Bing Is Growing—But Is It Really Stealing Millions of Google Users?

Bing is growing and Google’s share has softened, but public data does not prove a mass Google-to-Bing migration. Here is what the 2026 numbers actually measure.

Short answer: Bing is gaining reach, especially in the United States, but the available data does not prove that millions of people have switched from Google to Bing. Microsoft reported 1 billion Bing monthly active users for the quarter ended March 31, 2026, while independent measurements still show Google handling roughly 91% of worldwide search activity. Those figures describe scale and share—not a verified migration of former Google users.

What the headline is based on

The most dramatic figure comes from Microsoft’s fiscal third-quarter 2026 earnings call on April 29, 2026. Microsoft said Bing monthly active users reached 1 billion for the first time. It also reported that search-advertising revenue excluding traffic-acquisition costs rose 12% year over year, driven by higher volume and revenue per search across Edge and Bing. (Microsoft earnings call)

That is meaningful evidence that Microsoft’s search ecosystem has substantial activity. It is not a statement that 1 billion unique people chose Bing instead of Google. Microsoft did not disclose how many users were new, how many had previously used Google, how many became Bing-primary users, or whether the count includes overlapping activity across Windows Search, Edge, Copilot, MSN, mobile apps and other surfaces.

What “monthly active users” does—and does not—tell you

  • It indicates activity during a month under Microsoft’s definition.
  • The public disclosure does not specify whether the unit is people, accounts, devices, browsers or a combination.
  • It does not establish that each user was counted only once across Microsoft products.
  • It does not identify the user’s former search engine or primary preference.
  • It does not show how many traditional web searches were replaced by AI interactions.

What independent market-share data shows

StatCounter’s June 2026 estimate puts Bing at 4.68% of worldwide search-engine share and Google at about 91%. In the United States, Bing’s share was 8.73%, compared with Google at 86.68%, Yahoo at 2.55% and DuckDuckGo at 1.52%. (Worldwide data; U.S. data)

#1 Best Overall
Market Google Bing What it represents
Worldwide, June 2026 Approximately 91% 4.68% Estimated share of measured search activity across desktop, mobile and tablet
United States, June 2026 86.68% 8.73% Estimated share of measured U.S. search activity across those device categories

StatCounter’s figures are modeled from activity on its network of websites, not a census of every search. “All platforms” combines devices whose behavior differs substantially. Search share is also not user share: one person may use Google on a phone and Bing on a Windows computer, and one search engine can be used for only certain queries.

Why a large number of searches is not a large number of switchers

A small percentage-point change applied to Google’s enormous query base could represent millions or even billions of searches. But that calculation produces searches, not people. It also cannot show where the activity went.

A decline in Google’s measured share could reflect several overlapping changes:

  • 11.6" HD (1366 x 768) Multi-Touch Display
  • Combo headphone/microphone jack - Noble Wedge Lock slot - HDMI; 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1
  • Windows 11 Pro
  • More Bing searches, including searches triggered by Windows and Edge defaults.
  • Queries sent to Copilot, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and other AI systems.
  • Searches on YouTube, Amazon, Reddit, TikTok, maps, app stores and specialist sites.
  • Fewer conventional web searches because an AI answer resolves the question directly.
  • Users adopting Google’s own AI Overviews or AI Mode rather than leaving Google.
  • Changes in device mix, geography, browser defaults or measurement methodology.

DataReportal reported that Bing and DuckDuckGo use had increased over the preceding 18 months outside China and Russia, while the decline in overall Google use was more limited than the decline in search-engine use generally. That pattern is consistent with a fragmented market, not a proven one-for-one Google-to-Bing transfer. (DataReportal)

Where Bing may be gaining

Distribution through Windows and Edge

Microsoft controls operating-system, browser and productivity surfaces that can expose users to Bing without a deliberate search-engine choice. A query typed into Windows Search, Edge or another Microsoft experience may be handled by Bing even when the user does not think of the action as visiting Bing.com.

