You can still solo stake Ethereum after The Merge. The transition moved Ethereum from proof of work to proof of stake; it did not remove the 32 ETH requirement or the need to run validator software yourself. A solo staker operates both an execution-layer client and a consensus-layer client, controls the validator keys, and maintains the hardware and connection that keep the validator online.
What “after The Merge” means for solo staking
The Merge created Ethereum’s proof-of-stake era. Ethereum now operates as one network with an execution layer and a consensus layer working together, rather than as two separate Ethereum networks. Solo staking means running clients for both layers and depositing stake through the official process described in the Ethereum.org solo-staking guide.
The Merge changed how blocks are agreed on; it did not turn solo staking into a custodial or cloud-only service. You remain responsible for the validator keys, uptime, security and maintenance.
What you need to run an Ethereum validator
At least 32 ETH
A validator requires a minimum deposit of 32 ETH, according to Ethereum.org’s current solo-staking documentation. Under current compounding rules, one validator can hold up to 2048 ETH. The 32 ETH is protocol stake, not a software fee, and its value in dollars will change with the ETH market price.

An always-on computer and reliable network
Your host must continuously run execution and consensus databases and validator software. Plan for:
- Sufficient CPU and memory for the clients you choose.
- Fast, dependable storage with room for database growth.
- A stable internet connection with dependable upload and download service.
- Secure administration, restricted access and strong authentication.
- Backups for configuration and credential material, stored offline where appropriate.
- Monitoring and alerts so you learn about missed duties or connectivity problems quickly.
- Optional backup power if local outages are common.
Ethereum.org provides the current hardware, uptime and maintenance guidance at https://ethereum.org/staking/solo/. Hardware examples are categories, not a single required computer model; client requirements and database sizes change as the network and software change.
Execution, consensus and validator software
You must synchronize one execution-layer client and one consensus-layer client, then run validator software with your keys loaded. The clients must be configured to communicate correctly, remain synchronized and stay updated as Ethereum protocol releases require.

Validator and withdrawal credentials
Use the official Ethereum Staking Launchpad workflow to generate signing credentials and deposit data. Protect signing-key backups offline. Check the withdrawal address character by character before submitting it: the registered address controls where protocol withdrawals are sent, and a mistaken address may not be recoverable. The Launchpad’s current validator guidance is at https://launchpad.ethereum.org/en/faq.

- Read the official guidance. Review the current solo-staking requirements and decide whether you can operate an internet-connected system continuously, handle updates and recover from failures.
- Prepare and secure the host. Install a supported operating system, provide adequate storage, secure remote administration, configure backups and arrange reliable networking and, if useful, backup power.
- Install and synchronize both clients. Choose a compatible execution client and consensus client, install them, and wait for each database to synchronize. A validator cannot perform duties reliably while either client is out of sync.
- Generate keys and deposit data. Create validator signing credentials and withdrawal credentials through the Ethereum Staking Launchpad. Verify the withdrawal address and keep encrypted offline backups of the recovery material.
- Deposit at least 32 ETH. Submit the Launchpad-generated deposit transaction from the wallet you control. The validator then waits in Ethereum’s activation queue; the waiting period is not a fixed number supplied by the protocol documentation here.
- Load the validator keys. Import the signing keys into validator software only on the secured host. Confirm that the validator connects to both clients and begins reporting duties.
- Monitor and maintain it. Set alerts for missed attestations, client errors, disk capacity, synchronization lag and loss of connectivity. Apply operating-system and client updates carefully, watch storage growth and periodically rehearse restoration from backups.
Rewards, missed duties and slashing
What earns rewards
Validators receive rewards for correctly performing consensus duties and may also receive execution-layer rewards. These are staking rewards produced by protocol participation; they are separate from any gain or loss caused by the market price of ETH.
What happens when the validator is offline
Missing duties reduces rewards. A prolonged outage can therefore turn a potentially earning validator into an operating cost, but an ordinary connectivity or power outage is not the same as slashing.

