Best overall for most suitcases: the Master Lock 4680DBLK is a compact, resettable three-digit combination lock for ordinary zipper pulls. Choose the 4688D when pulls are separated, the 4696D when they sit far inside a recess, or the Samsonite cable lock when one flexible cable must work across different bags. TSA approval means authorized screeners can open and relock the lock; it does not make luggage theft-proof.
What “TSA-approved” actually means
A TSA-approved lock uses the Travel Sentry red-diamond system so authorized airport security screeners can open and relock compatible baggage without routinely cutting the lock. Master Lock describes the purpose as allowing inspection and relocking “without damaging the lock.” NBC Select’s summary of TSA guidance says TSA has universal master keys under agreements with Safe Skies and Travel Sentry, so certain branded locks “may not have to be cut” during inspection.
The red diamond identifies the Travel Sentry system; it is not a security rating or a promise that the lock will stop a determined thief. The cited product pages and comparison do not provide independent attack testing, durability rankings, or theft-prevention statistics. A lock can deter casual tampering and keep zipper pulls together, but it cannot secure every weak point on a suitcase.
The eight best TSA-approved locks
| Lock | Best for | What the cited source establishes | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Master Lock 4680DBLK | Compact everyday zipper lock | 1-3/16-inch (30 mm) metal body, 3/4-inch (19 mm) steel shackle, resettable three-digit combination (manufacturer specifications) | Small shackle may not reach widely spaced or recessed pulls |
| Master Lock 4688D | Separated zipper pulls | Flexible shackle and resettable combination (Master Lock catalog) | Confirm the flexible shackle’s route and clearance |
| Master Lock 4696D | Recessed or distant pulls | Extended-reach shackle and resettable numeric combination (Master Lock catalog) | Longer reach can be unnecessary bulk on compact luggage |
| Master Lock 4683Q | Families or several bags | 7/8-inch solid-metal TSA lock in a four-pack (official listing) | Check that each shackle fits the individual bag hardware |
| Master Lock 4681TBLK | Travelers who prefer a larger body | Solid-metal TSA lock designed for travel (Master Lock) | Larger body may not clear tight zipper channels |
| Master Lock 4691DWD | People who remember words better than numbers | Resettable word-combination TSA lock (Master Lock catalog) | Verify the word wheels are readable in your lighting |
| Forge Open Alert 4-pack | Multiple bags and an inspection indicator | Kit Authority’s September 5, 2026 comparison names it best overall and highlights an open-alert indicator | The comparison says it was researched, not hands-on tested; inspect current availability and fit |
| Samsonite Travel Sentry 3-dial combination cable lock | Mixed bag types and easy-to-read dials | Kit Authority highlights oversized, high-contrast dials and flexible cable routing | Check cable length and the exact routing around your pulls |
Master Lock dimensions above are manufacturer specifications, not independent test measurements. Prices and stock change, so treat any retailer listing as a point-in-time offer rather than a permanent value.

