This was a historical outage on Friday, May 16, 2025—not an ongoing Apple Pay problem on August 18, 2026. Apple’s System Status reporting, as covered by MacRumors, listed issues affecting Apple Pay, Apple Card, Apple Cash and Wallet for some users. Apple later said the issues had been addressed.
What happened
Apple reported a service disruption involving several connected payment and Wallet services. The incident was broader than a single merchant, terminal, bank or customer account, but it did not affect every user or every transaction.
Apple Pay is the payment service used for contactless, in-app and web purchases. Apple Card is the credit-card account and its transaction and account-management functions. Apple Cash supports person-to-person payments and a stored balance. Wallet stores payment cards, passes, tickets and related credentials. A shared backend problem can therefore produce different symptoms across these products.
The available reporting does not identify a technical cause. It does not establish that the outage resulted from an iOS update, a bank, a payment network or malicious activity.

When the outage occurred
| Time (Eastern) | What was reported |
|---|---|
| Friday, May 16, 2025, about 11:44 a.m. | MacRumors reported the start of Apple’s service-status incident. |
| During the incident | Some users described failed payments, Apple Cash problems and delayed account or transaction information; other users said Apple Pay continued to work. |
| About 2:13 p.m. | Apple said the issues had been addressed, according to MacRumors. |
The reported interval is roughly two hours and 29 minutes. Individual features, regions and accounts may have recovered at different times, so that duration is not a guarantee for every user.
What users may have seen
Apple Pay purchases
Contactless payments at a store terminal could fail, while another Apple Pay purchase worked. In-app and website checkouts could also behave differently from in-store transactions. A payment prompt failing does not by itself prove that no authorization was created.

Apple Cash
Users could encounter errors when sending money or adding funds. A delayed Apple Cash balance or transfer record did not establish that money was permanently lost or that a transfer had completed.
Apple Card and Wallet information
Apple Card transactions, available credit or payment information could take longer to appear. Wallet could open normally while payment-related data was delayed or unavailable. User posts in the contemporaneous MacRumors discussion describe these symptoms, but anecdotes cannot show that every report had the same underlying cause.

Was Apple Pay completely down?
No. The evidence supports a partial or intermittent disruption affecting some users, not a universal failure. Some forum participants reported successful Apple Pay purchases during the incident, while others experienced repeated declines. The difference could reflect the affected service component, transaction type, issuer, region or account state.
The coverage is primarily U.S.-oriented. Apple Card and Apple Cash are not available in every country, so the incident should not be read as proof that every Apple user worldwide had access to—or problems with—the same services.

What to do when a payment fails during an outage
- Check the status source. For a live incident, consult Apple’s System Status page. The 2025 report cannot establish Apple’s status today.
- Do not immediately retry. First check the merchant receipt, bank account or card issuer. A declined-looking screen can follow an authorization that is still pending.
- Use an independent backup. Pay with a physical credit or debit card, cash, another payment method already accepted by the merchant, or a second card from a different issuer or network.
- For Apple Cash, pause repeated attempts. Wait for service recovery before repeatedly sending money or adding funds, then review the balance and transaction history.
- Recheck after recovery. Confirm whether the original payment settled, whether a pending authorization disappeared, and whether Apple Card available credit and recent activity are accurate.
- Escalate unresolved discrepancies. Contact the merchant or issuing bank for a settled duplicate, missing credit or unauthorized charge. Contact Apple Support when Wallet or Apple service data remains wrong after the systems recover.
How to interpret a failed or delayed transaction
- Declined transaction: The purchase normally needs another payment method, but verify that no authorization was created before trying again.
- Pending authorization: It may later settle or disappear; avoid creating a second charge until the status is clear.
- Completed purchase missing from Wallet: Confirm completion with the merchant or issuer rather than relying only on the Wallet display.
- Apple Cash transfer pending: Do not assume the funds are immediately available or permanently lost while service data is delayed.
- Two settled charges: Ask the merchant or issuing bank to investigate the duplicate.
A merchant terminal, issuer, network or account-specific problem can mimic an Apple outage. Testing another terminal or using a physical card can help distinguish those cases, but that troubleshooting does not identify the cause of the May 16 incident.
What the incident did—and did not—establish
- Apple’s status reporting identified Apple Pay, Apple Card, Apple Cash and Wallet as affected for some users.
- It did not show that all Apple Pay transactions failed.
- It did not establish a security breach or permanent customer losses.
- It did not publish a root cause in the cited coverage.
- It did not prove that every Wallet feature, country or account was unavailable.
Forum reports are useful evidence of mixed real-world symptoms, including successful purchases alongside failures. The associated discussion and follow-up page are available at MacRumors page 2, but user anecdotes are not a substitute for Apple’s status page or transaction records.

Resolution and current-status warning
MacRumors reported that Apple’s approximately 2:13 p.m. Eastern update said the issues had been addressed on May 16, 2025. This article should therefore be read as an archived outage report. If you are seeing a payment problem now, check Apple’s live status page and your card issuer rather than assuming the 2025 incident is still active.
