That promotion is not verified as active on August 18, 2026, so do not treat the old “buy now” headline as a current offer. Check the live listing’s price, seller, stock, memory capacity, accessories, shipping and returns before paying.
PCWorld’s original report described a complete-looking bundle, but its value depends on the quality of the power supply, cooling and storage—not just the number of items in the box.
What the original $129 kit included
According to the March 14, 2025 PCWorld report, the iRasptek package contained:
- An 8GB Raspberry Pi 5
- A 64GB microSD card with Raspberry Pi OS described as preloaded
- A 27W USB-C power adapter
- A case and small cooler
- A card reader
- Two 4K HDMI cables
Those are the contents of the reported listing, not a guarantee that every current iRasptek listing is identical. It also was not a complete desktop computer: you would still need a display, keyboard and mouse for direct desktop use.

How to check whether a current listing is genuinely a deal
- Confirm the exact Raspberry Pi 5 memory size. Listings that merely say “Pi 5 compatible” may not include a genuine board.
- Check whether the seller is Amazon, an authorized Raspberry Pi reseller or an unknown marketplace vendor.
- Read the current contents list for the microSD card, power adapter, case, cooling and cables.
- Verify stock, shipping charges, Prime or coupon restrictions, delivery date and the return policy.
- Look for clear power specifications: Raspberry Pi 5 is designed around a 27W USB-C supply with 5V/5A capability.
- Check whether the card contains an official Raspberry Pi OS installation and whether the seller provides a warranty.
If any of those details are missing, compare the price with a board and accessories purchased separately instead of assuming the historical $129 price still represents good value.
What Raspberry Pi 5 gives you
The Raspberry Pi 5 uses a 2.4GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 processor (Broadcom BCM2712) and VideoCore VII graphics. Raspberry Pi lists dual 4Kp60 HDR HDMI output, 4Kp60 HEVC decoding, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0/Bluetooth Low Energy, Gigabit Ethernet, two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, a standard 40-pin GPIO header and a PCIe 2.0 x1 interface. It also has a real-time-clock connector and a power button. See the official Raspberry Pi 5 product page.
The current official memory lineup and list prices are:
| Memory | Official list price | Good fit |
|---|---|---|
| 2GB | $50 | Command-line projects, lightweight services and simple automation |
| 4GB | $60 | Most beginner desktops, coding and general projects |
| 8GB | $80 | Heavier multitasking, containers and development environments |
| 16GB | $120 | Memory-intensive workloads with a known need for extra RAM |
These figures come from Raspberry Pi’s product brief and cover the board only. Storage, power, cooling, case and cables cost extra.

Is an 8GB bundle good value?
At the reported $129 price, about $49 remained above the official $80 8GB board price to cover the 64GB card, 27W adapter, case, cooler, card reader, cables and software preparation. That could be attractive for a first-time buyer who owns none of those items.
The arithmetic is only a starting point. A genuine, compliant power supply and reliable storage are more valuable than extra HDMI cables. A case that blocks airflow can make an included cooler ineffective, while a poor-quality or worn microSD card can produce boot failures and data corruption. Buyers who plan to run a server continuously may prefer a high-endurance card or an SSD rather than a preloaded generic card.
Power and cooling are not optional details
Use an appropriate USB-C supply
Raspberry Pi recommends a 27W USB-C power supply for Pi 5. Raspberry Pi documentation explains that a 3A supply may boot the board but can reduce the current available to USB peripherals. The official supply is rated at 5.1V and 5A and supports USB Power Delivery; specifications are on the Raspberry Pi 27W power-supply page.
An underpowered phone charger can cause under-voltage warnings, disconnected USB devices, failed boots, storage corruption or instability when the processor is busy. Do not call a third-party adapter “official” unless the listing proves it.

Plan for active cooling
Raspberry Pi says Pi 5 performs best with active cooling, especially under sustained workloads. The official Pi 5 case includes a fan, and the Active Cooler is intended for a board used without a fan-equipped case. Raspberry Pi describes the fan options and connector in its hardware documentation.
- Light desktop use may be acceptable with a basic cooler.
- Compiling, gaming, video work, AI and server workloads should use active cooling.
- Overclocking requires proper active cooling; a small generic heatsink is not automatically equivalent to the official Active Cooler.
What you still need for a first setup
For a directly connected desktop, Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation identifies the practical essentials:
- Display or television
- Micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable if the kit’s cables do not match your display
- Keyboard and mouse
- Network connection, either Wi-Fi or Ethernet
- A suitable USB-C power supply and boot media
You may also need an external SSD, backup storage, a powered USB hub, GPIO components, sensors, a breadboard, jumper wires, a camera or a display HAT. A headless server can omit the display, keyboard and mouse after network access is configured.
First boot and recovery steps
- Insert the supplied microSD card.
- Connect the display, keyboard and mouse if you are using a desktop.
- Connect Ethernet or configure Wi-Fi.
- Connect the compliant USB-C power supply.
- Complete Raspberry Pi OS’s first-run setup.
- Update the installation:
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade -y
sudo reboot
Raspberry Pi OS is the official free operating system, and its 64-bit version supports newer 64-bit models including Pi 5; see the Raspberry Pi OS documentation.

- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 16GB with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (16GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
If the bundled card fails, reimage a reputable high-endurance replacement with Raspberry Pi Imager. Also test with USB accessories disconnected, verify the power supply, and check the micro-HDMI cable and display input. Raspberry Pi can boot from microSD, USB storage, network storage or PCIe-connected storage, depending on configuration and hardware.
Storage upgrades and the PCIe caveat
Pi 5 exposes a PCIe 2.0 x1 interface, but common NVMe installations require an M.2 HAT or another adapter. Raspberry Pi’s computer documentation gives this example for PCIe boot configuration:
sudo rpi-eeprom-config --edit
BOOT_ORDER=0xf416
For a non-HAT+ device, it also specifies:
PCIE_PROBE=1
Reboot after editing so the EEPROM can update. Raspberry Pi says the board is configured for PCIe Gen 2.0; Gen 3.0 is not certified and may be unstable. See the computer hardware documentation.
Choose the configuration that fits your use
Choose 2GB or 4GB
For coding lessons, basic automation, a lightweight server or a simple desktop, 2GB or 4GB can reduce the total cost. Four gigabytes is the more flexible general-purpose choice when the price gap is modest.
Best Value
- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 32GB EVO+ Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit 45W PD Power Supply for the Raspberry Pi 5
- Display Cable - 6 foot (Supports up to 4K 60p)
Choose 8GB
Eight gigabytes makes more sense for desktop multitasking, containers, development tools, heavier browser use and other memory-intensive projects. More RAM does not automatically make every workload faster; storage, software, processor load and thermals can matter more.
Choose 16GB only with a specific reason
The 16GB model is expensive relative to the board’s other options. It is best reserved for a workload that demonstrably benefits from the additional memory, rather than as a default beginner purchase.

It is not a universal replacement for a modern laptop, high-end gaming PC, NAS or commercial streaming box. Software compatibility, storage reliability and hardware acceleration vary by workload, and x86-only applications may not run.
Buying separately versus a bundle
| Option | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Live 8GB third-party kit near $129–$150 | New buyers wanting convenience | Accessory quality and seller reliability must be verified |
| Bare 4GB or 8GB board plus selected accessories | Owners of compatible equipment or buyers seeking quality control | Requires more shopping and setup |
| Official-accessory bundle | Always-on use and reliability-focused buyers | Usually costs more than generic kits |
| 2GB kit | Simple projects and minimum-cost experimentation | Less memory headroom for desktop multitasking |
For current availability, check the official Raspberry Pi buying page, official 27W supply page, Micro Center’s Raspberry Pi category and PiShop US’s board listings. Indexed Micro Center signals included approximately $104.99 for a 4GB board, $109.99 for a 2GB starter kit, $179.99 for a 4GB official-accessory kit and $269.99 for an 8GB CanaKit PRO kit. Those were store-specific indexed prices, not guaranteed August 2026 offers.
When to buy—and when to walk away
Buy the kit when
- The live price is close to the historical $129 deal.
- The listing clearly includes a genuine 8GB Pi 5.
- The adapter is clearly rated for Pi 5 use and the cooling suits your workload.
- The seller, storage card and return policy are trustworthy.
- You do not already own compatible accessories.
Buy the board separately when
- You already have power, storage, a case and cables.
- You want an SSD or higher-quality microSD card.
- You prefer official Raspberry Pi accessories.
Avoid the listing when
- The seller is unknown or the RAM size is unstated.
- The power adapter is not clearly USB-C PD with suitable ratings.
- The case and cooler provide no credible airflow for sustained workloads.
- The microSD card is unbranded, suspiciously large or poorly reviewed.
- The bundle costs nearly as much as a reputable 4GB or 8GB configuration with official accessories.
The Bottom Line
The $129 iRasptek 8GB Raspberry Pi 5 kit was a compelling March 2025 promotion, but that price and stock are not established today. Buy only after checking the live listing’s seller, RAM, 27W power specification, cooling, storage, returns and total delivered cost. If those details fail scrutiny, a 4GB or 8GB board from an authorized seller paired with reliable power and cooling is the safer value.
