Apple’s March 3, 2026 laptop launch was really two updates: a 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air with the standard M5 chip, plus 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max. They went on sale March 11, 2026. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with the regular M5 is a separate model announced in October 2025, not part of the March Pro-chip launch.
For most buyers, the M5 Air is the value choice. Choose the 14-inch M5 Pro only when its display, ports or sustained cooling matter; reserve M5 Pro and M5 Max configurations for workloads that can use substantially more graphics, memory and external-display capacity.
What Apple announced
MacBook Air with M5
The new Air comes in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes with Apple’s standard M5 processor. Colors are sky blue, midnight, starlight and silver. Starting storage is now 512GB—double the previous entry level—and configurations can reach 4TB. Apple lists up to 18 hours of battery life. The design remains fanless and broadly familiar, with a Liquid Retina LCD, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe 3, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a 12MP Center Stage camera. It supports up to two external displays. Apple’s N1 wireless chip adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, provided your router and peripherals support those standards.
Specifications and configurations are on Apple’s announcement and the MacBook Air product page.

What changes with M5?
M5 adds a faster CPU, a new-generation GPU with Neural Accelerators in each GPU core, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, higher unified-memory bandwidth and stronger on-device AI capability. In the Air, Apple specifies a 10-core CPU, up to a 10-core GPU and 153GB/s memory bandwidth, which it describes as 28% higher than M4. Apple also claims up to four times the M4 Air’s AI-task performance. Those are Apple test results using selected systems and workloads, not a universal real-world speed rating.

The Air can feel close to the standard-M5 Pro in everyday browsing, documents, calls and ordinary photo editing. Its fanless design is quieter and lighter, but long exports, builds or renders can be limited by heat. Apple has not published an independent percentage for that sustained-performance difference, so do not treat a short benchmark as a guarantee.
Launch prices and availability

| 16-inch MacBook Pro, M5 Max | $3,899 | $3,599 |
The retrieved announcement did not provide a complete Air configuration price table. A March 20, 2026 comparison listed the 13-inch Air at $1,099 and the 15-inch at $1,299; treat those as historical figures, not guaranteed current prices. Check Apple’s live Air store and live Pro store on the day you buy. A reported June 25 price increase makes stale launch prices especially risky.

Which MacBook should you buy?
For students, office users and travelers: MacBook Air M5
Choose the Air for portability, silence and value. The 13-inch model weighs about 2.7 pounds; the 15-inch is about 3.3 pounds. It is well suited to browser work, writing, communication, programming, classes and light-to-moderate creative applications. Choose 15 inches for workspace; choose 13 inches for frequent travel.
For a better screen and built-in connectivity: 14-inch MacBook Pro
The standard-M5 14-inch Pro makes sense when you specifically value the XDR display, 120Hz ProMotion, HDMI, SDXC, better speakers, active cooling or the 1TB starting configuration. If you do not use those advantages, the Air usually leaves more money available for memory.
For professional development, video and 3D: M5 Pro
M5 Pro is the sensible professional tier for large software builds, multiple-stream high-resolution video, engineering, scientific work and substantial multitasking. The 16-inch model provides a larger canvas and the biggest battery option.

For exceptional GPU or local-AI workloads: M5 Max
M5 Max is justified by advanced visual effects, 3D animation, 8K post-production, simulations or large local models that can exploit its GPU and memory. Buying it simply because it is the fastest chip is poor value for ordinary productivity.
Memory, storage and connectivity decisions
- Prioritize unified memory: it cannot be upgraded later. Developers using virtual machines, creative professionals and local-AI users should choose enough memory before adding optional storage.
- Do not underestimate 512GB: video libraries, games, photo catalogs and model files can fill the Air’s new baseline quickly. Budget for external storage if needed.
- Price the whole setup: HDMI monitors, SD cards and several high-speed drives may require docks on the Air. The Pro’s built-in ports can narrow the apparent price gap.
- Verify display support: the exact chip and configuration determine how many external screens work with your dock.
- Check wireless compatibility: Wi-Fi 7 requires a compatible router, and Bluetooth 6 benefits require compatible accessories.
Apple Intelligence and local AI
M5’s Neural Accelerators are hardware designed to speed AI workloads, including Apple Intelligence and locally run models. Software availability is a separate issue: features depend on macOS Tahoe, supported languages, region and Apple’s rollout. Third-party model performance also depends on memory capacity, model size, software optimization and the laptop’s thermal limits. Check Apple’s Apple Intelligence requirements before treating an M5 purchase as a guarantee of a particular feature.
Should you upgrade an existing Mac?
Intel Mac owners
The move to M5 brings broader gains in speed, battery life, software support and Apple Intelligence compatibility. Confirm the requirements for the specific features you need, but the upgrade case is generally strongest for Intel users.
M1 or M2 owners
An M1 or M2 Mac remains adequate for ordinary work. Upgrade when you need more storage, newer wireless standards, faster local AI, sustained professional performance or an XDR/120Hz display—not merely because a new chip exists.

Expect a more specific return: a workload that benefits from additional GPU capacity, memory, ray tracing, display support or faster wireless. Compare your current memory pressure and export or build times before spending.
Ways to reduce the cost
Apple’s Trade In value depends on model, condition and configuration; compare it with a private sale. Variable inventory at Apple Certified Refurbished can make an M4 or earlier Mac better value when M5-specific features are unnecessary. AppleCare terms and deductibles vary by product and region; review AppleCare+ at checkout. Eligible U.S. customers can review 0% APR Apple Card Monthly Installments and 3% Daily Cash terms at Apple’s financing page; availability is not universal.
Verdict
The M5 Air is the mainstream recommendation: it is light, silent, starts with more storage and covers most school, office, travel, coding and general creative work. Buy the standard-M5 14-inch Pro for its screen, ports, speakers and sustained cooling. Step up to M5 Pro only when your work regularly uses professional CPU/GPU capacity or multiple displays, and choose M5 Max when the resulting time savings on extreme workloads can repay its premium.
