Yes—Shein is available in India again, but the original app blocked in 2020 was not simply restored. In February 2025, Reliance Retail launched a locally operated Shein app and website under a reported licensing and technology arrangement. Reliance runs the Indian customer platform, while Shein contributes brand and technology know-how. The service remained listed and actively updated in 2026.
For shoppers, that means checking the developer name, delivery PIN code, item-level return terms and privacy disclosures before ordering. For investors and retail watchers, the important issue is how Reliance is using a global fast-fashion brand without handing the Indian consumer operation back to Shein’s pre-ban structure.
What happened to Shein in India?
India blocked Shein’s original app in June 2020 as part of a wider action against 59 Chinese apps amid security, sovereignty and data-governance concerns. In early February 2025, Shein returned through a new Indian app and website launched with Reliance Retail. Coverage of the arrangement describes it as a licensing and technology partnership, not a lifting of the old ban.
The relaunch was initially a quiet, limited rollout. Reports said the Indian operation would sell products designed and manufactured locally rather than import Shein’s existing Chinese inventory wholesale. That is a description of the relaunch model, not proof that every current item has the same origin; check product information and company policies for item-specific details.

How the Reliance–Shein arrangement works

It is therefore more accurate to call Shein India Reliance-operated or Reliance-controlled than to say Reliance bought Shein or that Shein owns the Indian app. Reliance’s own retail materials position the service alongside AJIO in its digital-fashion portfolio.

Is this the same app that India banned?
No, not operationally. The current Indian listing is a separate local application. Apple identifies Reliance Retail Private Limited as the developer; Google Play identifies Reliance Retail Ltd. The original globally operated app was not simply unblocked or resumed unchanged.

Where can you shop, and is delivery nationwide?
The app is available through Google Play and the Indian Apple App Store, and shopping is available at sheinindia.in. The initial rollout was reported in major cities including Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Later company materials show growth but do not establish a definitive list of every serviceable Indian PIN code.
Enter your PIN code in the app or website before paying. Do not treat promotional “free shipping” language as a universal promise: eligibility can depend on order value, location and current terms.
For returns, read the item-level and order-level conditions before checkout. Categories may have different rules. Keep the order number, delivery evidence, photographs and support correspondence if a refund or return is disputed.

What data does the Indian app disclose?
Reports on the partnership said Reliance would retain operational control and local data sovereignty. That does not mean the app collects little data or that every processing activity occurs only in India.

Apple states that these privacy disclosures have not been verified by Apple. Distinguish three separate questions: who operates the platform, what the privacy policy says about storage and processing, and what categories of data the app may collect.

Reliance and Shein have also been associated with ambitions to use Indian production for exports to markets such as the United States and United Kingdom. That is a reported objective, not evidence that a large-scale export programme is already operating.

Why did both companies pursue the deal?
Shein’s incentive
- Reach India’s large, mobile-first fashion market.
- Use Reliance’s local logistics, compliance, retail and manufacturing infrastructure.
- Re-enter a market where the original app faced political and regulatory barriers.
- Potentially develop Indian supply capacity for exports.
Reliance’s incentive
- Add a globally recognised, high-engagement fast-fashion brand to its digital portfolio.
- Broaden fashion traffic and catalogue depth alongside AJIO.
- Connect Indian manufacturing with international fashion demand.
Reliance describes Shein as complementary to AJIO rather than a replacement. Whether the two brands expand the overall customer base or cannibalise one another remains an open market question.

What remains unknown?
- The licence fee, revenue split and any equity or control rights beyond the reported structure.
- Active users, order volume, revenue, repeat-purchase rates and profitability.
- A complete list of supported delivery PIN codes.
- Whether every product is manufactured in India and how origin is documented at item level.
- Independent evidence on durability, customer satisfaction, environmental performance and export scale.
- How regulators will assess the arrangement if data-governance or India–China tensions change.
Fast product cycles may reduce inventory risk for the business, but claims about less waste or better sustainability are stated objectives, not independently verified environmental results.
Practical checklist before placing an order
- Open the listing from Google Play, the Indian App Store or sheinindia.in.
- Confirm the developer is Reliance Retail.
- Enter your delivery PIN code before checkout.
- Compare item measurements, composition, reviews and photographs.
- Read the exact return and refund conditions for each item.
- Review the app’s privacy disclosures and grant only permissions you are comfortable sharing.
- Save the order number, invoice, delivery proof and support messages.
The app interface has received redesign and bug-fix updates, so menu names and screenshots can change over time. Current version history is available on the Apple listing.
The Bottom Line
Shein is back in India through a Reliance-run local platform, not through an unchanged restoration of the app banned in 2020. The service is available on official app stores and the Indian website, but shoppers should verify the developer, PIN-code coverage, item-specific returns and privacy disclosures before buying. Reliance’s growth figures show strong downloads and catalogue expansion, while active users, financial terms, product quality and nationwide coverage remain unverified.
