Comulate announced a $20 million Series B on February 11, 2025, led by BOND and Workday Ventures. The San Francisco company sells software primarily to insurance brokers, automating direct-bill reconciliation, cash application, carrier payables and revenue-integrity work rather than replacing an insurer’s core underwriting systems.

The financing is intended to expand Comulate beyond accounting automation toward a broader control layer connecting fragmented insurance systems. Its reported growth is notable, but the company’s savings and revenue figures have not been independently audited.

What Comulate raised

The round was led by BOND and Workday Ventures. Named additional participants were Neo, Spark Capital, Jonathan Crystal, Plaid co-founder Zach Perret and Applied Intuition CEO Qasar Younis.

The back-office problem Comulate targets

Broker accounting teams commonly move among agency-management systems, carrier portals, CRM records, policy and billing databases, spreadsheets, PDFs and email. Those systems often disagree about policy identifiers, commissions, payments and timing.

The result is slow month-end close and commission reconciliation, duplicate records, missing or underpaid commissions, manually prepared carrier payables and limited policy-level visibility into revenue. Errors can remain hidden until a payment, renewal or audit exposes them. TechCrunch described insurance billing and revenue management as a critical but historically overlooked enterprise-software category that often relies on generic systems or manual processes.

What the product does today

Comulate’s official product description positions it as an accounting-automation platform for large insurance brokers. Its workflows include:

Who appears to buy it

Publicly named customers include IMA Financial, The Baldwin Group, Risk Strategies and the Hilb Group. The evidence points chiefly to large or rapidly growing insurance brokers, especially multi-office organizations with complex direct-bill and carrier-payable processes, multiple agency-management systems and enough transaction volume to justify implementation.

That is a narrower market than the phrase “helps insurers” suggests. The available customer and product descriptions do not establish Comulate as a consumer-insurance, individual-agent or primarily carrier-facing platform. A March 2025 company-sponsored report said Comulate had partnerships with more than 50 Top 100 U.S. insurance brokers; that figure is a company claim tied to that later date.

Traction: strong signals, limited independent verification

In its funding materials, Comulate said revenue tripled during the preceding 12 months, reached eight figures in fewer than three years, and that its software reclaimed more than 350,000 hours while eliminating more than 90% of manual work in targeted accounting processes. Those are company-reported figures, not audited industry benchmarks.

TechCrunch cited approximately 260,000 hours saved in 2024. The two figures cover different stated periods, and the available accounts do not explain the measurement methodology, so they should not be treated as a single comparable time series.

The “90%” claim also applies to targeted workflows, not necessarily to 90% of all labor at a broker. Labor may be redeployed rather than eliminated, and realized savings depend on data quality, exception volumes and adoption.

Why Workday invested

Workday sells broad finance and human-capital software to large enterprises, while Comulate supplies an insurance-specific operational layer. The funding announcement said Comulate joined the Workday Partner Program to pursue deeper integration for shared customers.

That relationship could provide enterprise distribution and a path from broker accounting data into broader finance systems. It does not establish an acquisition, exclusivity, a particular ownership stake, revenue generated through the partnership or a completed technical integration.

What the new capital is meant to fund

Comulate said the money will support expansion of its technology stack into additional insurance functions, continued automation of manual back-office processes, a larger team and deeper work with customers and partners. Its broader positioning, described on its company page, is an automated control layer connecting fragmented insurance data and systems.

Three different scopes to keep separate

  • Current product: accounting and revenue-operations automation for broker workflows.
  • Near-term expansion: adjacent back-office processes that can use the same connected data.
  • Long-term ambition: a more comprehensive operating layer for insurance.

The financing supports that direction; it does not show that Comulate has already rebuilt the entire insurance operating stack.

What a broker should test before buying

  • Compatibility: verify each agency-management system, edition and data direction supported.
  • Implementation: scope mapping, historical-data migration, permissions and workflow redesign.
  • Exception handling: see how low-confidence matches, reversals, cancellations, endorsements, refunds, commission splits, duplicates and late carrier statements are escalated.
  • Controls: require approval steps, segregation of duties, audit trails, correction procedures and human review for material transactions.
  • Data quality: test conflicting identifiers, incomplete policy records and inconsistent carrier formats.
  • Complexity: evaluate multiple legal entities, offices, currencies and acquisition histories.
  • Evidence of recovery: request reproducible examples of recovered commissions and reconciliation accuracy, not only aggregate percentages.
  • Security and portability: review residency, access controls, encryption, retention, incident response and export of normalized data and workflow history.

Key trade-offs

Specialized layer versus general ERP

A purpose-built product can handle policy-level reconciliation, commissions and carrier payables more directly than a general ERP and may complement an existing finance stack. An ERP offers broader finance, procurement, reporting and workforce controls with an established enterprise relationship. The available evidence positions Comulate as a specialized, complementary layer—not a complete ERP replacement.

Automation versus financial control

Fewer manual touches can improve speed, but an incorrect automated match can create a financial error at scale. Buyers should insist on confidence thresholds, transparent exception queues and the ability to audit every automated decision.

AI versus workflow engineering

Comulate uses AI and machine learning, but the concrete customer proposition is workflow and accounting automation. AI may help read documents, match records, analyze discrepancies and prioritize exceptions; integrations, rules, controls and operational adoption determine whether those capabilities produce reliable results.

Why this funding matters for insurtech

The deal illustrates a shift toward infrastructure software for insurance operations rather than consumer-facing insurance applications. Insurance generates high transaction volumes and complex records, while broker back offices often cannot replace every incumbent system. A specialized layer can add automation without forcing a wholesale core-system migration.

The investment case therefore rests on embedded finance and revenue workflows, measurable recovery of commissions and labor capacity, and expansion from one valuable process into adjacent ones. The risks are equally operational: integrations can break when source systems change, new carriers or acquisitions may require custom work, and exception queues can recreate the manual burden the product promises to remove.

Bottom line

Comulate’s $20 million Series B is a substantial bet on vertical enterprise software for an unglamorous but financially important part of insurance. Today, its clearest product is broker accounting and revenue-operations automation. Its broader control-layer vision is plausible if it can maintain data quality, controls and integration reliability as it expands, but the company’s headline savings, revenue growth and customer counts remain self-reported rather than independently validated.
