Adobe did not prove that it was secretly training generative-AI models on customers’ private files. The company said Firefly was trained on licensed and public-domain material, not ordinary customer work, and that customers retain ownership. But Adobe’s June 2024 terms used broad language about accessing and processing content stored on its servers. The resulting controversy exposed a more consequential question for subscribers: can Adobe explain important limits clearly before asking customers to accept them?
As of August 18, 2026, Adobe’s policy is more specific. Personal-account users can turn off content analysis for product improvement; business accounts are automatically opted out; and Adobe says customer content is not analyzed to train generative-AI models, except material submitted to Adobe Stock. Those assurances reduce the immediate AI-training concern. They do not erase the credibility damage caused by the original rollout.
What happened in June 2024
Creative Cloud and Document Cloud users were asked to reaccept updated Terms of Use. The language covered Adobe’s ability to access, process, analyze, review and license content uploaded to its services. Many photographers, illustrators, agencies and editors reasonably read that as potentially authorizing broad use of private work, including AI training.
Adobe’s first clarification arrived on June 6, 2024, followed by a fuller explanation on June 10 and a promise that revised language would roll out around June 18. Adobe did not admit that it had trained generative AI on everyone’s files. Its position was that the wording described permissions needed to operate cloud services, improve products, enforce rules and comply with law. The problem was that customers had to infer those limits from legal text rather than receiving them plainly at the acceptance screen.

Adobe’s June 6 clarification said it did not take ownership of customer content and that Firefly was trained on licensed content, including Adobe Stock, and public-domain works whose copyright had expired. Its June 10 update promised clearer licensing language and an explicit commitment not to train generative-AI models on customer content.
What Adobe’s access language actually covers
“Adobe can access your work” is too broad without identifying the file’s location and the purpose of processing.
| Category | What the current or historical policy says |
|---|---|
| Local-only files | Adobe’s current FAQ says content stored or processed locally is not analyzed for product improvement. A local file can still be uploaded when a user invokes a cloud-dependent feature. |
| Cloud files | Content stored or processed on Adobe servers may be analyzed for product improvement, subject to the applicable setting and exceptions. |
| Service operation | Server processing can be required for syncing, previews, thumbnails, collaboration, document functions and other requested features. |
| Safety and legal review | Adobe says automated systems may screen uploaded content for illegal or abusive material. A limited human review can follow a flag or occur where law, security or fraud investigations require it. |
| Voluntary submissions | Feedback, beta, prerelease, user-study and improvement programs can involve separate permissions. Adobe Stock submissions are treated separately from ordinary private Creative Cloud files. |
Adobe’s 2024 explanation described access for ordinary cloud functions as well as automated screening for illegal material. That is not the same as a person routinely reading every file, and neither is the same as using files to train a generative model.

Content analysis is not generative-AI training
The distinction matters for both privacy and budgeting decisions. Adobe’s current Content Analysis FAQ, updated June 4, 2026, says Adobe may analyze server-processed or server-stored content for product improvement, subject to settings and consent rules. The same FAQ says Adobe does not analyze customer content to train generative-AI models, except content submitted to Adobe Stock.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Ownership concerns who retains copyright and other rights. Adobe says customers own their work.
- License concerns the permission Adobe receives to operate and improve services.
- Access concerns whether Adobe systems or authorized personnel can process or view a file.
- Product improvement can involve machine-learning systems or derived characteristics without being generative-model training.
- Moderation concerns scanning for illegal, abusive, fraudulent or otherwise prohibited activity.
Therefore, “not used to train generative AI” does not mean “never processed,” “never scanned,” or “never accessible.” Adobe also says valid legal process can require disclosure of user data; cloud storage is not an absolute shield from authorities. See its government-request transparency page.
What changed in the current policy
Date-stamped to August 18, 2026, Adobe’s practical position is clearer than the original acceptance prompt.

Personal accounts can opt out
- Sign in to your Adobe account page.
- Open Privacy settings.
- Find Content analysis for product improvement.
- Turn the toggle Off.
Adobe says turning this setting off does not disable Adobe features. It limits product-improvement analysis, not the processing needed to deliver a feature you request, security controls, moderation, legal compliance or every voluntary-submission program.
Business profiles are opted out by default
Adobe’s FAQ says business accounts and business profiles are automatically opted out of product-improvement content analysis. Organizations should still review their own administrator controls, contracts and storage architecture.
Exceptions still matter
Opting out does not prevent analysis of material voluntarily submitted to feedback, beta, prerelease, improvement or user-study programs. Adobe Stock contributor uploads are a separate case. A user who stores an original locally but then invokes a cloud feature has also changed the data path.

