Dan Rosckes, Apple’s vice president of global sourcing and supply management, told his team in October 2024 that he was leaving the company and retiring after roughly 24 years. Reports identified longtime deputy David Tom as the expected successor, but Apple had not publicly confirmed the personnel change in the original coverage. Available reporting through August 18, 2026, still does not establish Rosckes’s exact final working day or independently confirm Tom’s formal appointment.

What was reported

The retirement report was published on October 7, 2024. AppleInsider and 9to5Mac said Rosckes informed colleagues that he would soon leave Apple after about 24 years. His reported formal title was vice president of global sourcing and supply management; “global chief of procurement” is a descriptive shorthand for the function he led, not necessarily Apple’s official title.

The reports did not give an exact departure date, a reason for retirement, or details about any advisory role after he left. They also said Apple had not publicly announced the change at that time.

AppleInsider’s report and 9to5Mac’s account are the contemporary sources for the announcement.

Who is Dan Rosckes?

Rosckes is an operations executive rather than a consumer-facing Apple leader. His organization obtains the components used in products such as the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch, and manages the commercial relationships needed to keep those components available.

A Purdue Engineering profile lists Daniel Rosckes as Apple’s vice president of global procurement since approximately December 2000. That approximate start date broadly fits the 24-year tenure reported in October 2024, but it should not be treated as a verified anniversary date.

Reports said Rosckes had led Apple’s hardware procurement organization since 2022. Before then, procurement leadership was shared with Tony Blevins. After Blevins left Apple, Rosckes reportedly took sole charge and reported to Sabih Khan, then Apple’s senior vice president of operations.

David Tom was the reported successor

Apple was expected to replace Rosckes with David Tom, his longtime top deputy. The succession details came from reporting attributed to Bloomberg and reproduced by other outlets, rather than from an Apple announcement.

Why Apple’s procurement chief matters

At Apple’s scale, procurement is a product-execution and financial function, not routine office purchasing. The group’s work includes:

  • Finding and qualifying components in the volumes required for major launches.
  • Negotiating prices, capacity, delivery terms and other supplier agreements.
  • Balancing cost against quality, technical specifications and production timing.
  • Managing exposure to shortages, supplier concentration and geopolitical disruption.
  • Introducing new components at commercial scale without compromising launch schedules.

Those decisions influence the cost of building each device and therefore contribute to gross-margin performance. They also affect whether Apple can produce enough units when a new iPhone, Mac or other product reaches customers. Bloomberg-distributed reporting described supplier negotiations as relevant to Apple’s profitability and ability to deliver products on schedule; it did not suggest that Rosckes personally controlled Apple’s margins or every supplier contract. The financial significance is explained in the Bloomberg-distributed report.

Procurement is only one part of Apple’s wider operations system. Manufacturing, logistics, fulfillment, planning and supplier responsibility are related but distinct functions. Apple’s 2025 operations announcement describes that broader scope.

The Tony Blevins context

Rosckes’s move into sole procurement leadership followed Tony Blevins’s departure in 2022. Axios reported that Apple removed Blevins after he appeared in a TikTok video and made crude remarks about women and his compensation. Axios’s account provides that context.

That history explains the organizational timeline, but the available reporting does not connect Blevins’s departure to Rosckes’s later retirement. It should not be read as evidence of a broader procurement crisis.

What the retirement does—and does not—mean

What it suggests

The reported plan points to an internal handoff. Tom’s long tenure and responsibility for silicon, wireless components and batteries could preserve institutional knowledge during the transition, particularly in categories that require long lead times and close coordination with product teams and suppliers.

Rosckes’s tenure also spans Apple’s expansion from the iPod era through the iPhone-driven growth of its hardware business, increasingly complex components, pandemic-era supply disruptions and heightened scrutiny of labor and environmental practices. Those milestones provide context for the depth of experience leaving the organization, but the sources do not attribute specific strategic decisions to Rosckes personally.

What it does not establish

  • No reported product delay or launch disruption.
  • No announced change in Apple’s supplier geography or sourcing strategy.
  • No demonstrated change in component pricing, iPhone prices or company margins.
  • No evidence of a broad executive shake-up beyond this procurement transition.
  • No confirmed explanation for Rosckes’s retirement.

A personnel change in a critical function can matter to investors and suppliers, but the evidence supports a succession story—not a confirmed strategic pivot or financial outlook change.

What remains unconfirmed

  • Rosckes’s exact last day at Apple.
  • Whether he remained as an adviser after announcing his departure.
  • Whether Apple formally announced David Tom as his successor.
  • Tom’s current official title as of the latest available sources.
  • Any supplier, manufacturing or component-strategy changes following the transition.

Until Apple or a current authoritative filing confirms those points, descriptions of Tom as Apple’s current procurement chief or claims that the retirement changed Apple’s strategy go beyond the available evidence.
