There is no single best refurbished-electronics store. Choose Apple Certified Refurbished or Samsung Certified Re-Newed for manufacturer-backed phones, Best Buy Outlet for local pickup and returns, Back Market for broad refurbished selection, eBay Certified Refurbished for a longer stated warranty, Amazon Renewed for selection, Gazelle for simple used phones, Swappa for experienced buyers, and Dell Outlet or Lenovo Outlet for business PCs. Policies and inventory change, so verify the product page before paying.
This guide is for U.S. buyers. Warranty, carrier compatibility, taxes and return rights differ elsewhere. The retailer policies cited below were reported or displayed in 2025–2026 and are not guarantees for every listing.

What refurbished, renewed, open-box and used mean
These labels are not interchangeable or universal legal grades.

Used or pre-owned
A previous owner had the item. Inspection, repairs and battery replacement may be limited or undisclosed.
Open-box
Usually a return or display unit. It may be nearly new, but “open-box” does not by itself mean it was repaired or fully tested.
Refurbished
A returned or used product that was inspected, repaired or restored and verified to operate. The seller’s process determines how meaningful that description is.
Certified refurbished
A manufacturer or defined partner program with stated testing and support standards. Certification is program-specific, not a universal industry seal.

These are marketing terms. Read who performed the work, what parts were used, the warranty and the return policy instead of relying on the word alone.

Who did the work?
Accountability generally falls into five models:
- Manufacturer: Apple and Samsung programs provide the clearest connection to parts, diagnostics and support.
- Authorized partner: A service company follows a manufacturer’s requirements, but confirm the exact authorization.
- Retailer: Best Buy says refurbished products may be restored by Best Buy, the manufacturer or a third party.
- Managed marketplace: Back Market hosts independent refurbishers; its marketplace model means seller quality still matters.
- Peer-to-peer: Swappa connects buyers and sellers of primarily used devices. You must evaluate the individual listing.
Amazon Renewed also uses third-party suppliers subject to program criteria and performance requirements. A marketplace badge is not the same as manufacturer refurbishment.
Warranty and returns: compare the protection, not just the number
Check five separate terms before purchase: warranty length, warranty provider, exclusions, return window and who pays return shipping. Battery wear, liquid damage, cosmetic defects and accessories are often treated differently from electronic failures.

These figures come from current editorial comparisons and retailer pages, not a promise for every SKU. Read the item’s warranty before checkout. A longer warranty is useful only if it covers the failure you are most likely to encounter and does not require expensive shipping or a limited repair network.
Battery health is a purchase specification
For phones, tablets, laptops, watches, earbuds and handheld consoles, look for a stated minimum capacity or a visible health reading. Ask whether the battery is new, original or third-party, whether replacement is covered, and whether normal degradation is excluded. Do not assume an industry-wide 85% threshold.
Apple’s program states full functional testing and, according to current editorial coverage, new batteries and outer shells on applicable products. Confirm the exact category at Apple’s refurbished store. For any brand, check for “unknown part” warnings, cycle count where available and remaining operating-system support.

Best places by product
Phones
- iPhone with the least uncertainty: Apple Certified Refurbished.
- Galaxy: Samsung Certified Re-Newed.
- Price and selection: Compare Back Market, eBay Certified Refurbished and Amazon Renewed Premium after checking battery and seller terms.
- Centralized used-phone purchase: Gazelle.
- Lowest price for technically confident buyers: Swappa.
MacBooks and iPads
Apple is the quality benchmark. Back Market, eBay and Swappa may cost less, but inspect battery health, cycle count, keyboard layout, storage and parts warnings. Best Buy is useful when a local return matters.
Windows laptops and desktops
Start with Dell Outlet or Lenovo Outlet for business-class configurations and manufacturer-channel support. Best Buy adds local inspection. Marketplace deals require checks for BIOS or corporate-management locks, Windows licensing, battery wear and the correct power adapter.
TVs and appliances
Best Buy Outlet is a practical first stop because pickup and store returns can simplify a bulky return. Confirm screen defects, stands, remotes, delivery damage and manufacturer-service eligibility.
Cameras and lenses
eBay Certified Refurbished can offer selection and a stated warranty. For lenses, test autofocus and inspect fungus, haze, decentering, mount damage and filter threads; cosmetic grade alone is inadequate.
Headphones and earbuds
Prefer manufacturer-refurbished units or listings that explicitly cover replacement tips, batteries and hygiene. Older true-wireless earbuds can be cheap because their batteries are near end of life.

Consoles and handhelds
Check controller drift, disc-drive operation, HDMI output, storage, battery health and whether the console is banned from online services.

How to compare two listings
- Write down the exact model number, generation, storage, memory, color and cellular configuration.
- Calculate the delivered total, including tax, shipping, accessories, protection plans and a likely battery or charger replacement.
- Compare the condition definition and inspect real photos when available.
- Identify the refurbisher and warranty provider.
- Confirm return days, return-shipping rules, restocking fees and the date the warranty starts.
- For phones, verify unlocked status, IMEI cleanliness, eSIM and carrier-band compatibility.
- Check software-support years, replacement-part availability and resale value.
- Confirm every included accessory and whether it is genuine or generic.
Phone compatibility checks
- Unlocked status and supported LTE/5G bands for your carrier
- IMEI not blacklisted, financed or attached to another account
- Activation Lock removed on Apple devices and Google Factory Reset Protection removed on Android
- Correct regional model number and eSIM support
- Battery health, charging and any non-genuine-part warning

- Photograph the package and product before use.
- Record the serial number and IMEI.
- Confirm model, storage, color and carrier status.
- Test charging, battery health, cameras, microphones, speakers, buttons, ports, screen and biometrics.
- Test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular service and GPS.
- Check for Activation Lock, Google FRP, corporate management or BIOS passwords.
- Run the operating system’s diagnostics and install available security updates.
- Save the listing, condition description, invoice and warranty.
- Start a return immediately if the item differs from the description.

When buying new is the better deal
- The refurbished discount is small compared with a current sale on new stock.
- The older model is near the end of security or operating-system support.
- A new item includes a substantially longer warranty or guaranteed accessories.
- You need water-resistance assurance, enterprise support or a specific regional configuration.
- Battery replacement, missing chargers, deductibles or return shipping erase the savings.
Consumer Reports also recommends evaluating batteries, warranties and return policies rather than judging refurbished products by price alone: consumerreports.org.
Frequently asked questions
Is refurbished electronics safe?
It can be, when the seller explains testing, parts, warranty and returns. “Refurbished” alone is not a safety or quality guarantee.

Is manufacturer-refurbished better?
Usually for predictable parts, diagnostics and support; third-party listings can be cheaper and offer more configurations.
Is Back Market trustworthy?
It is a dedicated marketplace with stated condition grades, returns and warranty, but many products come from independent sellers. Evaluate the seller and listing.
Is Amazon Renewed worth buying?
It can provide excellent selection, but confirm the condition tier, supplier, battery language and exact coverage because terms vary.
Is eBay Certified Refurbished safe?
The certified badge is important because the reported two-year Allstate/SquareTrade warranty and 30-day returns apply to certified listings, not ordinary used listings.

There is no universal number. Buy only when the seller states a minimum, shows health data or offers a return period long enough to test it.
Do refurbished products include chargers?
Not necessarily. Read the included-items list and check whether the adapter is genuine, compatible and safe for the device.