Why the clarification did not restore trust
The controversy was not merely a technical misunderstanding.
- Legal opacity: Adobe’s lawyers could identify the intended limits; ordinary customers had to decode broad phrases such as improving services.
- Bad timing: The prompt arrived during an intense fight over creators’ rights and generative AI.
- Commercial sensitivity: Professionals may store unreleased campaigns, client-confidential designs, medical or legal documents and unpublished intellectual property in cloud-connected workflows.
- Cloud dependence: Users cannot always tell which desktop actions remain local and which upload files for previews, syncing or collaboration.
- Reliance on after-the-fact promises: Blog posts and FAQs helped, but customers wanted narrow, binding language before acceptance.
- Switching costs: Adobe files, plug-ins, fonts, templates, team training and client compatibility make migration expensive.
Adobe itself acknowledged that it should have modernized and clarified the terms sooner. That admission addresses communication, not whether every original clause was unlawful. The lasting question is why customers had to create the pressure before receiving the explanation.

Privacy terms and cancellation practices are separate legal issues, but customers experience them as one relationship. In June 2024, the Federal Trade Commission alleged that Adobe hid early-termination fees and made cancellation difficult, particularly for annual plans paid monthly. Adobe disputed those allegations and said its terms and cancellation process were transparent; its position appears in this company statement. Adobe and the Department of Justice announced a settlement on March 13, 2026; Adobe’s statement did not constitute an admission of wrongdoing.

For U.S. customers, Adobe’s current subscription terms say an annual plan paid monthly can carry a fee equal to 50% of the remaining contract balance when canceled after the first 14 days. The same page uses illustrative standard monthly prices of $69.99 for Creative Cloud Pro and $22.99 for a single-app plan, while warning that prices vary. Read the current subscription terms before signing up or canceling.
The financial lesson is straightforward: a low introductory price can hide a longer commitment, and a privacy toggle can address one kind of analysis without stopping all cloud processing. Both require reading the exact plan and setting rather than relying on a headline.
What professionals should do now
- Turn off Content analysis for product improvement on personal accounts if you do not want that optional analysis.
- Do not submit confidential work to feedback, beta, prerelease or improvement programs unless your client agreement permits it.
- Keep sensitive originals on encrypted local storage where practical, with independent backups.
- Review which Adobe features upload files to servers; a locally saved file can leave the device when a cloud feature is used.
- Confirm that client, medical, legal, government or nondisclosure agreements permit the chosen cloud workflow.
- Use organization-managed business or enterprise controls for team projects. Adobe’s enterprise guidance also warns that personal material may need to be moved out of team or enterprise storage.
- Before canceling, export files, preserve fonts and plug-in dependencies, verify the plan type and calculate any early-termination charge.
Should you switch from Adobe?
There is no universal “privacy winner.” Evaluate the workflow you actually pay for.
| If your priority is… | Adobe is stronger when… | Consider alternatives when… |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe-native compatibility | Clients, agencies and archives depend on Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere or Acrobat formats. | You can standardize on different formats and absorb conversion or training costs. |
| Lower recurring cost | You need many integrated applications and the subscription replaces several separate tools. | You mainly need photo, vector or layout work; Affinity is a credible competing suite (official site). |
| Fast collaboration and templates | Creative Cloud libraries, fonts, reviews and enterprise administration are central. | Your work is primarily social graphics, presentations or lightweight team production; see Canva Pro. |
| Minimal cloud dependence | You accept server processing for syncing and collaboration. | You can keep originals local and upload only derivatives required by a service. |
Do not assume an alternative automatically has better AI, privacy or cancellation terms. Check each vendor’s current policy, data location, export options and contract before migrating. The cost of plug-ins, templates, archived projects, staff retraining and client compatibility can outweigh a lower monthly bill.

Adobe eventually answered the narrow allegation: it says ordinary private customer content is not analyzed to train generative-AI models, and it added a clearer opt-out for product-improvement analysis. That is materially better than the ambiguous 2024 rollout.
But trust is broader than one AI promise. It depends on whether material changes are disclosed plainly, whether limits appear in enforceable terms, whether customers can make a meaningful choice and whether the company behaves consistently over time. Adobe’s terms may now be clearer; the reason customers still hesitate is that clarity arrived after they had already been asked to accept uncertainty.
