Two Ways to Get a Free iPhone 16 Pro Without a Trade-In—But the Offers May Be Gone

The no-trade-in iPhone 16 Pro offers from Verizon and Boost were bill-credit promotions tied to wireless plans—not free phones with no commitment. Here is what the historical terms required and why they are not confirmed in 2026.

Update: Verizon and Boost Mobile promotions described in a December 20, 2024 Laptop Mag article were real carrier offers, but neither original iPhone 16 Pro deal is confirmed as active in 2026. Treat the details below as historical terms, not a current quote. Before signing up, check the carrier’s live checkout page and promotion terms.

The key distinction is that “free” meant monthly bill credits after financing the phone. You still paid for wireless service, taxes and fees, and you could lose future credits if you canceled or changed plans.

The two historical no-trade-in offers

Carrier Historical requirement Advertised device-credit period Advertised service price
Verizon New line on Unlimited Ultimate; no trade-in 36 months $100 monthly, or $90 with AutoPay
Boost Mobile Boost Infinite Access activation; no trade-in Not clearly established in the original coverage; the plan used a device-access model $65 monthly

Those figures come from the historical coverage published by Laptop Mag on December 20, 2024. They are not current plan quotes.

Verizon: a new line and 36 months of credits

How the offer worked

The reported Verizon promotion applied about $999 of iPhone 16 Pro value through 36 monthly bill credits. No trade-in was required, but the customer had to open a new line on Verizon’s Unlimited Ultimate plan. The article described eligibility for both new and existing Verizon customers; for an existing customer, that meant adding a line rather than simply upgrading an existing line for free.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 16 Pro, 128GB, Black Titanium - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Titanium frame combines strength and lightness, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a premium feel while reducing weight for prolonged daily use. The polished edges and textured back enhance grip and handling, making it easier to use during long calls, gaming sessions, or when capturing photos and videos on the move.

The historical price was $100 per month, or $90 with AutoPay. Over 36 months, that is $3,600 in advertised service charges, or $3,240 at the stated AutoPay price, before taxes, fees, activation, insurance, add-ons or other lines.

What can end the credits

Verizon’s current device-deals guidance says promotional credits can take one or two billing cycles to appear and may stop when a customer changes to an ineligible plan or otherwise fails the promotion’s device-payment or account requirements. A 36-month credit schedule is therefore a commitment to maintain qualifying service, not a promise that the phone remains free after cancellation. See Verizon’s device-deals FAQ.

Boost Mobile: lower advertised service cost, different uncertainties

How the offer was presented

The second route used Boost Infinite Access at a reported $65 per month, with no trade-in. The historical article described unlimited talk, text and data, annual upgrades, global talk and text, and 30GB of premium data. Because the article routed readers through shopping links rather than reproducing complete carrier legal terms, confirm each benefit, eligibility rule, network condition and credit schedule in the live Boost agreement.

At the historical advertised rate, 24 months of service would be $1,560 before taxes and fees if the phone credit followed a 24-month device-access structure. That 24-month assumption is not a verified universal Boost term, so do not treat $1,560 as a guaranteed total.

Who should be cautious

Boost may suit someone comfortable with an MVNO or prepaid-style relationship and interested in annual upgrades. It is a weaker fit if you need a particular roaming arrangement, enterprise support, documented current unlocking terms, or the freedom to buy the phone outright and move it immediately.

“Free” does not mean a $0 purchase

In these promotions, the carrier generally finances the handset, then applies a device credit to each monthly bill. The service bill still arrives, and the credit may not appear until the first or second billing cycle. You remain responsible for taxes, government fees, activation or connection charges, shipping, insurance and any plan or device amount the promotion does not cover.

  • This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
  • Leaving early: canceling a line can stop remaining credits and leave the unpaid device balance due.
  • Changing plans: downgrading from the qualifying plan can invalidate future credits.
  • Paying off early: an early payoff can end promotional credits under the carrier’s terms.
  • New-line cost: an unnecessary line can cost more than the phone’s promotional value.
  • Old-phone financing: no trade-in does not erase an installment balance owed to your previous carrier.

