Update: This was a historical Presidents’ Day 2025 promotion, not a live August 2026 deal. Deal coverage reported a likely base 14-inch MacBook Pro with Apple’s M4 chip at about $1,399 at Best Buy—roughly $200 below an approximately $1,599 regular price. The exact Best Buy SKU, condition and inventory should be verified before treating the figure as a current offer.
What the Best Buy deal actually was
The headline most plausibly referred to the 14-inch MacBook Pro introduced in late 2024 with the base M4 processor. Indexed coverage placed the entry configuration at approximately $1,399 during the Presidents’ Day sales period, which ran through February 17, 2025. A March 31, 2025 deal roundup also listed a 14-inch, 16GB model with a 512GB SSD at $1,399. See the reported deal context at Ground News and 9to5Mac.
Those reports do not establish the exact Best Buy model number, finish, seller, fulfillment method or whether every $1,399 listing was new inventory. Apple sells several 14-inch MacBook Pro configurations, so a price headline without those details is incomplete.
| Reported deal detail | What it means |
|---|---|
| Likely computer | 14-inch MacBook Pro with the base Apple M4 chip |
| Likely memory and storage | 16GB unified memory and 512GB SSD |
| Reported sale price | Approximately $1,399 |
| Implied regular price | Approximately $1,599 |
| Implied saving | Approximately $200, or 12.5% |
| Availability | Not established from the indexed reports; ZIP-code, stock and condition could change the offer |
How low was “a new low”?
“New low” should not be read automatically as the lowest price ever for every M4 MacBook Pro. The available coverage does not provide a complete, retailer-wide price history or define whether it tracked only Best Buy, new products, a particular color or a specific SKU. The defensible description is that $1,399 was a newly reported low for the covered entry configuration at that time.

Why the discounted M4 Pro was attractive
The base M4 MacBook Pro offered a stronger fit than a fanless Air for buyers who regularly sustained demanding workloads. Its active cooling can maintain performance during long exports, compiles or renders, while the Pro line adds a higher-end display and a broader built-in port selection. It was also a way to obtain a recent Pro-class laptop without paying full price for a newer generation.

Good matches
- Developers compiling projects or running multiple demanding tools.
- Photographers and video editors who benefit from sustained performance and the Pro display.
- Professionals who need more ports and headroom than a basic ultraportable provides.
- Buyers who can use 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage without expensive upgrades.
Reasons to choose something else
- Users who need more than 16GB of memory, more than 512GB of storage, or the additional graphics capacity of an M4 Pro or M4 Max.
- People who prioritize the lightest possible Apple laptop and mainly browse, write, stream or use office applications.
- Buyers who specifically want the newest chip generation and intend to keep the computer for many years.
M4 MacBook Pro versus a newer MacBook Pro
A newer MacBook Pro may deliver improvements in processor performance and efficiency, but the size of the advantage depends on the workload and the exact chip. Do not assume a particular percentage without a comparable test. Check whether the newer machine also includes more memory or storage, because those upgrades can matter more than a modest processor difference.
The older M4 model made financial sense when its price was materially lower. If a current-generation model was only slightly more expensive, the newer machine’s longer runway and higher performance could justify paying the difference. Conversely, a large premium for a similarly configured newer model reduced the value of buying the latest generation.

M4 MacBook Pro versus MacBook Air
A MacBook Air was generally the better personal-finance choice for school, web work, communications, documents and light creative tasks. It is lighter and silent because it has no fan. The Pro premium is easier to justify when you need sustained performance, the Pro display, additional ports or more demanding media and development workflows.
Choosing the Air also avoids paying for capacity you will not use. Choose the Pro only when its sustained-performance and hardware advantages address a real workload rather than simply sounding faster on a specification sheet.

Check these details before buying a discounted listing
- Confirm that the processor is listed as M4, not M4 Pro, M4 Max or an older M3 model.
- Verify the unified-memory and SSD capacities; do not infer them from the headline.
- Make sure the condition says new if that is what you want. Best Buy can display open-box, refurbished and marketplace offers alongside new products.
- Confirm that Best Buy—not a third-party marketplace seller—is responsible for the sale and fulfillment.
- Enter your ZIP code to check shipping, pickup and local inventory.
- Read the applicable return, exchange and restocking terms.
- Confirm Apple warranty eligibility, particularly for marketplace or non-new inventory.
- Calculate the total after sales tax, membership requirements and any promotion-specific gift-card terms.
- Compare the final price with a newer MacBook Pro offering similar memory and storage.
- Check the stated expiration date; Presidents’ Day offers can end on the holiday or earlier when stock is exhausted.
For a current listing, use Best Buy’s MacBook Pro search page at Best Buy. Apple’s current specifications are on its MacBook Pro page, and Apple-refurbished inventory is listed at Apple Certified Refurbished.
Who should have bought at $1,399?
The reported price was compelling if the listing was a new base 14-inch M4 model and you needed a Pro laptop’s display, ports and sustained performance. It was less compelling for light-duty users who could meet their needs with a cheaper Air, or for professionals who would immediately need more memory, storage or an M4 Pro-class chip.
Because the promotion was tied to Presidents’ Day 2025, the original “last year’s” wording is now misleading. Treat the $1,399 figure as historical unless a live retailer page confirms the same configuration and price.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The reported $1,399 Best Buy price was about $200 off the likely base 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro during Presidents’ Day 2025. Buy an equivalent listing only if the configuration, condition and seller check out and a newer model is not close in price; otherwise compare the latest MacBook Pro and the less-expensive MacBook Air.
