Short answer: T-Mobile has repriced legacy service more than once, but there is no verified announcement of a new, universal increase for every older-plan customer. The story that prompted this question was a May 22, 2024 PhoneArena report. It described increases of up to $5 per line on selected older plans and higher prices for some Go5G 55 plans sold to new customers. A separate 2026 program moved some legacy customers to newer plans, generally raising voice-line charges by about $4 on average and up to $6 in reported cases.
What happened, and what has not been announced
The 2024 and 2026 events are different:
- May 2024: T-Mobile reportedly raised existing-customer rates by as much as $5 per line on selected Magenta, Magenta MAX, Magenta 55+, Magenta First Responder, T-Mobile ONE, Simple Choice and certain Sprint-era plans. Some accounts reportedly received $2 or $3 increases instead. Separately, prices for some Go5G 55 variants rose for new customers; existing customers on those plans reportedly kept their then-current pricing.
- July 2026: T-Mobile retired some old billing plans and automatically moved affected customers to current families such as Essentials, Essentials Saver, Experience More, Experience Beyond and Experience Signature. Coverage put the average increase at roughly $4 per voice line, with some increases reaching $6. Some customers reportedly saw no increase.
The 2026 migration demonstrates an ongoing willingness to retire or reprice legacy plans. It does not prove that another specific increase is scheduled for every remaining grandfathered customer. Your notice, plan terms and account billing control what happens to you.
How the 2024 increase differs from the 2026 migration
| Event | Who it concerned | What changed | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2024 price increase | Selected existing customers on older plans; some new Go5G 55 customers | Reported increases up to $5 per line; smaller increases appeared on some accounts | PhoneArena, May 22, 2024 |
| 2026 legacy-plan retirement | Some customers on plans dating from the 3G, 4G and Sprint eras | Automatic move to a current plan, with reported average increase of about $4 per voice line and increases up to $6 | MacRumors; Fierce Network |
These are not the same as a bill becoming higher because an autopay discount ended, a device installment was added, a promotion expired, or taxes and fees changed. Before calling an increase a plan hike, identify the exact billing line that changed.
How much could your bill change?
The widely quoted 2026 figure is not a universal $6 increase. Reports describe an average of approximately $4 per voice line, with some lines increasing by up to $6. Tablet, watch and home-internet lines could have different adjustments, and free-line credits or account discounts can change the household total.

For example, a four-line account receiving a $4 increase on each paid voice line would rise by $16 per month before taxes. An account with a free line, device credits or an employer discount may see a different net change. Compare the total recurring bill, not a headline per-line number.
Which customers may be affected?
Reported examples include Simple Choice, T-Mobile ONE and ONE Plus, Magenta-family plans, Magenta 55+ and First Responder plans, and former Sprint plans. T-Mobile has not published a complete public list of every legacy plan included in the 2026 transition in the sources reviewed. Being on an old plan is therefore a reason to check your account, not proof that you will be moved or charged more.

What Price Lock protects—and what it does not
T-Mobile describes several generations of price protection in its Price Lock FAQ. The dates below are general eligibility categories; your exact plan and account history still matter.
| Protection | Typical qualifying activation or switch date | General scope |
|---|---|---|
| Five-Year Price Guarantee | On or after April 23, 2025 | Monthly rate for talk, text and T-Mobile 5G data on qualifying plans |
| Last Month Price Lock | January 18, 2024–April 22, 2025 | Applicable recurring service rate under the then-current terms |
| Original Price Lock | April 28, 2022–January 17, 2024 | Applicable recurring service rate under the qualifying offer |
| Un-contract Promise | Before April 28, 2022 | Protection described in the terms for qualifying mobile accounts |
A guarantee on the service rate is not a freeze on every dollar of a bill. T-Mobile says taxes and regulatory fees, device payments, insurance, add-ons, third-party services, satellite connectivity, equipment, one-time credits and per-use charges can remain subject to change. Feature changes and network-management practices also are not automatically frozen.

