Short answer: If your Windows 10 PC passes Microsoft’s Windows 11 check, upgrade after backing up and testing your applications. If it is reliable but cannot move yet, Extended Security Updates (ESU) can provide a temporary security bridge. If the processor is unsupported, the hardware is failing, or ongoing costs exceed its value, replace the computer. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the PC will still run, but ordinary operating-system security and feature updates have stopped.
What ended on October 14, 2025
Microsoft ended normal Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. That means no further regular feature updates, security fixes, product improvements, or technical support for ordinary installations. See Microsoft’s notice at Microsoft Support.
Your computer does not stop working. Existing programs generally continue to launch, but newly discovered operating-system vulnerabilities may remain unpatched. Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 are scheduled to receive security updates through October 10, 2028, and Defender security-intelligence updates continue for a limited period; neither makes Windows 10 itself supported. Browser and application vendors set their own schedules, while hardware warranties and manufacturer support are separate matters.
This article focuses on ordinary Windows 10 version 22H2 Home and Pro PCs. Enterprise, Education, LTSC, embedded, and other specialized editions can have different lifecycle rules; check Microsoft’s lifecycle announcement and lifecycle FAQ.

First, identify your version and edition
- Press Windows key + R, type
winver, and press Enter. - Record the version (ordinary eligible PCs should show 22H2), build number, and edition.
- Alternatively open Start > Settings > System > About and read Windows specifications.
- Install every available Windows 10 update before checking eligibility or enrolling in ESU.
Check whether the PC officially qualifies for Windows 11
Download Microsoft’s PC Health Check rather than judging by age, RAM, or an SSD alone. Windows 11 requires, among other things, a compatible 64-bit processor (1 GHz or faster, at least two cores), 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12/WDDM 2.0 graphics, and a display larger than 9 inches at 720p or above. The processor must also appear on Microsoft’s supported list; meeting the numerical minimums is not enough. Full requirements are at Microsoft Learn.
A failed check may be a disabled setting
Run tpm.msc and verify the TPM specification is 2.0. Run msinfo32 and inspect BIOS Mode (ideally UEFI) and Secure Boot State. Firmware may label TPM as Intel PTT or AMD fTPM. Enabling settings or converting a legacy BIOS/MBR installation can cause boot or encryption problems. Back up files, locate the BitLocker recovery key, and follow your manufacturer’s instructions; these changes are not universally available or safe.

Option 1: Upgrade an eligible PC
- Create a separate backup of important files, and confirm you can restore at least one file.
- Verify Windows is activated, fully updated, and has adequate free storage.
- Run PC Health Check and resolve driver, firmware, encryption, or application warnings.
- Inventory VPNs, endpoint security, accounting software, printers, scanners, smart-card readers, and custom drivers; confirm vendor support.
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and use the Windows 11 offer when Microsoft presents it.
- Keep a laptop connected to power. After installation, run Windows Update again and test peripherals, business applications, activation, and security software.
The upgrade is described by Microsoft as free for eligible activated Windows 10 devices, but eligibility, edition, region, and current upgrade policy determine whether it is offered. If Windows Update has not offered it, pending updates, compatibility holds, managed-device policy, storage, drivers, or activation may be responsible. Use Microsoft’s official installation tools only after checking compatibility and backing up.
Option 2: Use consumer ESU as a bridge
Microsoft’s current consumer ESU page says eligible Windows 10 22H2 devices can receive critical and important security updates through October 12, 2027. An older Microsoft page still displays October 13, 2026, so rely on the current ESU page and verify the date and offer shown for your region. ESU does not provide feature updates, general bug fixes, enhancements, or technical support.

U.S. consumer choices

Microsoft’s regional information says ESU can stop after a period of up to 60 days if the enrolled PC is no longer signed in with the relevant account; see the regional page. A paid route may suit someone who wants to keep using a local Windows account, but account access is still needed for purchase.
How to enroll
- On a patched 22H2 PC, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select the ESU enrollment control (for example, Enroll now).
- Sign in with a Microsoft account and choose the available no-cost, Rewards, or paid option.
- Confirm enrollment, then return to Windows Update and check for updates.
If the offer is missing, confirm 22H2, install current servicing and cumulative updates, check edition and region, use the correct account, and determine whether the machine is organization-managed. Never buy an ESU key from an unverified marketplace.

Consumer ESU is not commercial ESU
Consumer ESU is not for company or school fleets. Organizations must use commercial or education licensing, generally through a Microsoft agreement, Cloud Solution Provider, or authorized partner. Commercial ESU can extend security updates for up to three years after end of support, subject to edition, region, agreement, and licensing terms; pricing is not the consumer $30. Replacement is usually the better financial and security decision when the processor is unsupported, TPM 2.0 or UEFI/Secure Boot cannot be provided, the machine has a failing drive, battery, cooling system, or frequent crashes, or it is too slow for current work. ESU cannot repair hardware, improve performance, or provide modern manufacturer drivers. Include ESU fees, repairs, downtime, and migration effort when comparing costs.

- Web and office: a mainstream supported Windows 11 laptop or mini-PC.
- Business: business-class hardware with warranty response, docking, repairability, TPM 2.0, and Windows Pro where required.
- Creative work: enough RAM, GPU capability, display quality, and fast storage for the workload.
- Legacy software: test the application on Windows 11 before replacing an entire fleet.
- Kiosk or industrial use: investigate vendor-supported LTSC, IoT, or appliance options; do not install consumer LTSC as a workaround.
Choose a supported configuration and current warranty. A refurbished business-class PC can be better value than a new entry-level model, but verify battery health, condition, warranty, and Windows licensing. Official manufacturer destinations include Surface, Dell, Lenovo ThinkPad, and HP.
Do not treat unsupported Windows 11 installation as an equal option
Registry edits and installer bypasses can produce an installation Microsoft does not support, with uncertain updates, driver failures, and no dependable future feature-upgrade path. They are unsuitable for ordinary users and business-critical machines. If the processor is unsupported, choose temporary ESU or replacement instead.
Business and school migration
Inventory hardware, editions, applications, warranties, and encryption status. Pilot Windows 11 with line-of-business software, VPN, endpoint protection, printers, scanners, and licensing activation before broad deployment. Use commercial ESU only to buy controlled transition time and set a replacement deadline. Intune (Microsoft Intune) can inventory and manage devices; Windows Autopatch (overview) helps organizations with appropriate Microsoft 365 licensing. Windows 365 (Cloud PCs) may fit managed remote work, but requires reliable internet and recurring subscriptions.

Protect your data during the change
- Keep a separate backup; cloud synchronization alone is not a complete backup.
- Confirm password-manager and browser-password synchronization, and export email archives when applicable.
- Record application installers, license details, recovery media, and the BitLocker recovery key.
- Before firmware or partition changes, suspend BitLocker as instructed and ensure you can restore boot settings.
- If an upgrade rolls back, disconnect unnecessary USB devices, free storage, update firmware and critical drivers, and inspect setup logs rather than repeatedly retrying. If applications fail afterward, use vendor installers and the prepared rollback, image, or backup plan.
The Bottom Line
Use the supported path: upgrade an eligible, reliable PC; enroll an otherwise usable 22H2 machine in the appropriate ESU program only to gain transition time; replace hardware that is unsupported, failing, or uneconomic to keep. Consumer ESU is security-only and time-limited, not a return to full Windows 10 support.
