Short answer: Apple is usually the less expensive choice when you compare an unlocked, 256GB mainstream flagship: the iPhone 17 is listed at $829, versus $899.99 for a 256GB Galaxy S26. Samsung can be cheaper at the entry level, however, because it offers a 128GB S26 for $799.99, and its trade-in and carrier promotions are often more aggressive. The right answer changes again for premium phones, foldables, refurbished devices and buyers who switch carriers frequently.
This comparison covers U.S. consumer phones, advertised prices before sales tax, and information checked around August 16, 2026. Samsung figures marked “MSRP” come from an official price file effective March 2026; Samsung says those prices can change without notice. Promotions, stock, taxes and financing terms require confirmation at checkout.
What “cheaper” means in this comparison
A useful comparison separates three prices:
- List price: the unlocked device price before tax.
- Promotion-adjusted price: the amount after an immediate discount or trade-in, without pretending future bill credits are cash today.
- Ownership price: device payments plus plan premiums, taxes, protection, accessories, repairs and financing costs, minus trade-in proceeds and eventual resale value.
Prices should also match storage and product class. A compact flagship, a large “Ultra” phone, a budget model and a foldable are not interchangeable simply because they carry the same brand.

| Mainstream flagship, 256GB | iPhone 17 | $829 | Galaxy S26 | $899.99 (256GB MSRP) | Closest storage-for-storage comparison |

Storage-adjusted pricing: the clearest mainstream result
| Storage | iPhone 17 | Galaxy S26 | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 128GB | Not listed for the iPhone 17 | $799.99 MSRP | Not a like-for-like comparison |
| 256GB | $829 | $899.99 MSRP | iPhone is $70.99 lower before tax |
| 512GB | $1,029 | $1,099.99 MSRP | iPhone is $70.99 lower before tax |
The iPhone 17 prices are listed for connecting with a carrier later on Apple’s product page. Storage is only one part of value: display characteristics, camera hardware, software, biometrics, accessories and ecosystem services can justify different prices. “Price per gigabyte” is therefore a limited comparison, not a complete value score.
Budget models: iPhone 17e versus Galaxy S25 FE
Apple’s iPhone 17e starts at $599. Apple identifies a 6.1-inch display, A19 chip and a simplified camera and feature package. Samsung’s official list puts the Galaxy S25 FE at $649.99 for 128GB and $709.99 for 256GB. The FE is a different generation and product design, so the $50.99 starting-price gap does not establish a universal winner.
Before buying, compare the features that affect your use:
- Display refresh rate and outdoor brightness.
- Number of rear cameras, optical zoom and video tools.
- Wireless-charging support and accessory compatibility.
- Storage at the exact price you can afford.
- Software-support commitments, water resistance and repair options.
- Insurance premiums, deductibles and replacement terms.
Choose the 17e when the lower unlocked price and Apple ecosystem matter most. Consider the FE when a larger selection of Android features, storage tiers or Samsung promotions outweigh the higher MSRP. An independent feature test is more useful than a blanket claim that either budget phone is “better.”

Mainstream flagships: iPhone 17 versus Galaxy S26
Upfront price
At the lowest advertised tier, the phones are effectively tied: $799 for iPhone 17 and $799.99 for a 128GB Galaxy S26. At 256GB, Apple is $70.99 cheaper on listed price. That is the strongest price-only case for iPhone in this lineup.
Performance, battery and cameras
A TechRadar review described the Galaxy S26 and iPhone 17 as closely matched in size, performance, battery life and camera quality. Those are independent observations, not a guarantee for every carrier version or usage pattern. Camera results still depend on zoom range, lighting, moving subjects and video priorities.
Ownership details that change the choice
- Apple’s iOS ecosystem is a strong reason to stay with iPhone if you use a Mac, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods or Apple-specific services.
- Samsung offers Android customization, high-refresh-rate displays, broader multitasking options and more model variety.
- Check repair pricing, protection plans and local service before treating a small price difference as decisive.
- Confirm included cables, charging requirements and accessory costs; the cheapest phone can become less cheap after setup.
- U.S. iPhone 17-series models bought through Apple use eSIM rather than a physical SIM tray. Travelers and smaller-carrier customers should confirm eSIM support before ordering.
Larger and premium phones are different classes
iPhone Air versus Galaxy S26+
The iPhone Air starts at $999, while the Galaxy S26+ is listed at $1,099.99 for 256GB. The Air emphasizes thinness and light weight; the S26+ is a conventional larger flagship. Evaluate battery capacity, camera versatility, display size and durability for your priorities instead of calling the $100 difference a pure discount.
iPhone 17 Pro versus Galaxy S26 Ultra
The iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099. The Galaxy S26 Ultra starts at $1,299.99 for 256GB, a $200 higher listed price. This is not a size-for-size match: Samsung’s Ultra targets buyers who want a very large display, extensive zoom and top-tier hardware, while Apple’s starting Pro price covers a smaller phone. Apple may be the better fit for video workflows, ecosystem continuity or a less imposing handset; Samsung may justify the premium for screen size, zoom flexibility, storage choices and multitasking. Do not infer an iPhone Pro Max price from the Pro starting price; verify that model separately.

