS 26 changed
Earlier card AutoFill was most associated with Safari. In iOS 26, Wallet provides a central place to manage saved payment cards and makes them available to compatible payment fields in apps and websites. The form still has to expose recognizable card fields, so “systemwide” does not mean every checkout will show the same control.
Apple documents the feature for iOS 26 or later. See Apple’s iPhone User Guide for the current interface.

Apple Pay versus Wallet AutoFill
| Capability | Apple Pay | Wallet AutoFill |
|---|---|---|
| Main use | A checkout that displays an Apple Pay option | A traditional card-number payment form |
| Card eligibility | Requires a participating issuer, card and region | A card can be saved even if it cannot be added to Apple Pay |
| What the merchant receives | Apple Pay payment credentials, including a device account number and transaction-specific security information | The card information inserted into the ordinary form |
| Authentication | Face ID, Touch ID or passcode | Face ID, Touch ID or passcode when the saved card is accessed |
| Best choice | When the merchant supports Apple Pay and you want its tokenized flow | When Apple Pay is absent, unavailable or the card is Apple Pay-ineligible |
Apple describes Apple Pay’s payment flow and requirements at Apple Support and its security model at this iPhone guide. AutoFill should be treated like entering card details into the merchant’s form, even though Wallet protects access to the saved information.
How to add a card to Wallet AutoFill
- Open Wallet.
- Tap More (the three-dot button in the upper-right corner).
- Tap AutoFill and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
- Tap Add Card.
- Scan the card with the iPhone camera, or choose manual entry and type the details.
- Review the information and save it.
A debit or credit card does not need Apple Pay support to be saved for AutoFill. Physical and virtual card numbers can be stored when you have the information and the card’s issuer permits their use. Apple Pay eligibility itself still varies by issuer, card, country or region and device.
If you are looking for a setting rather than the management screen, Apple lists Settings → Wallet & Apple Pay → AutoFill Cards. Card management is performed in Wallet. The setting is described at Apple Support.

How to use AutoFill at checkout
- Open the app or website and proceed to its card-payment form.
- Tap directly in a payment-information field.
- Choose a saved card shown above the onscreen keyboard.
- Authenticate if prompted.
- Check the completed card number, expiration date and security code, then submit the order.
For a card that is not saved, some checkouts offer Scan Card; position the card in the camera frame and review the result. Depending on the app, website, keyboard and iOS point release, the control may instead appear in a contextual menu as AutoFill → Credit Card. The wording and placement can vary.

Which cards can you save?
- A credit or debit card that supports Apple Pay can be available for both Apple Pay and AutoFill.
- A card that does not support Apple Pay can still be saved for AutoFill.
- Physical and virtual card numbers may be stored, depending on the card and the details you enter.
That broader storage option does not mean every issuer, prepaid product or corporate card behaves identically. Apple says issuer and regional support determine Apple Pay availability; see its availability guidance.

Editing or removing a saved card
Go to Wallet → More → AutoFill, authenticate, select the card and tap Edit to correct its information. To delete the saved form details, choose Remove From AutoFill. Removing a card from AutoFill does not remove that card from Apple Pay.
AutoFill cards are saved in iCloud Keychain and may be available on other devices signed in to the same Apple Account, subject to iCloud Keychain and device settings. Availability is therefore not limited to one iPhone.
When AutoFill is the better option
- The retailer or app has no Apple Pay button.
- An Apple Pay button is unavailable or fails and you need to complete a normal card form.
- You need to enter a card number in an app or website that accepts cards but not Apple Pay.
- You want to use a card that is not eligible for Apple Pay.
- You keep several cards and want to choose among them without opening a banking app.
When Apple Pay is available, it remains preferable if you want its tokenized merchant flow, device authentication or supported issuer features such as rewards or installments. AutoFill is a convenience for ordinary card forms, not an equivalent payment rail.

Security and privacy limits
Opening saved AutoFill cards requires Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode. Keep the iPhone passcode private, and review every field before submitting an order.
Apple Pay and AutoFill have different merchant-side behavior. Apple Pay uses a device account number and transaction-specific security information instead of normally passing the physical card number in the Apple Pay transaction. AutoFill inserts card details into the merchant’s conventional form. Do not assume AutoFill provides Apple Pay’s tokenization or that a website is trustworthy simply because the card came from Wallet.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If AutoFill does not appear
- Confirm the iPhone is running iOS 26 or later.
- Make sure the card was added under Wallet → More → AutoFill, not only as an Apple Pay card.
- Tap directly inside the card-number, expiration-date or security-code field.
- Look above the keyboard for the saved-card suggestion, and authenticate if requested.
- Check Settings → Wallet & Apple Pay → AutoFill Cards.
- Test Safari and a different app. If it works elsewhere, the original checkout may use custom, embedded or poorly labeled fields.
- Update iOS if the AutoFill menu is missing, then try again.
Apple does not guarantee that every payment page exposes AutoFill. A site can accept cards yet fail to present fields that iOS recognizes.

If a card will not add
For AutoFill-only storage, try manual entry rather than scanning. If the error concerns Apple Pay enrollment, the issuer—not Apple—approves or declines the card. Check that the iPhone has a passcode or biometric authentication, the software is current, two-factor authentication is enabled, and the card and region are supported. For messages such as “Could Not Add Card,” “Invalid Card” or “Card Device Limit,” contact the issuer after following Apple’s troubleshooting steps at Apple Support.
If your iPhone is lost
Use Find My and enable Lost Mode promptly. Treat Apple Pay cards and AutoFill details as separate controls, and contact the card issuer if you suspect exposure. Removing a Wallet card from one device does not necessarily remove it from every device; Apple’s device-removal guidance is available at Apple Support.
The Bottom Line
iOS 26’s Wallet AutoFill is a faster way to complete ordinary card checkouts, including with cards that cannot use Apple Pay. Use Apple Pay when its button is available and you want its tokenized payment flow; use AutoFill when a site or app presents a conventional card form.
