The right choice still depends on your computer’s actual dimensions, daily load, closure preference and carrying style.

The Apex is the most balanced choice for a 16-inch work laptop, commuting and air travel. The $19 adjustable shoulder strap is optional, a meaningful cost and comfort issue for a full daily load. The bag is spot-clean only, so it is less forgiving of coffee, lunch or makeup spills than a washable canvas tote. Troubadour lists a five-year manufacturing-fault guarantee and a 100-day return window for new, unused products with tags.
There is a specification discrepancy worth noting: WIRED’s listing gives 19.7 × 18.5 × 2 inches, while the later official page gives 19.7 × 13.4 × 5.5 inches and 22 liters. Do not treat those measurements as interchangeable; confirm the current listing before purchase.
Best organized: Moment Everything Travel Tote
The official name is Everything Travel Tote (WIRED’s comparison table calls it “Everything Tech Tote”). Its 19-liter open compartment includes a padded laptop sleeve, two stretch bottle holders, accessory pockets and a removable Quick Divider. Top handles and an included removable crossbody strap make it easier to carry a mixed load; an optional camera insert is listed at $60. Details are on the Moment product page.
Choose it when chargers, camera equipment, lunch and small accessories need defined places but you still want a flexible central cavity. It lacks a luggage sleeve, so it is less convenient beside a rolling suitcase. Moment lists a lifetime guarantee for original owners covering manufacturing issues and 90-day returns. The bag was listed at $150 when checked, with stock and delivery subject to change.

Best modular leather tote: Cuyana System Tote
Cuyana offers separate 13-inch and 16-inch versions in LWG-certified Italian leather. WIRED listed them at $358 and $378 respectively. The system is deliberately configurable: a laptop sleeve is $98, a Flap Bag $138, a Zipper Pouch $148 and an adjustable strap $98. Calculate the configured total rather than comparing the base tote with rivals that include a sleeve.
The snap closure is attractive and quick but leaves a larger security gap than a full zipper on crowded transit. Select it for polished style and the ability to add organization over time; avoid it if you need maximum theft resistance, a fully enclosed top or a ready-to-go padded compartment. WIRED presents Cuyana’s Classic Easy Zipper Tote as the safer alternative for shoppers who require a zip top.
Best formal leather bag: Leatherology Alex Laptop Bag Set
This structured Italian-leather set is aimed at offices and meetings. WIRED lists a $495 price, with a $415 sale price shown at the time, a removable laptop envelope, a bottom-zipper trolley sleeve and dimensions of 10.75 × 17.75 × 4.25 inches. It carries a laptop, documents and essentials without the slouch of a soft tote.
The included sleeve is described as fitting a 15-inch MacBook Air without a case; that is not a promise for every 15-inch computer or a bulky protective shell. Capacity is modest, and the one-year warranty and $40 monogram option should be weighed against the price. Recheck any sale price before ordering.

Best compact travel tote: Tom Bihn Nomad 11
At 11 liters and 14 × 10 × 4.5 inches, the Nomad 11 is intentionally small. WIRED lists compatibility with laptops up to 13 inches, 630-denier ballistic nylon, a luggage pass-through, three color combinations and a lifetime warranty. The official product destination is Tom Bihn’s Nomad page.
Its limited capacity discourages the overpacking that makes one-shoulder carry painful. It suits a compact laptop, charger, notebook and a few personal items, not gym clothes or camera kits. Care is hand wash, so it is not the easiest option for messy commutes.
Best under $50: Baggu Horizontal Zip Duck Bag
The Horizontal Zip Duck Bag costs $42–$48 depending on print, fits laptops up to 15 inches and adds a zip top, adjustable crossbody strap and machine-washable cotton canvas containing 65 percent recycled material. The official page is the place to check current colors and stock.
It has no dedicated laptop sleeve or impact padding. Use a separate padded sleeve, especially because the soft bottom and sides do not suspend a computer above the ground. It is an excellent low-cost, washable tote for light commuting, school and errands only when that extra protection is part of the setup.