- MOST DURABLE TSA RECOGNIZED AND ACCEPTED TSA LOCK. Forge TSA approved luggage locks are designed from the ground up to be the toughest luggage locks around. Our special alloy lock bodies, tightly braided and sheathed steel cables, hardened steel cable lock ends as well as patented internal mechanisms can take such a pounding that we back our product up with an unconditional lifetime guarantee. If you can find a way to break these locks, we’ll gladly refund or replace them.
- EASY TO SET 3 DIGIT COMBINATION. Our tsa locks have an easy to use lever mechanism to set the combination. Simply set the locks to the factory default combination of 0-0-0, flip the lever with a pen and enter your personal combination. The combination can also be changed as many times as you like. Never worry about accidently changing your lock to the wrong combination or your combination being changed during rough handling.
- SECURITY WITH THE FLEXIBILITY OF A CABLE LOCK. Cable locks can handle situations that normal lock shackles simply can’t. Our lock’s cable is thin enough to thread through all standard sized zippers and hard case lock holes but strong enough to protect your belongings. At a length of 4 in from end to end and an internal looped length of 1.5 in when locked, our cable offers the flexibility to secure nearly any suitcase, hard case, gun case, etc. on the market.
- ALWAYS RELOCKED, ALWAYS PROTECTED. Most TSA locks on the market do not need to be re-locked by a TSA agent after their inspection is completed. With our TSA luggage lock, the agent has to re-lock your suitcase to remove their key. With Forge you never worry about your suitcase locks being left open again.
- MANY USES WITH LOTS OF VARIETY. Forge travel locks can be used on a wide variety of items besides suitcases or luggage. These locks can be used on a briefcase, gym locker, purse, backpack or laptop bag.
How to choose the right lock for your suitcase
1. Measure the zipper-pull geometry first
- Ordinary, close-together pulls: a short shackle such as the 4680DBLK is usually the simplest fit.
- Widely separated pulls: look for the 4688D’s flexible shackle or a cable design that can route between the pulls.
- Recessed pulls: the 4696D’s extended reach is intended for hardware that sits farther inside the case.
- Multiple bags: a four-pack such as the 4683Q or Forge Open Alert can cover a family’s luggage, provided every shackle fits.
Measure the distance between the pull holes and the depth of the zipper channel with the bag closed. A lock body that fits one suitcase can foul another because zipper garages, sliders, and pull orientation vary.
2. Pick the mechanism you will reliably use
Numeric combinations are common and quick to reset. The 4691DWD uses a word combination instead, which can be easier for travelers who remember a word better than a number. A key lock avoids remembering a combination but introduces a physical key that can be misplaced; the supported picks here are combination or cable-combination models.

3. Consider visibility and inspection feedback
Large, high-contrast dials can be easier to read in a dim airport. The Samsonite cable lock is highlighted for that design. The Forge Open Alert is highlighted for an indicator that can show whether the lock was opened. An indicator can tell you about an opening event; it does not establish who opened the bag or whether contents were handled safely.
4. Do not equate weight with proven resistance
Solid-metal bodies may feel more substantial, but the cited sources do not include standardized attack tests. Select a body size that clears your luggage hardware instead of choosing the heaviest lock by default.

Combination locks versus key locks for travel
A combination lock keeps the access method with you and avoids carrying a separate key. It is practical when several people need access, although forgotten combinations can delay you. A key lock can be straightforward if one traveler controls the key, but losing that key creates its own problem. For checked luggage, either style still needs a Travel Sentry-compatible design if you want authorized screeners to open and relock it without routinely cutting the lock.
How to set and use a TSA lock
- Before packing, open the lock using its factory setting or current combination and read the model’s reset instructions.
- Choose a combination that is not obvious from your name, birthday, or luggage tag.
- Attach the shackle or cable through both zipper pulls and close the lock fully. Test the locked position while the suitcase is empty.
- Scramble the dials after locking and keep the combination in a secure password manager or another private place.
- After collection, inspect the lock and zipper area. On a model with an open-alert feature, check the indicator according to its instructions.
What the red diamond tells you
The red diamond is the Travel Sentry mark used to identify locks designed for the system’s authorized inspection access. It does not certify a particular body material, shackle diameter, cable length, or resistance to forced entry. Fit and construction still vary by model.
Rank #4
- Next-Generation TSA008 Luggage Security: These TSA-approved locks use an advanced cylindrical lock core and precision 3D-shaped keyway; a red indicator tells you when TSA has opened your luggage
- Relocked Before the TSA Key Releases: The TSA008 mechanism requires the lock to be secured before the inspection key can be removed, helping prevent luggage from being left unlocked after screening
- Premium Quality Inside and Out: A zinc alloy body and metal load-bearing and operating parts deliver lasting reliability. Only the dials and red indicator are plastic. Backed by a lifetime warranty
- Stable 4-Digit Combination: Choose from 10,000 codes. The precision reset mechanism helps each code engage fully and stay consistent, reducing setup mistakes that can cause combination problems later
- Flexible Steel Cable for Worry-Free Travel: The coated cable fits zipper pulls on suitcases, carry-ons, backpacks, and travel cases, providing versatile security without adding unnecessary bulk
Limits, availability, and evidence
No independent performance statistics or laboratory scores are established for these eight picks in the cited material. The September 5, 2026 Kit Authority comparison is explicitly a researched comparison rather than a hands-on test. Master Lock catalog pages cited for several models do not state a publication year. Product availability, retailer pricing, and regional acceptance can change; verify the current listing and destination-airport requirements before travel.