AI features and Copilot

Conversational answers can make Bing more visible and can blur the boundary between a search query and an AI interaction. Microsoft’s reported growth therefore demonstrates ecosystem activity, but it does not isolate conventional Bing searches from Copilot or other integrated experiences.

Defaults, rewards and perceived quality

Defaults reduce the effort required to use a service, while Microsoft Rewards and dissatisfaction with advertising-heavy or low-quality results may encourage some users to stay. Microsoft also said Edge had gained share for 20 consecutive quarters, a company-reported indicator of distribution momentum rather than proof of user conversion.

What controlled research says about switching

A National Bureau of Economic Research field experiment examined Google’s search dominance and Bing adoption. Requiring people to make an active search-engine choice had little effect by itself. Paying Google users to try Bing improved their view of Bing’s quality, and some users defaulted into Bing did not switch back. The result shows that defaults and incentives can alter behavior; it does not measure a population-wide migration caused by the 2026 market-share figures. (NBER working paper)

How to judge whether Bing is actually “winning”

A credible assessment needs more than one headline number. Track these separately:

Rank #4
15.6 Inch Laptop Computer, N4020, 4GB DDR4 RAM, 128GB eMMC,with Windows 11
  • EFFORTLESS EVERYDAY PERFORMANCE: Powered by Intel Celeron N4020 processor and Windows 11 Home system, delivering reliable, low-power efficiency for daily tasks like document editing, email, online classes, and web browsing

  • LIGHTWEIGHT & SILENT OPERATION: Slim and portable for effortless travel or commuting. Features a 1MP HD webcam for remote meetings, 38Wh battery with 45W Type-C fast charging, and a fanless silent design for peaceful work environments.
  1. Absolute reach: Microsoft’s reported monthly active users.
  2. Measured share: Bing’s percentage of observed search activity.
  3. Growth: Comparable year-over-year or month-over-month changes.
  4. Retention: Whether trial users continue using Bing.
  5. Primary usage: Whether Bing handles most of a user’s searches.
  6. Commercial value: Search volume, advertising revenue and advertiser demand.
  7. Geography and device: U.S. and desktop performance should not be generalized worldwide or to mobile.
  8. Incrementality: Whether activity is genuinely new or shifted from another Microsoft surface.

The key missing evidence is a net-switching breakdown: how many Bing users were new, how many previously used Google, how many Google searches disappeared, and how many moved to AI or other platforms.

What Google’s position means

Google remains overwhelmingly dominant in measured search share. Its 2025 annual report describes the expansion of AI Overviews and AI Mode inside Search, so some changes in behavior may occur within Google’s ecosystem rather than benefit Bing. (Google 2025 annual report)

That makes “Google is losing users to Bing” too specific unless a dataset directly tracks the same people before and after a change. The public figures show Bing growth and a softer margin for Google, not the destination of every lost search.

Practical implications for users

  • Bing is worth testing, particularly if you use Windows, Edge or Microsoft’s AI tools.
  • Google remains the stronger default for global reach and broad ecosystem coverage.
  • Results vary by country, device, query type and preference for conventional links versus AI answers.
  • For important searches, compare both engines instead of inferring quality from market share.

Implications for publishers, SEO teams and advertisers

Bing traffic can be strategically valuable even at a smaller share. Publishers should compare first-party data from Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools rather than infer switching from industry percentages.

SEO platforms such as Semrush and Ahrefs can add competitive intelligence, but no tool can prove that a specific number of Google users switched to Bing.

The bottom line on the “millions stolen” claim

Bing’s growth is real: Microsoft reports 1 billion monthly active users, U.S. measured share is materially higher than Bing’s worldwide share, and Microsoft’s search business is growing. What has not been established is the claim that millions of Google users moved to Bing. The evidence supports “Bing is gaining reach while Google’s dominance has softened at the margin,” not “Bing has taken a measured number of Google users.”
