Jeffrey Bowie, reported as the CEO of Oklahoma cybersecurity company Veritaco, was arrested after authorities accused him of accessing computers at SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City and installing screen-capturing malware. The alleged hospital incident occurred on August 6, 2024; reports say Oklahoma City police arrested Bowie on April 14, 2025. SSM Health said no patient information was accessed. Bowie has been charged, not convicted, and no final case disposition was confirmed in the available reporting reviewed through August 18, 2026.
What happened?
Published reports describe an alleged physically enabled intrusion rather than a purely remote cyberattack. Hospital staff reportedly saw an unauthorized man using a computer reserved for employees. He allegedly said a family member was undergoing surgery and that he needed to use a computer. Security footage reportedly showed attempts to access computers in multiple offices.
Reports say Bowie accessed two computers. A forensic examination found malicious software on at least one employee-designated computer. The program was allegedly configured to capture screenshots periodically and send them to an external IP address.
The available accounts do not establish the motive. They do not show that the incident involved ransomware, extortion, espionage, or an attempt to steal medical records.

Timeline
| Date | Reported event |
|---|---|
| August 6, 2024 | Hospital staff noticed the unauthorized computer use; reports say two computers were accessed and malware was later found on at least one. |
| After the incident | Hospital personnel and security reviewed the activity, conducted forensic work, and notified law enforcement. |
| April 14, 2025 | Oklahoma City police reportedly arrested Bowie after an arrest warrant was issued. |
| April 18 and 22, 2025 | The HIPAA Journal and Cybernews published accounts of the arrest and allegations. |
| As of August 18, 2026 | No reliable source reviewed confirmed a conviction, dismissal, plea, trial result, or sentence. |
The roughly eight-month interval between the alleged incident and reported arrest is important: the arrest was not made at the hospital on the day of the alleged access.
What the malware allegedly did
The central technical allegation is screen capture followed by external transmission. That could expose anything visible on a workstation, including operational or health-related information, but the public reports do not establish that sensitive information was actually captured or successfully transmitted.
Published accounts conflict on the capture interval. Cybernews reported screenshots every 20 minutes, while The HIPAA Journal reported every 20 seconds. Reports therefore agree on recurring screenshot capture and attempted external delivery, but not on the frequency.

It is also important to distinguish the two computers reportedly accessed from the one employee computer on which malware was identified. The available reporting does not say that both computers were infected.
Was patient information exposed?
SSM Health said no patient information was accessed, and The HIPAA Journal reported that rapid detection prevented a data breach. That is the hospital’s stated outcome in the available coverage.
The precise distinction is:
- Reported allegation: unauthorized computer access and installation of malicious software.
- Potential risk: a screenshot tool could disclose information displayed on a computer.
- Publicly reported result: SSM Health said patient information was not accessed.
- Not established: whether any screenshot was successfully transmitted, what appeared on captured screens, or whether a regulator made a formal breach determination.
Calling the event a confirmed patient-data breach would go beyond the available evidence.

How the hospital detected the activity
The reported response combined physical and technical controls rather than relying on antivirus software alone:
- An employee noticed an unauthorized person using an employee workstation.
- Security-camera footage helped document movement through offices and attempted computer access.
- Forensic review identified malicious software on an employee-designated computer.
- Hospital personnel and security escalated the incident to law enforcement.
This layered detection is significant for hospitals. A person who can physically reach an unlocked workstation may bypass some remote defenses, while cameras, staff intervention, endpoint analysis, and network review can provide different pieces of the same investigation.
Who was arrested and what are the charges?
Reports identify the accused as Jeffrey Bowie and describe him as CEO of Veritaco, an Edmond, Oklahoma-based cybersecurity, digital-forensics, and private-intelligence firm. That title comes from published reporting; it does not mean he worked for the hospital.

Authorities reportedly charged Bowie with two counts under Oklahoma’s Computer Crimes Act. The available reports do not consistently identify the precise statutory subsections or provide a charging document that can be confidently matched to the case. “Charged” and “arrested” are procedural descriptions, not findings of guilt.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What penalties were reported?
Cybernews described possible Oklahoma penalties in broad terms:
| Possible classification reported | Reported maximum or range | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Misdemeanor conviction | Fine up to $5,000 and up to 30 days’ imprisonment | A reported statutory possibility, not Bowie’s sentence. |
| Felony conviction | Fine as high as $100,000 and imprisonment from one to 10 years | The eventual classification, applicable subsection, and sentence would depend on the charging documents and court outcome. |
These figures should not be read as proof that Bowie faced felony counts or that any particular penalty was imposed. The current statute and case documents would control.

What remains unknown
- The exact Oklahoma statutory subsections cited in the charges.
- Whether the screenshot program successfully transmitted images, rather than merely being configured to do so.
- Whether any patient or other sensitive information appeared in a captured image.
- Bowie’s stated defense, motive, or explanation.
- Whether federal agencies played a role; claims of FBI involvement were not confirmed by the strongest material reviewed.
- The case’s final disposition as of the latest reviewed reporting.
Oklahoma’s court systems provide public search tools, including the court docket results page, electronic case-filing search, and Oklahoma State Courts Network docket search. A docket entry, if available, should be checked before treating the arrest reports as a current statement of the prosecution.
Why the case matters to hospitals
The incident illustrates a trusted-access failure and physical-security risk, not evidence of a sector-wide trend. A visitor reportedly moved through a hospital and reached employee computers, creating an opportunity for malicious software to be installed without first defeating a remote perimeter.
Hospitals can reduce similar exposure by:
- Locking workstations and enforcing short automatic-logoff periods.
- Restricting visitor movement and keeping employee-only computers out of public areas.
- Using endpoint controls to block unauthorized software and monitoring unusual outbound connections.
- Training staff to challenge or report suspicious computer use through a safe escalation process.
- Preserving camera footage, system logs, disk images, and other evidence when an incident is suspected.
- Reviewing vendor, contractor, and temporary-user privileges rather than assuming technical expertise implies authorization.
- Maintaining an incident-response plan that links facilities security, IT, privacy, legal, and law-enforcement contacts.
Confirmed, alleged, and unknown
| Status | What the public record supports |
|---|---|
| Reported or established by the coverage | Bowie was arrested; reports identify him as Veritaco’s CEO; hospital forensics reportedly found malware on at least one employee computer; two Oklahoma Computer Crimes Act counts were reported. |
| Alleged | Unauthorized access, installation of the software, screenshot capture, and external transmission. |
| Hospital’s stated outcome | No patient information was accessed. |
| Not verified | Conviction, sentence, final dismissal or plea, successful screenshot exfiltration, motive, and any confirmed federal investigation. |
The most accurate description is therefore an alleged unauthorized-access and malware-installation incident at a hospital, followed by an arrest and criminal charges—not a proven hacking conviction or confirmed patient-record theft.
