Amazon closed its returns drop-off facility in early July 2024 at the former Amazon Fresh Pickup site near Starbucks’ headquarters in Seattle’s SoDo neighborhood. The grocery-pickup operation had already ended in December 2023. Signs at the shuttered facility directed customers to a Whole Foods Market in West Seattle at the time, but Amazon’s return workflow—not an old sign or location list—determines where an eligible item can be returned today.
GeekWire reported the closure on Aug. 29, 2024, citing Amazon’s confirmation.
What closed, and when
Three related services are easy to confuse:
- Amazon Fresh Pickup: The SoDo grocery-pickup location closed in December 2023.
- Returns drop-off operation: The returns facility in the same building closed in early July 2024.
- Amazon’s broader returns network: It continued operating through participating Whole Foods Market, Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go locations, Amazon Lockers, The UPS Store, Staples, Kohl’s and other partners.
The July event was therefore not Amazon ending returns in Seattle or closing a grocery store at that moment. It was the removal of one local drop-off site.
Where the site was and what customers were told
The facility occupied the bottom floor of a building at or near Starbucks’ Seattle headquarters in SoDo. The available report identifies the neighborhood and the Starbucks-HQ proximity but does not establish a street address.

After the closure, signs directed customers to the nearest Amazon returns location identified in the report as a Whole Foods Market in West Seattle. That was the contemporaneous redirect, not a permanent guarantee that the same store is available for every order in 2026.
How to return an Amazon purchase now
- Open Your Orders on Amazon’s website or in the Amazon Shopping app.
- Select the order and choose Return or replace items.
- Complete the eligibility prompts and select an offered drop-off method and location.
- If Whole Foods Dropoff appears, choose the specific store shown by Amazon.
- Save the generated QR code in the app or confirmation email.
- Take the eligible item and QR code to that store’s customer-service desk, Amazon Counter or designated kiosk.
For eligible Whole Foods returns, Amazon generally says you do not need the original shipping box, tape or a printed label. Packaging, label and fee rules can differ by item and option, so follow the terms displayed for that order. Amazon’s Whole Foods guide and Whole Foods’ instructions describe the process.
Before you leave
- Confirm the selected store and its hours.
- Make sure the QR code is accessible offline or retrieve it from the app or email before reaching the counter.
- Check whether the item requires packaging, a label or a different carrier.
- Do not take a package to the former SoDo site.
Why a Whole Foods option may not appear
Return choices depend on the item, delivery ZIP code, seller and other eligibility rules. Large, heavy, hazardous, restricted or unusually shaped products may have different instructions. If a preferred store is absent, use one of the alternatives Amazon presents rather than assuming any Whole Foods accepts that item. Whole Foods’ return policy explains that eligibility and available services are determined during the return process.

Return center versus drop-off point
In everyday conversation, Amazon may call a customer-facing site a return center. Operationally, a drop-off point is where you hand over the package; Amazon then consolidates eligible returns and sends them to processing facilities. Amazon’s explanation of the return lifecycle describes that downstream handling. The SoDo closure should not be read as the shutdown of a major national processing hub.
Seattle timeline
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| January 2023 | Amazon’s Ballard Fresh Pickup location closed; that site also served as a returns location. |
| December 2023 | The SoDo Amazon Fresh Pickup grocery operation closed. |
| Early July 2024 | The returns facility in the SoDo building closed, according to Amazon’s confirmation reported by GeekWire. |
| Aug. 29, 2024 | GeekWire published its report on the closure. |
GeekWire said Seattle had only two Amazon Fresh Pickup locations: SoDo and Ballard. The history shows how Amazon used some grocery-format sites for multiple services, but it does not establish why the SoDo returns operation ended.
How this fits Amazon’s physical-retail changes
The SoDo shutdown came amid a broader reshaping of Amazon’s physical footprint. GeekWire noted earlier closures of Amazon 4-star, Books and Pop Up stores and reported, citing Business Insider, that Amazon expected to save $1.3 billion over coming years through expiring leases, negotiated early terminations and ending use of some office floors.

Those changes provide context, not a confirmed cause. The available reporting does not say that lease savings specifically drove the SoDo returns closure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the closure means for Seattle customers
Customers should treat the former SoDo facility as permanently unavailable unless Amazon independently announces otherwise. The practical replacement is not one fixed store: Amazon’s account-based return flow assigns an eligible location and method for each item. Amazon’s public guidance lists thousands of potential drop-off points, but counts have varied across pages and publication dates, so a current number would be misleading.
If a return was handed in at the site before it closed and tracking has not updated, avoid guessing about its status. Contact Amazon customer service with the return confirmation, QR-code details and any carrier or tracking information.
