Treat posts as leads only: confirm the ISBN and edition, then obtain the book from an authorized publisher, library, or open-education collection. A file being free to download does not make its distribution lawful or safe.
Start with the exact textbook details
Before searching Reddit, copy the assignment information from your syllabus, learning-management system, bookstore listing, or professor’s reading list.
- Full title and author or editor
- Edition and publication year
- ISBN-13 and ISBN-10
- Publisher
- Required chapters
- Whether an access code or homework platform is required
An ISBN is usually more precise than a title. One title can have several editions, international versions, loose-leaf formats, instructor editions, and bundles with different access codes.
Also ask whether the newest edition is mandatory. A useful question for your instructor is: “Would an earlier edition or an equivalent open textbook cover the assigned material?” Do not assume that an older edition matches page references, exercises, data, terminology, or legal and medical guidance.

Use Reddit as a discovery tool
Where to look
r/textbook focuses on textbook questions and lower-cost options. University subreddits can be more useful for course reserves, library links, professor expectations, used-book exchanges, and local borrowing. Subject communities may point you to an open textbook rather than the commercial title.
Community membership, post visibility, rules, and links change. A current monitoring page describes r/textbook as textbook-focused, but it is not an official Reddit policy source: GummySearch’s r/textbook page. Students also ask for textbook help in university communities such as r/UofT, r/RIT, and r/UNT. Treat every recommendation as unverified until you check the destination independently.
Search strings that work
On Reddit, combine the ISBN with the title and a legitimate-access term:
"Exact Textbook Title" ISBN"Exact Textbook Title" edition"Author Name" "course code""Textbook Title" OER"Textbook Title" library"Textbook Title" legal
Search engines can narrow results to a community:
site:reddit.com/r/textbook "Exact Textbook Title"site:reddit.com "Exact ISBN"site:reddit.com/r/[university-subreddit] "Course Code" textbooksite:reddit.com "Exact Textbook Title" "open textbook"
In a request, include the title, author, edition, publication year, ISBN, course, and whether selected chapters or an equivalent legal book would work. Say that you are seeking an authorized or open-access source. Never post student-account credentials, payment details, or suspicious file-hosting links.
Verify legality, edition, and file safety
Legal-status checks
Prefer links to a publisher’s open-access page, a college or public-library domain, a recognized nonprofit OER repository, or a page that clearly states its Creative Commons or other license. A library e-book may be free to borrow while still subject to account, geographic, simultaneous-user, or lending-period limits.
Be especially cautious when a recent commercial textbook is offered anonymously, a site claims to have every new book, or a page asks you to disable security software or enter a credit card for a supposedly free download. “Free to download” is not the same as authorized to copy or share; copyright and licensing rules also vary by country.
Edition checks
- Match the ISBN, edition number, year, authors, and publisher.
- Check chapter order, page count, and required exercises.
- Distinguish regional or international editions from the assigned version.
- Avoid files labeled instructor edition, test bank, or solutions manual unless your instructor explicitly authorized them.
- Confirm whether the course needs a bundled or separately purchased access code.
File-safety checks
- Download only from an official or reputable institutional source.
- Keep your browser, operating system, and security software updated.
- Scan downloads before opening them.
- Avoid executable files disguised as PDFs or EPUBs.
- Do not install an extension or application merely to open a book.
- Report suspicious Reddit links to moderators and Reddit.
A PDF extension does not prove that a file is safe. VPNs, ad blockers, Tor, and download managers also do not make an unauthorized copy lawful.
Legal places to find free textbooks
OpenStax
OpenStax offers free online reading and PDF access for many introductory subjects, including science, mathematics, business, and social science. Coverage is not universal, and some courses still require paid homework software. OpenStax’s April 22, 2026 licensing update says its library is transitioning to CC BY-NC-SA licensing while continuing to support noncommercial educational use: licensing update. Check the license on the individual book.

Open Textbook Library
The University of Minnesota’s Open Textbook Library can be searched by subject, title, author, or review. Its FAQ explains that books in the collection can be adopted without additional permission or paperwork under their listed licenses: FAQ. Check the format, reviews, license, and chapter sequence before substituting it.
LibreTexts and other OER collections
LibreTexts is particularly useful for science, mathematics, engineering, and related subjects. It may present modular pages or collections rather than one downloadable file. Also search OER Commons, MERLOT, BCcampus OpenEd, and Open Textbook Network resources. These are discovery sources, not guarantees that your assigned title is available.
Public-domain collections
For older literature, history, philosophy, mathematics, and primary sources, check Project Gutenberg, Internet Archive, HathiTrust, and The Online Books Page. Public-domain status depends on the work, country, edition, translation, and publication history. A modern annotated edition of a public-domain classic can still be copyrighted.
Your college or public library
- Search the catalog by ISBN.
- Search title and author separately.
- Check course reserves.
- Search the library’s e-book platforms.
- Ask about interlibrary loan.
- Ask whether an earlier edition is available.
- Contact accessibility services about an authorized digital copy if applicable.
Library access may be temporary or restricted; it is not necessarily a permanent downloadable PDF.

When the exact title is not free
Use this order to minimize cost while preserving course compatibility:
- Borrow the exact book from the library or course reserve.
- Request it through interlibrary loan.
- Ask the instructor to approve an earlier edition or equivalent OER book.
- Compare legitimate used copies and rentals by exact ISBN.
- Consider short-term digital access or purchasing only required chapters when lawfully offered.
Used and rental listings can be found through AbeBooks, Amazon Books, Chegg, eCampus, and CampusBooks. Digital options include VitalSource, Pearson, and Cengage. Availability and prices vary by title, region, format, rental period, shipping, and access-code status, so verify the total cost on the vendor’s current page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A free textbook may not include the course requirement
The book and the homework platform can be separate products. A free or borrowed copy may not provide adaptive homework, quizzes, laboratory simulations, test banks, course-specific problem sets, or a valid access code. Confirm exactly what the syllabus requires before choosing a substitute.
Common failure modes
The Reddit post disappears
Posts can be deleted, made private, or lose their files. Search the title and ISBN again instead of relying on a saved link.

The download is the wrong item
Check for a preview, missing chapters, poor OCR, a different edition, an international version, or an instructor/answer-key edition.
The substitute does not match the class
Open textbooks can use different notation, examples, terminology, and chapter order. Obtain instructor approval before relying on one, especially in medical, legal, regulatory, scientific, or technical courses where older information may be unsafe or obsolete.
A site demands an account
An account is not automatically fraudulent, but inspect the provider’s identity, requested data, payment requirements, terms, and access conditions. A “download” that becomes a recurring subscription is not free access.

Quick decision tree
Need the exact assigned title?
- No: Search OER repositories for an equivalent book and ask whether the instructor accepts it.
- Yes: Check the library catalog and course reserve first.
- Library copy unavailable: Look for an authorized publisher or OER version.
- No authorized free copy: Ask about an older edition, then compare a used copy, rental, or legitimate digital option.
