Short answer: A reported Amazon robotics forecast says automation could let the company avoid hiring more than 600,000 additional workers by 2033. That is not evidence of a plan to fire 600,000 people currently employed by Amazon. The figure comes from leaked internal planning documents reported in October 2025, and Amazon has said the documents reflected one team’s view rather than the company’s overall workforce strategy.
What the reported 600,000 figure actually means
The New York Times reported that leaked Amazon documents and interviews described a robotics goal that could help the company handle much higher sales volume while avoiding more than 600,000 future hires by 2033. The Verge separately reported an intermediate estimate of about 160,000 avoided U.S. hires by 2027. These are forecasts attributed to internal documents, not announced headcount reductions.
“Avoiding hires” is materially different from replacing existing employees. It means Amazon’s workforce could grow more slowly than it would have under a less automated operating model. Some tasks may disappear, jobs may be redesigned, and attrition or redeployment may reduce staffing without conventional layoffs. The documents do not establish that 600,000 current warehouse workers will be dismissed.
| Claim or number | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|
| More than 600,000 by 2033 | A reported estimate of future hiring Amazon might avoid, based on leaked documents reviewed by The New York Times. |
| About 160,000 by 2027 | An intermediate forecast attributed to the same internal planning, reported by The Verge. |
| About 75% automated | A reported internal target whose denominator is unclear: it could refer to tasks, processes, facilities, orders or another operational measure—not 75% of employees. |
The full documents and the baseline workforce model behind the estimate are not publicly available. Amazon has not publicly confirmed a company-wide plan to eliminate 600,000 current jobs.

Amazon’s response and separate workforce cuts
Amazon reportedly characterized the leaked material as the perspective of a single internal team, not its overall hiring strategy. That response does not disprove a long-term reduction in hiring needs; it means the projection should not be treated as an approved corporate forecast.
Amazon has announced other workforce actions, but they should not be conflated with the robotics estimate. The company said approximately 14,000 corporate roles were affected in an October 2025 restructuring (Amazon’s announcement), followed by approximately 16,000 additional roles in January 2026 (Amazon’s update). Those announcements concern organizational reductions, primarily in corporate functions, and do not prove that warehouse robots directly caused them.
Amazon has also continued hiring and investing in operations. In a robotics announcement, it said it was hiring at operations facilities and had announced 250,000 holiday-season positions. Seasonal hiring can coexist with a plan to require fewer permanent workers per unit of sales in the future.

How large is Amazon’s robot operation?
Amazon’s own figures show a rapidly expanding but diverse robotics fleet. In 2023 materials, the company said it had more than 750,000 mobile robots. In its 2025 shareholder letter, CEO Andy Jassy said more than one million robots were operating in fulfillment centers. The later figure includes specialized machines, not one million humanoid substitutes for one million people.

Why Amazon is automating
- Handle more orders without proportional headcount growth.
- Increase throughput and inventory density in fulfillment buildings.
- Reduce repetitive walking, reaching and lifting.
- Improve delivery speed and inventory availability.
- Standardize processes and address labor-availability and operating-cost pressures.
The leaked documents reportedly included calculations suggesting automation could reduce cost by roughly 30 cents per item in some scenarios. That is a document-based estimate, not a universal or independently verified Amazon-wide saving. Amazon says Sequoia can identify and store inventory up to 75% faster and can reduce fulfillment-center processing time by up to 25% in its tested context; those are company-reported, system-specific claims (Amazon).
What robots can—and cannot—do
Automating a task is not the same as automating an entire job. Robots are effective at repeatable movement, storage, sorting and some forms of grasping. They are less reliable with irregular, soft, fragile or damaged products and with situations that require judgment.

- People still handle exceptions, quality problems, unusual inventory and process changes.
- Robotic facilities need maintenance, software support, safety oversight and human supervision.
- Automation economics vary with building design, order profile, product mix, geography and labor costs.
- Some systems work only in facilities designed or modified around the technology.
A worker’s role may therefore shift toward monitoring, quality control, exception handling, safety or maintenance rather than disappear immediately. A highly automated building can still employ substantial numbers of people while requiring fewer workers for each additional unit of volume.

Will automation create jobs too?
Amazon says robotics has created more than 700 categories of new skill jobs, including robotics and mechatronics technicians, reliability maintenance engineers, flow-control specialists and robotics floor monitors (Amazon and MIT study; Amazon robotics overview). The company also describes apprenticeships and mechatronics training (Amazon announcement).
“More job categories” does not show how many people hold those jobs, whether they are in the same locations, or whether workers whose repetitive tasks decline can qualify for them. Technical roles may require different education, schedules or mobility. Amazon’s $2.5 billion Future Ready 2030 commitment is a company training initiative, not a guarantee that every affected employee will be retrained or retained (2025 Sustainability Report).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “75% automated” does—and does not—tell us
The reported 75% figure cannot be translated into “75% of Amazon employees will disappear.” A percentage of operations might measure workflows, tasks, facilities, items or orders assisted by machines. Amazon’s public materials use different measures—for example, the company describes systems that process particular product types or assist with a share of orders. Those measures are not interchangeable.

Until the internal documents’ definition and denominator are public, the safest interpretation is that 75% describes an automation ambition for operational activity, not a percentage of jobs eliminated.
Labor and community consequences
Even without mass layoffs, avoided hiring can have major effects. Regions that rely on fulfillment centers may see fewer entry-level openings as sales grow. Remaining jobs could become more technical or involve monitoring faster systems, potentially increasing work intensity. Automation can reduce physical strain in some tasks while introducing new human-machine safety risks.
The gains and losses may also be geographically concentrated. A technician opening in one metropolitan area is not an automatic substitute for a picking job in another. The 600,000 figure is specific to Amazon’s reported scenario; it is not a forecast of warehouse employment across the economy.
How to judge future headlines and forecasts
- Ask whether the number means current jobs eliminated or future hires avoided.
- Identify whether the source is a formal company plan, a team forecast or a scenario.
- Define “robot”: specialized industrial equipment is not the same as a humanoid worker substitute.
- Check the denominator behind percentages such as “75% automated.”
- Separate warehouse operations, corporate employees, contractors and seasonal workers.
- Look for evidence that a pilot reached sustained production; projects can be canceled, as Blue Jay illustrates.
What workers can do now
Workers interested in staying close to automated operations can watch for demand in industrial maintenance, mechatronics, controls, robotics troubleshooting, safety and compliance, inventory systems, operations analysis and software support. Career Choice, apprenticeships and other training may help, but access, location and qualifications vary; training is not a promise of continued employment.
Bottom line
Amazon is making a substantial, ongoing investment in warehouse automation. The reported 2033 figure means robots could allow the company to avoid roughly 600,000 future hires under an internal scenario—not that Amazon has announced the firing of 600,000 current employees. The forecast is uncertain, its “75%” definition is unclear, and Amazon’s robotics strategy will evolve through deployments, redesigns and cancellations.