Can T-Mobile move you off a protected legacy plan?
There is no responsible one-size-fits-all answer. T-Mobile’s FAQ says that, except for applicable price-lock protections, it may change, limit, suspend or terminate service terms. Whether a particular migration conflicts with your protection depends on the exact plan, activation date, later plan changes, the wording of your guarantee and whether T-Mobile treats the action as a rate increase, plan retirement or migration. Read the notice and ask T-Mobile to identify the applicable term in writing rather than assuming either that all legacy customers are protected or that none are.
Why T-Mobile says it is modernizing plans
T-Mobile has characterized the 2026 moves as retirement of very old plans and billing codes, with transfers to plans designed for its current 5G network and service features. The company says customers retain existing benefits while gaining newer capabilities and that qualifying current plans can receive a five-year guarantee. Coverage of the company’s explanation appears in Tom’s Guide and Fierce Network.

There is also a business incentive. T-Mobile’s 2026 investor materials projected 2.5%–3.0% postpaid average-revenue-per-account growth as customers move toward higher-priced or more premium plans; Reuters reported that the migration was expected to cause a temporary increase in churn. Those targets provide commercial context, not proof that every individual migration was made solely to raise revenue. See T-Mobile’s Capital Markets Day update and the company’s investor release.

A customer who rarely streams, travels internationally or upgrades phones may receive little practical value from premium features. Conversely, a frequent traveler or heavy hotspot user could value benefits that were absent from the old plan.

- Open T-Mobile’s notice. Record the old plan name, replacement plan, effective date and stated monthly change.
- Save bills before and after the change. Download at least one complete bill from each period.
- Verify the plan and line prices. Check the T-Life app or your web account, including voice, tablet, watch and home-internet lines.
- Reconcile every discount and credit. Check free lines, Insider or employer discounts, autopay discounts, trade-in credits and device installments.
- Check Price Lock eligibility. Use the activation or plan-change date and the official FAQ; do not assume the guarantee covers taxes or add-ons.
- Request a written explanation. Ask support whether the change is a plan retirement, a rate increase or another billing action, and ask which term authorizes it.
- Do not voluntarily switch first. T-Mobile warns that changing plans can remove the old promotion and may make the former pricing unavailable.
Should you stay, change plans or leave?
| Option | May fit when | Main risks |
|---|---|---|
| Stay on the migrated plan | You value T-Mobile coverage, want no porting disruption, or will use the added hotspot, roaming or upgrade benefits | Higher recurring charge; guarantees may exclude many bill components |
| Change to another T-Mobile plan | A cheaper current plan meets your data needs and preserves useful account discounts | Old promotions, free lines or device offers may be lost permanently |
| Switch carriers | The increase is multiplied across many lines and another network works at home, work and travel locations | Coverage differences, taxes, expiring switcher offers and forfeited device credits |
For a fair comparison, use the same number of paid lines and include free lines, taxes, fees, device balances, trade-in credits, hotspot use and international needs. Official comparison starting points include Visible, Mint Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket, AT&T, Verizon, Google Fi and Xfinity Mobile. Prices and promotions change, so compare the current total rather than an advertised teaser rate.
Common traps
- Free lines: A per-line notice may not equal the account’s net increase after credits.
- Device credits: Leaving before promotional credits finish can make the remaining device balance due.
- Plan-switch irreversibility: You may not be able to restore the old price or promotion.
- Former Sprint plans: A Sprint-era billing history can carry legacy discounts or terms even after migration to T-Mobile systems.
- Notice versus bill: Estimated changes can differ from the final bill when taxes, credits or equipment charges are applied.
- Prepaid and home internet: Their eligibility and guarantee rules are not automatically the same as postpaid voice plans.
Bottom line
T-Mobile’s May 2024 legacy-plan increase was real, but it is not a current announcement of an unlimited series of future hikes. The July 2026 migration shows that the company is willing to retire or reprice selected older plans: reported changes averaged about $4 per voice line, with some reaching $6, while some customers saw no increase. Check your own notice, bill and Price Lock terms before changing plans. The cheapest-looking alternative can cost more once lost discounts, device credits, taxes and required features are included.