When slashing is possible
Slashing is reserved for malicious or conflicting protocol behavior, such as signing incompatible messages. It is more serious than simply being offline because it can impose penalties and end the validator’s ability to continue normally. Avoid running the same signing keys on two active machines unless your setup explicitly prevents conflicting signatures. Review the current operational warnings in the Ethereum.org solo-staking documentation.
How staking withdrawals and exits work
Withdrawals were enabled by the Shanghai/Capella upgrades. A validator must have a withdrawal address. The credential type determines how rewards are handled:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Credential type | Reward behavior | What you can withdraw |
|---|---|---|
| Type 1 | Rewards above 32 ETH are automatically swept to the registered withdrawal address. | The swept excess, subject to the protocol’s withdrawal process. |
| Type 2 | Rewards compound automatically in the validator balance up to the current 2048 ETH maximum per validator. | Amounts above the normal operating balance through the supported withdrawal process. |
The Ethereum Staking Launchpad states that an exit becomes withdrawable after 256 epochs, approximately 27.3 hours, under its current validator FAQ. This timing is for the exit-to-withdrawable stage; queueing and later processing can add other waits. Read the current details at https://launchpad.ethereum.org/en/faq and https://launchpad.ethereum.org/withdrawals.

Exiting is different from withdrawing a reward. Once the exit process completes, the validator stops performing duties and no longer earns future validator rewards. Confirm the destination address and the consequences of exit before signing an exit message.

Solo staking gives you direct control, but it also makes you the operator. The main responsibilities are:
- Key security: A lost or stolen signing key can compromise control of the validator. Keep backups protected and do not expose private material to remote services unnecessarily.
- Uptime: Power, router, ISP or hardware failures can cause missed duties and lower rewards.
- Client maintenance: Updates may be required for protocol upgrades. Delayed or incompatible updates can cause downtime.
- Storage capacity: Execution and consensus databases grow; a full disk can stop a client and the validator.
- Incident recovery: You need a documented, tested process for restoring the host, clients and keys without creating duplicate signing activity.
- Market risk: Staking rewards do not protect the market value of the ETH you deposit.
Operating your own hardware avoids handing validator keys to a staking provider, but it does not eliminate technical or financial risk. Ethereum.org’s current operating guidance is available at https://ethereum.org/staking/solo/.

Solo staking compared with pooled or delegated staking
Evaluate the choice across custody, capital, operations and liquidity rather than comparing headline reward rates alone.
| Factor | Solo staking | Pooled or delegated staking |
|---|---|---|
| Key custody | You generate and protect the validator keys. | A provider or protocol may hold, control or abstract key operations; terms vary. |
| Minimum capital | At least 32 ETH for one validator. | Provider-specific; the minimum is not stated in the cited Ethereum solo-staking guidance. |
| Hardware and maintenance | You supply the always-on host, storage, network, updates and recovery. | The provider generally handles infrastructure; review its operational model. |
| Uptime responsibility | yours; missed duties reduce your rewards. | Usually delegated to the provider, subject to its service performance and terms. |
| Liquidity | ETH remains subject to validator withdrawal and exit procedures rather than instant access. | Liquidity depends on the service or token structure; it is not established by the cited sources. |
| Fees | No staking-service fee is described; you bear hardware, power and connectivity costs. | Fee structure varies by provider and is not stated here. |
| Smart-contract exposure | The described workflow does not require a pooling smart contract. | Some services add protocol or smart-contract risk; assess the specific design. |
| Counterparty trust | No staking operator is required, so you retain direct operational control. | You must trust the provider, delegated operator or smart-contract system. |
Who should solo stake?
Solo staking fits someone who has the required ETH, wants direct protocol participation and is prepared to treat the validator as a continuously operated system rather than a passive investment. If maintaining secure hardware, monitoring alerts, applying updates and recovering from incidents is not practical for you, a pooled or delegated arrangement may better match your constraints—but it introduces provider, contract or counterparty considerations that must be evaluated separately.
