Yes, but the headline is outdated. OpenAI announced on May 21, 2025, that it would acquire io Products, a hardware company associated with former Apple design chief Jony Ive. The transaction was widely reported at approximately $6.5 billion, structured as an all-equity deal, and was reported completed in July 2025. The resulting AI hardware project remains unreleased: there is no confirmed retail device, price, launch date, final product name or complete specification.

OpenAI’s announcement is available at OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Jony Ive statement. The reported valuation and transaction structure were covered by Axios and Investing.com.

What OpenAI actually bought

The acquired company was io Products, Inc., a product-and-engineering venture built around Apple veterans. OpenAI described the transaction as bringing io’s team and work into OpenAI, rather than buying a finished consumer-electronics business with a product already on store shelves.

LoveFrom, Ive’s independent design firm, is a separate entity. OpenAI said Ive and LoveFrom would take on broad design and creative responsibilities across OpenAI. That is a continuing design relationship, not simply the purchase of LoveFrom as an OpenAI subsidiary.

The principal Apple-connected figures associated with io included:

  • Jony Ive, Apple’s former chief design officer;
  • Scott Cannon;
  • Tang Tan, a former Apple product-design leader who later became OpenAI’s chief hardware officer; and
  • Evans Hankey, who succeeded Ive as Apple’s design leader before leaving the company.

Those founders and senior staff matter because the practical value of the deal is not just Ive’s public profile. It is also the product-design, engineering and development experience attached to the team. Founder and personnel reporting is detailed by TechCrunch and The Guardian.

How much was the deal worth?

News reports valued the acquisition at approximately $6.5 billion. That figure should not be read as a $6.5 billion cash purchase price. Reports described an all-equity transaction, with OpenAI issuing roughly $5 billion in stock for the remaining io stake after previously investing in the company.

Element What is established
Headline valuation Approximately $6.5 billion, according to media reports
Consideration Reported as equity rather than a conventional cash payment
Remaining stake Reports said about $5 billion in OpenAI stock was issued
Public financial detail No disclosed conventional cash price, revenue multiple or audited valuation rationale

For a personal investor, the distinction is important: a reported valuation for an equity transaction is not the same as money paid to founders or a measure of revenue from a shipped product. See the transaction coverage from Axios and Investing.com.

Why OpenAI is moving into hardware

OpenAI’s strategic argument is that increasingly capable AI may need a new computing interface. Today, ChatGPT-like services are largely delivered through smartphones, browsers and operating systems controlled by Apple, Google, Microsoft and other platforms.

Owning hardware could give OpenAI more control over how people access its services. A purpose-built device might be designed around voice, context, sensors and persistent assistance instead of adapting an AI system to smartphone conventions. It could also reduce OpenAI’s dependence on app-store distribution and the rules of mobile-platform owners.

That is a strategic thesis, not proof that OpenAI has solved manufacturing, reliability, privacy, distribution or cost. OpenAI’s rationale and Ive’s role are set out in the company’s announcement; analysis of the hardware bet appears in Axios.

What device is OpenAI developing?

The public record supports an active hardware program and prototypes, but not a finished product. OpenAI and Ive described work on a new generation of AI devices, and OpenAI said Ive had experienced a prototype and was enthusiastic about it.

Court filings and subsequent reporting discussed multiple concepts, including desktop, portable, wearable, wired and wireless ideas. Those concepts show the range of designs considered; they do not establish which form factor OpenAI selected.

Why the “io” name became a problem

The hardware venture’s name became entangled in litigation with iyO, an audio-device company. IyO sued OpenAI, io Products, Sam Altman and Jony Ive over trademark-related claims; the dispute later included allegations concerning trade secrets. The case record is available through the U.S. District Court docket.

OpenAI removed or changed promotional material associated with the io branding. Reporting later indicated that OpenAI did not plan to use “io” as the hardware product name. In July 2026, the parties reportedly sought a pause while pursuing a settlement in principle. That should be treated as pending unless a court filing confirms a final settlement and dismissal. The branding developments were reported by WIRED and 9to5Mac.

Apple’s separate trade-secret lawsuit

In July 2026, Apple sued OpenAI, two former Apple employees and entities connected with the hardware effort. Apple alleged trade-secret misappropriation and breach of contract related to recruiting and the hardware program. Jony Ive was not reported as a named defendant.

These are allegations, not findings. OpenAI denied having an interest in other companies’ trade secrets and challenged Apple’s claims. OpenAI moved to dismiss in August 2026, while Apple sought preliminary relief and additional discovery. The case could affect hiring, evidence preservation, development schedules and public confidence, but the lawsuit alone does not establish that the acquisition was improper or that the product has been canceled. Procedural reporting is available from The Associated Press and Axios.

What the acquisition does—and does not—prove

It does show a serious hardware bet

OpenAI committed substantial equity value and absorbed a team with high-end consumer-product experience. The company is trying to control more of the interface through which people use AI, rather than remaining solely an application inside someone else’s ecosystem.

It does not show a successful consumer product

No cited source establishes a shipped device, customer adoption, battery performance, privacy model, manufacturing scale or commercial return. A celebrated designer and former Apple employees cannot by themselves prove that a new AI device will be more useful than a smartphone, earbuds, smart speaker or existing ChatGPT applications.

It does not establish an iPhone replacement

The final form factor and use case remain undisclosed. Calling the project an iPhone killer, pendant, pin, speaker or robot goes beyond the evidence.

How to evaluate the deal as an investor or technology follower

  • Separate milestones: announcement occurred in May 2025; completion was reported in July 2025; development is ongoing; shipping has not been established.
  • Read the valuation correctly: approximately $6.5 billion refers to a reported equity valuation, not a confirmed cash outlay.
  • Watch the economics: the eventual business must support hardware, subscriptions or platform revenue sufficient to justify the investment.
  • Watch reliability and privacy: an AI device acting on a user’s behalf would raise questions about mistaken actions, microphones, cameras, location, contacts, persistent context and where data is processed.
  • Keep the legal cases separate: the iyO dispute concerns branding and related allegations; Apple’s case concerns alleged trade secrets and recruiting conduct.
  • Look for first-party evidence: a product name, specifications, price, launch date and sales channel should come from a current OpenAI announcement before being treated as facts.

The Bottom Line

OpenAI did acquire Jony Ive’s io Products venture in a transaction reported at about $6.5 billion, but this is a hardware bet—not a completed consumer-product success story. The device remains unreleased, its specifications and launch are unconfirmed, the “io” name is under legal pressure, and Apple’s separate lawsuit is unresolved.
