On December 17, 2024, Grammarly announced its intent to acquire productivity-software company Coda and said Coda co-founder and CEO Shishir Mehrotra would become CEO of the combined company. Grammarly did not disclose a purchase price. The deal was presented as a move beyond writing assistance toward an AI productivity platform combining writing, company knowledge, collaborative documents, workflows and agents.
The story did not end with the announcement: Grammarly adopted the Superhuman company name in October 2025, and Coda became Superhuman Docs on July 8, 2026. Existing Coda workspaces were described as continuing under their existing plans unless customers chose a Superhuman bundle.
The deal announced in December 2024
Grammarly’s official wording on December 17, 2024, was that it intended to acquire Coda. That distinction matters: the announcement described a transaction in progress, not a disclosed closing document or a published purchase price. Grammarly’s announcement did not state financial terms. Bloomberg Law reported that the companies expected a January 2025 closing, but that was contemporaneous reporting rather than a later, independently verified closing date (Bloomberg Law).
The historical valuations often cited alongside the deal are not its price: TechCrunch reported a $13 billion Grammarly valuation in 2021 and a $1.4 billion Coda valuation after Coda’s 2021 Series D. Neither figure should be treated as a current 2026 valuation or as the acquisition consideration (TechCrunch).

Leadership transition
- Incoming CEO: Shishir Mehrotra, Coda’s co-founder and CEO.
- Outgoing CEO: Rahul Roy-Chowdhury stepped down, remained on Grammarly’s board and became an adviser to Mehrotra.
- Deal structure: The public announcement called it an intended acquisition; no purchase price was disclosed.
The announcement does not establish that Roy-Chowdhury was fired or that there was a dispute, so those interpretations should be avoided.
Who is Shishir Mehrotra?
Mehrotra had led Coda and brought more than 25 years of technology experience, including service as YouTube’s chief product officer and chief technology officer. His background spans large-scale consumer products, product strategy and collaborative work software. Superhuman now identifies him as its CEO; his published biography is available from Superhuman.
His appointment signaled a change in emphasis. Grammarly had been identified primarily with writing and communication assistance, while Mehrotra’s Coda experience centered on documents that hold structured information, team processes and company knowledge.
What Grammarly acquired in Coda
Coda was more than a conventional word processor. It combined collaborative documents with tables, formulas, forms, automations, integrations called Packs and workflow-building tools. Its Coda Brain product was described as connecting company knowledge across more than 800 enterprise applications.

Those figures, like Grammarly’s own scale claims, are company-reported rather than independently audited market statistics.
| Grammarly brought | Coda brought |
|---|---|
| Writing, editing, brainstorming, authorship, plagiarism and AI assistance | Collaborative documents, structured data, formulas, workflows and automations |
| Distribution across applications and websites | A workspace for organizing company knowledge and executing team processes |
| An assistant operating across more than 500,000 applications and websites, reaching more than 40 million people daily and 50,000 organizations, according to Grammarly | Context from documents, tables, Packs and connected business systems |
Why Grammarly wanted Coda
The strategic logic was complementary rather than simply adding another chatbot. Grammarly supplied reach and a language interface; Coda supplied a place where an assistant could use context and create structured work.
From suggestions to actions
A writing assistant can improve a sentence without knowing a team’s operating context. A connected workspace can, in principle, use permission-aware company information, summarize documents, update a tracker, create an intake workflow or hand work to an agent. Grammarly described the intended platform as combining company knowledge, generative-AI chat, a productivity suite and AI agents.
Distribution plus destination
Grammarly’s cross-application presence could introduce assistance wherever people already write. Coda provided a destination in which that assistance could organize projects, records and repeatable processes. That distribution-and-context combination is the core business thesis behind the acquisition.
What users were promised initially
At announcement, Grammarly said both products would continue operating as customers knew them while deeper integration was developed. It specifically described upgrading Coda Docs with Grammarly Assistant capabilities and, over time, unifying the assistant and Coda Docs.
Those statements describe a direction, not proof that every proposed integration was delivered. Public materials do not provide a complete feature-by-feature accounting of the original roadmap, and permission-aware AI should not be assumed to be flawless without an organization’s own testing and controls.

What happened to the products by August 2026
Grammarly became Superhuman
On October 29, 2025, Grammarly announced the broader Superhuman company identity. Grammarly remains a distinct writing product within that wider suite, according to Superhuman’s support information.
Coda became Superhuman Docs
On July 8, 2026, Coda was renamed Superhuman Docs. The product is positioned as an AI-assisted document workspace. Superhuman says Docs AI can summarize a brainstorm, create a project tracker or build an intake workflow, and it promotes MCP connectivity for tools such as Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor. AI Views were identified as a closed beta in the launch announcement (Superhuman Docs).

Continuity for existing Coda customers
The transition FAQ says existing documents, workflows, tables, Packs, automations, formulas, plans and pricing remain intact unless a customer opts into a Superhuman bundle (Coda transition FAQ). Customers should still verify integrations, permissions, domains, automations and internal documentation after any account or URL change.

Checks for existing Coda customers
- Confirm that Packs, automations, formulas and external integrations still run as expected.
- Review workspace permissions, domains and administrator settings.
- Check whether a desired AI feature is generally available, beta, or limited to a particular plan.
- Do not assume the bundle is required to retain an existing Docs workspace.
Checks for Grammarly customers
- Separate established writing features from newer productivity or agent features.
- Review whether a capability requires a different plan or a bundle.
- For enterprise deployment, evaluate data permissions, auditability, administrator controls and model behavior before enabling broad access.
What the acquisition means for the market
The transaction fits a wider shift from standalone AI features toward integrated workplace systems. Grammarly was trying to expand from a point solution for writing; Coda added a structured, collaborative environment in which AI could organize and execute work. That puts the combined strategy in the same broad competitive conversation as Microsoft 365 with Copilot, Google Workspace with Gemini, Notion and Airtable, although the acquisition alone does not prove market leadership.
Recommended Free Tools
Potential benefits include richer context, a dedicated surface for AI-generated work and a link between natural-language requests and structured workflows. Risks include product sprawl, confusing brand architecture, overlap with established office and project-management suites, and enterprise concerns about permissions and AI-generated actions.
Alternatives for buyers
Selection depends on the system a team already uses:
- Notion suits teams seeking documents, wikis, databases and integrated AI in one workspace.
- Airtable is oriented toward structured relational data, operational workflows and custom business applications.
- Microsoft 365 with Copilot fits organizations standardized on Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint and Microsoft identity administration.
- Google Workspace with Gemini fits organizations centered on Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet and Google’s identity ecosystem.
These are selection options, not a ranked performance test; prices and feature availability change and should be checked directly with each vendor.
Bottom line for readers
Grammarly’s Coda move was an attempt to build a broader AI productivity platform, not merely to buy a document editor. Mehrotra replaced Roy-Chowdhury as CEO, the financial terms stayed private, and the product path eventually led to the Superhuman company and Superhuman Docs brands. Existing Coda customers were told their workspaces and plans would continue unless they opted into a bundle, but every organization should verify its own integrations, permissions and feature entitlements before changing accounts or enabling new AI capabilities.
