Re:

Fido quietly retired its legacy home internet—but it still shows 5G service in 2026

Fido’s old cable internet service was quietly phased out, but Fido still markets Rogers-powered 5G Home Internet. Here is the timeline and what former customers should compare.

Short answer: Fido stopped selling new customers its traditional cable-based Home Internet plans by October 1, 2023. Existing subscribers were moved to Rogers service, with customer notices saying Fido Home Internet would no longer be available after May 6, 2024. But Fido did not abandon every home-internet option: its current site markets Rogers-powered 5G Home Internet and Rogers Xfinity plans.

What Fido actually discontinued

The retired product was Fido’s legacy fixed broadband service delivered over the Rogers cable network. This was a product-line and brand consolidation, not a nationwide disappearance of internet connectivity.

Fido support pages still contain legacy references to usage alerts, moving service and modem returns. Those pages describe the remaining customer base and support process; they do not prove that the old cable plans are open to new sign-ups. Fido says its home-internet lineup transitioned to Rogers, where new plans are available (Fido support).

The timeline resolves the apparent contradiction

Date What it represents
October 1, 2023 Rogers’ 2024 annual report says it stopped selling new Fido Internet plans and removed those subscribers from its reported retail-internet base (Rogers 2024 Annual Report).
May 6, 2024 Customer notices reproduced on Fido’s community forum said Fido Home Internet would no longer be available and customers would move to Rogers Ignite/Xfinity service (forum notice).
April 1, 2025 Rogers reported that the migration was complete for accounting purposes and added 122,000 customer relationships and 124,000 retail Internet subscribers to its totals (Rogers 2025 Annual Report).

These dates describe different stages: sales stopped first, customers were then transitioned, and Rogers later reflected the migrated accounts in its reporting. The filings do not establish one simultaneous nationwide disconnection date.

What happened to former Fido Internet customers?

Customers were directed to Rogers-branded service, generally Ignite/Xfinity Internet, with Rogers equipment. A notice’s “faster speeds” or “same price” positioning should not be treated as a guarantee that every customer received identical billing. Address-level availability, speed tier, discounts, equipment charges, taxes and promotional expiry could differ.

Fido’s equipment guidance says customers who migrated to Rogers Xfinity Internet or cancelled generally do not need to return the old modem; they should recycle it according to local rules (Fido equipment guidance). Anyone still seeing a Fido Internet charge should verify the migration status with support rather than assume the old plan is still accepting changes.

Why the withdrawal attracted so little attention

  • Fido appears to have stopped acquisition quietly instead of staging a major public shutdown campaign.
  • Existing subscribers were contacted individually through notices and account support.
  • The underlying Rogers network relationship continued, so the change looked like a brand transfer.
  • Fido is primarily identified with mobile service, making its smaller broadband product less visible.
  • Rogers described much of the change in financial-reporting language rather than as a consumer event.
  • Phasing out new sales before migrating existing accounts made the process resemble ordinary plan churn.

“No one noticed” is therefore a useful description of the rollout’s low visibility, not a measurable claim that literally nobody saw it.

The accounting clue—and what the numbers do not prove

Rogers’ 2024 filing says Fido Internet subscribers were removed from the reported base after new-plan sales stopped. Its 2025 filing later added 124,000 retail Internet subscribers and 122,000 customer relationships after migration. Those are reporting categories, not a precise count of every person who received a particular email or experienced service ending on the same day.

Does Fido still offer home internet in 2026?

Yes, but it is not the old cable product. Fido’s current internet page presents 5G Home Internet, 5G Backup Home Internet and links to Rogers Xfinity options (Fido Internet). The legal description identifies the 5G service as Rogers 5G Home Internet using Rogers coverage. “Fido-marketed” or “available through Fido’s website” is more accurate than calling it a separate Fido network.

How the current 5G plan works

  • The listed plan provides up to 100 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload within a 500 GB high-speed allowance.
  • After 500 GB, speeds may be reduced to up to 10 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload.
  • Video streaming may be limited to 3 Mbps per stream.
  • Performance varies with placement, signal, building materials, coverage, congestion and network-management practices.
  • The device is restricted to the fixed service address and may use LTE where 5G is unavailable.
  • After cancellation, the device must be returned within 30 days or a $200 charge may apply. Cancelling within the first 30 days qualifies for a monthly-fee refund under the stated terms.

That makes the service a wireless fixed-location connection—not a like-for-like replacement for unlimited wired cable or fibre.

Choosing a replacement: compare the technology, not just the brand

Option Best fit Main cautions
Rogers Xfinity wired internet Closest technical replacement for legacy Fido cable service Address-specific pricing, upload speeds, fees and promotions
Rogers/Fido 5G Home Internet No-term, plug-and-play service or backup where wired service is unavailable 500 GB high-speed allowance, throttling, variable wireless performance and fixed-address use
Independent cable or fibre provider Potentially better pricing or terms on the local network Availability and service quality depend on address and underlying network
Rural fixed-wireless or satellite Homes without reliable wired infrastructure Latency, data policies and weather or signal limitations vary

Check address-level options from Rogers, Rogers 5G Home Internet, Bell, TELUS, TekSavvy and oxio. Prices, technology and promotions can change by province and service address.

Checklist for affected customers

  1. Locate the Fido migration email or Rogers account notice.
  2. Compare the full monthly bill after any promotion ends, including equipment fees and taxes.
  3. Check both download and upload speeds, data allowances and throttling rules.
  4. Confirm installation, contract, cancellation and equipment-return requirements.
  5. If considering 5G, verify signal at the installation location and whether household usage could exceed 500 GB.
  6. Compare independent providers before accepting the first Rogers offer.

The Bottom Line

Fido did quietly retire its legacy cable home-internet business. The accurate 2026 description is narrower: the old Fido broadband brand was consolidated into Rogers, while Rogers-powered 5G Home Internet remains visible through Fido’s site.