How to choose a genuinely laptop-safe tote
Measure the computer, not just the screen
Record the laptop’s width, depth and thickness, then add the dimensions of its case. A 16-inch MacBook Pro and a 16-inch Windows laptop can have different chassis sizes. Leave room for the zipper or flap to close without pressing on the corners.
Know what “laptop compartment” means
- Dedicated padded compartment: sewn-in cushioning and a defined position; best protection among tote designs.
- Removable sleeve: useful and replaceable, but check whether it stays elevated and whether it fits with your case.
- Large unpadded compartment: physical space only, not impact protection.
- Open tote: budget and flexible, but requires a third-party padded sleeve.
Check whether the laptop can slide out when the bag tips, whether the bottom has padding and whether hard objects can strike the computer from the sides.
Match capacity to your load
- Laptop, charger and notebook: a structured leather or compact tote is sufficient.
- Laptop, tablet, bottle and lunch: choose a medium commuter tote with bottle storage.
- Camera gear or travel clothing: prioritize dividers and a genuinely open central compartment.
- Minimal load: an 11-liter bag reduces the temptation to overpack.
Choose the closure for your environment
A full zipper improves security and spill resistance. Magnetic and snap closures provide faster access but leave gaps. Open tops are convenient for bulky items and poor for crowded transit or sudden rain.
Check carrying comfort
Short handles may not clear a winter coat. Look for adequate handle drop, a wide strap and padding where the load contacts your shoulder. A crossbody strap spreads weight but can let a heavy tote swing or tilt the laptop. For a daily load that feels heavy, a backpack or true convertible design is usually more comfortable than any one-shoulder tote.

Separate weather claims
Water-resistant fabric, waterproof zippers and a covered opening are different protections. Even the Apex’s waterproof-material claims do not make an open or poorly closed top submersible. Keep the laptop in its sleeve during prolonged rain.
Value organization realistically
Reachable pockets for keys, passports and chargers matter more than a high pocket count. Elastic bottle pockets prevent tipping; too many shallow compartments can consume usable space. A divider is valuable for camera gear but can slow packing bulky clothing.
Account for cleaning and care
Baggu is machine washable; the Apex and Moment are spot-clean only; Tom Bihn specifies hand washing; leather requires specialized care. Pick the care routine you will actually follow, especially if the tote regularly carries food or cosmetics.
Which bag fits your use case?
- 16-inch laptop, rain and rolling luggage: Troubadour Apex.
- Maximum organization or camera accessories: Moment Everything Travel Tote.
- Luxury leather with modular add-ons: Cuyana System Tote.
- Formal 15-inch office setup: Leatherology Alex, if the sleeve fits without your case.
- 13-inch laptop and deliberately light load: Tom Bihn Nomad 11.
- Lowest price and machine washing: Baggu, paired with a padded sleeve.
Luggage sleeves and travel practicality
A pass-through is useful at airports and during train-to-walking commutes because it lets the tote ride on a suitcase handle. WIRED credits the Troubadour, Leatherology and Tom Bihn models with this feature and specifically notes that the Moment lacks one. Confirm that the sleeve accommodates your suitcase handle width; a rear pocket is not automatically a trolley sleeve.
Products still awaiting documented testing
WIRED says it plans to test the North Face Base Camp Voyager Tote, Quince Weatherproof Utility Tote, Bellroy Tokyo Tote, Timbuk2 Scholar Convertible Tote Backpack, Tomtoc Versatile-T23, Osprey Daylite Tote Pack and Herschel Kaslo Tech Tote. They are alternatives to watch, not tested winners in the February 2026 guide. WIRED’s published methodology describes loading bags with laptops, books, groceries and gym gear and exposing them to Portland rain, Chicago snow and New York heat, but does not provide a standardized table for strap width, bottom-padding depth, fixed-walk comfort or water-test results.
Bottom line
Buy the Troubadour Apex if you want the broadest combination of 16-inch protection, weather features, organization and suitcase compatibility. Choose Moment for the most useful built-in organization, Cuyana or Leatherology for leather, Tom Bihn for a deliberately compact 13-inch load, and Baggu only when low cost and washability outweigh built-in laptop protection.