Foldables: Samsung has the only current option
Apple has no foldable iPhone, so Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold families win this category by availability rather than a lower normal price. Verify the current model and price on Samsung’s purchase pages or the relevant foldable listing; the cited material does not establish a dependable live foldable price.
A foldable can make sense for compactness (Flip) or multitasking (Fold), but budget for:
- Higher screen and hinge repair risk than a conventional phone.
- Insurance or Samsung Care+ and its deductible.
- Uncertain resale value and potentially expensive replacement parts.
- A protective case that may be more important than on a conventional handset.
A carrier’s “free” foldable promotion does not prove foldables are normally cheaper than iPhones; it usually represents bill credits tied to a plan and trade-in.
Why a “free phone” is rarely a $0 purchase
Carrier promotions generally work like this:
- You finance the phone over the carrier’s installment term.
- The carrier applies monthly bill credits.
- You keep an eligible plan and usually the same line for the required period.
- You submit an eligible trade-in in the specified condition.
- You may pay sales tax on the phone’s full retail price at purchase.
Canceling, downgrading, switching carriers or paying off early can stop unpaid credits. A new line or more expensive unlimited plan can cost more than the phone discount. Apple says listed carrier offers can provide up to $830–$1,100 in credits after trade-in, and that a carrier-financed iPhone may remain locked until paid in full; see its buying overview.

August 2026 deal coverage reported Samsung trade-in discounts of up to $400 on S26, $450 on S26+ and $720 on S26 Ultra, plus heavily discounted or free Galaxy models from carriers for qualifying customers. Apple and carriers also advertised substantial iPhone credits. These are time-sensitive signals, not permanent prices: check Tom’s Guide’s deal coverage and TechRadar’s coverage, then confirm the exact terms on the carrier’s own offer page.
Unlocked buying versus carrier financing
Apple
Apple says an iPhone bought by paying in full or using eligible Apple financing is unlocked. Carrier installment purchases can remain locked until paid off. Apple Card installments are advertised at 0% APR over 24 months where eligible. U.S. iPhone 17-series eSIM-only hardware makes carrier compatibility especially important for international travel and smaller providers.
Samsung
Samsung’s checkout can vary by model, color, storage and stock. Before paying, confirm whether the selected device is unlocked, whether a discount is instant or delivered as bill credits, the Samsung Financing terms, trade-in conditions, return window and warranty. Samsung’s direct Galaxy purchase page should be checked alongside the official MSRP baseline.

For a promotion, calculate:
Effective phone cost = remaining device balance + taxes + required plan premium − monthly promotional credits.
Do not subtract the entire advertised trade-in amount if it arrives only through future bill credits. Include financing interest, cases, screen protectors, chargers, AppleCare+ or Samsung Care+, battery replacement, repair deductibles and the cost of replacing ecosystem accessories when switching brands.
Illustrative—not a current promotion
Suppose a $900 phone receives a $300 immediate discount, a $200 trade-in, $75 in tax and $240 of extra plan cost over two years:
$900 − $300 − $200 + $75 + $240 = $715 effective two-year cost.

Quick Recap
- Confirm battery-health guarantees and whether batteries or screens were replaced with authorized parts.
- Check cosmetic grading, carrier compatibility, eSIM support and the return period.
- Label the generation difference when comparing an older discounted Galaxy with a new iPhone 17.
- Compare the remaining software-support period with the expected ownership horizon.
Which buying route fits you?
Choose iPhone when
- You already own Apple devices and want continuity.
- You want a straightforward unlocked purchase and broad accessory availability.
- You value the lower listed 256GB mainstream price.
- You rely on iOS-specific apps, messaging or video workflows.
Choose Samsung when
- You want more sizes, storage tiers, customization or multitasking.
- You value zoom cameras, high-refresh displays or a foldable form factor.
- You are willing to compare trade-in offers and carrier conditions carefully.
- You need 512GB without moving to the highest iPhone tier.
Wait or buy refurbished when
- Your current phone works and a major sale is approaching.
- A carrier offer is attractive only because of a more expensive plan.
- You switch carriers, travel internationally or need an immediately unlocked device.
- You want a compact budget phone and have not compared certified previous-generation models.
Bottom-line winners by situation
- Lowest unlocked mainstream price at matched storage: iPhone 17 256GB, listed at $829 versus $899.99 for Galaxy S26 256GB.
- Lowest mainstream entry price: Essentially tied at about $799, but Samsung supplies a 128GB tier.
- Most promotional flexibility: Samsung, based on the range of direct trade-in and carrier offers reported in August 2026; verify each offer’s plan and credit term.
- Premium value: Depends on size and features; iPhone 17 Pro starts $200 below the S26 Ultra, but the Ultra is a larger class.
- Foldable value: Samsung by default, because Apple has no foldable iPhone.
- Best ecosystem continuity: Stay with the platform whose watch, tablet, earbuds and services you already own.
- Best for carrier freedom: Buy an unlocked device outright or with financing that clearly leaves it unlocked.