Cost examples before you commit

Historical route Calculation What it excludes
Verizon standard price $100 × 36 = $3,600 Taxes, fees, activation, insurance, add-ons, other lines and early-payoff costs
Verizon with stated AutoPay price $90 × 36 = $3,240 Same exclusions; AutoPay eligibility must continue
Boost illustration $65 × 24 = $1,560, only if a 24-month credit structure applied Taxes, fees and any different current term or device balance

Compare the qualifying plan with what you already pay. If Verizon would add $50 per month to your current service, that difference alone is $1,800 over 36 months—before considering taxes and fees. The cheapest phone promotion is not necessarily the cheapest wireless decision.

Taxes, activation and the first bill

Ask the carrier or read the checkout disclosures whether sales tax is calculated on the iPhone’s full retail price before credits. Also check for a down payment, activation or device-connection fee, shipping, first-month service charges and the date credits begin. Save the promotion ID, plan name, expected credit amount, credit duration, activation date, receipt and installment agreement.

Is the phone unlocked?

The historical article did not establish a universal unlocked-phone guarantee. A device being paid off through credits is not the same as being unlocked. Unlock eligibility can depend on the carrier’s policy, a current account, a paid device balance and a minimum period of active service. Leaving before credits finish can create a remaining balance even if the handset later qualifies for unlocking. Confirm the carrier’s current unlock policy in writing before assuming you can move the phone elsewhere.

Can you keep your existing phone?

Yes, “no trade-in” was the central appeal of both historical offers. You could keep the old handset, but the promotion could still require a new line, a port-in, credit approval or a new account relationship. Any remaining installment balance with the old carrier would normally remain your responsibility.

A later T-Mobile example

On May 15, 2025, T-Mobile announced a separate iPhone 16 Pro promotion that did not require a trade-in. It required the Experience Beyond plan and used 24 monthly bill credits; the announcement also advertised up to $800 toward existing phone balances through a virtual prepaid Mastercard, subject to eligibility and port-in conditions. That was a separate historical promotion, not proof that Verizon, Boost or T-Mobile offers the same terms today. Read the announcement at T-Mobile’s release.

Are the Verizon and Boost offers available now?

They are not confirmed as active. Verizon’s current smartphone-deals page emphasizes newer iPhone promotions and warns that offers can change or end while supplies last: Verizon deals. Current T-Mobile promotional examples for iPhone 16 models show trade-in requirements: T-Mobile promotion details. AT&T’s current free-phone page highlights an iPhone 17 Pro with an eligible iPhone trade-in, not a no-trade-in iPhone 16 Pro: AT&T free phones.

Carriers can also target offers by account, ZIP code, order channel or inventory. An old search result or banner is not enough; complete the carrier’s checkout flow and open the linked legal terms before paying.

Who should consider a deal like this?

Potentially suitable

  • You already want the carrier’s network and premium plan.
  • You can keep the qualifying line for the entire credit period.
  • You do not have a trade-in and value lowering the phone payment more than minimizing service cost.
  • You have confirmed taxes, fees, credit timing and unlock rules.

Usually a poor fit

  • You expect to switch carriers within two or three years.
  • You want an unlocked phone immediately or prefer to buy outright.
  • The required plan costs substantially more than your current service.
  • You would add a line you do not need.
  • You might lose AutoPay eligibility or need to downgrade the plan.

Checklist before ordering

  1. Confirm the exact model and storage tier; the historical Verizon example referred to an approximately $999 128GB iPhone 16 Pro, while higher capacities could cost more.
  2. Verify the current plan name, monthly price, new-line or port-in requirement and credit duration.
  3. Read what happens to credits after cancellation, plan changes, early payoff or a missed payment.
  4. Ask whether tax is charged on the full retail price and list every one-time fee.
  5. Confirm the carrier’s unlock policy and when eligibility begins.
  6. Compare the qualifying service cost with your existing bill and include any old-device payoff.
  7. Save screenshots, the promotion ID and all installment and account documents.

The Bottom Line

The Verizon and Boost Mobile iPhone 16 Pro offers were legitimate historical bill-credit promotions, not instant free phones. They are not confirmed for 2026, and the financial commitment was the qualifying wireless service—36 months for the reported Verizon deal and an unverified device-access term for Boost. Only proceed when the carrier’s live terms show the exact model, credits, fees, plan requirements and cancellation consequences.
