Apple’s U.S. 2023 Back to School promotion ran from June 6 through October 2, 2023. Qualified education purchasers who bought an eligible Mac or iPad through Apple received an Apple Gift Card worth $100 or $150, on top of education pricing. The promotion has expired and cannot be claimed now.
MacRumors reported the product-by-product gift-card values, while Apple’s June 2023 announcement confirmed the offer’s main terms.

What Apple’s 2023 offer included
The promotion applied in the United States to qualifying purchases made through Apple Retail, including the online Education Store and Apple Store locations. Buyers received a promotional Apple Gift Card and could also receive 20% off AppleCare+ for an eligible device during the promotional period.
The offer was an additional incentive layered on Apple’s normal education pricing. Apple’s education discount was year-round, while the gift-card promotion was temporary.

The promotion did not mean that every Mac qualified for $150: Mac mini was in the $100 tier. The reported product list also did not include the base iPad or iPad mini.
The 15-inch MacBook Air
Apple announced the 15-inch MacBook Air in June 2023. It became available with education pricing on June 13, starting at $1,199 for education rather than the $1,299 regular starting price, and eligible purchasers could receive the $150 gift card. This availability date was later than the June 6 promotion launch.
For context, Apple listed the 13-inch M2 MacBook Air at a $999 education starting price and the 13-inch M1 model at $899 in the 2023 announcement. Those were historical prices, not current prices.

Who qualified
Eligibility was not limited to currently enrolled college students. Apple described the offer as available to qualified purchasers in several education groups:
- Students currently attending a college or other higher-education institution.
- Students accepted for admission to a higher-education institution.
- Parents buying for an eligible college student.
- Faculty and staff of higher-education institutions.
- K–12 education employees, including qualifying homeschool teachers.
Purchasers still had to meet Apple’s applicable education requirements. Simply opening the Education Store did not make an otherwise ineligible customer eligible. Apple’s general education eligibility and purchasing rules are published at Apple’s education sales policies; those current rules should not be treated as a complete replacement for the archived 2023 promotion terms.
How the purchase and gift card worked
- Shop through Apple’s U.S. Education Store or an Apple Retail location.
- Select an eligible Mac or iPad and confirm that the education purchase requirements apply.
- Apple applies the education price and the promotion associated with the qualifying product.
- Review the final cart, order confirmation and receipt before completing payment.
It was not an unconditional cash rebate
Apple’s 2023 newsroom footnote said customers would be charged for all items in the promotional transaction, including the Apple Gift Card, while receiving a discount equal to the card’s value off the eligible product. In practical terms, a cart might show both the device and a $150 card, with a matching $150 promotional discount.

That means “free $150 gift card” can be misleading if it suggests an extra $150 in cash value on top of the full purchase price. The benefit was the equivalent discount in the qualifying transaction plus a card intended for later Apple purchases. The exact presentation could vary by checkout method, so the final order total—not an individual line item—was the figure to verify.
What the Apple Gift Card could buy
The card was an Apple Gift Card, not a cash-equivalent rebate. Subject to Apple’s gift-card rules, it could be used for Apple hardware and accessories, App Store apps and other digital purchases, Apple Music, iCloud+ and other Apple services. Purchase limits and exclusions
- Apple stated that a qualified purchaser could receive only one promotional Apple Gift Card per eligible Mac or iPad.
- The promotion was subject to availability and the October 2, 2023 end date.
- Institutional, enterprise, government, nonprofit, reseller and similar purchases were not the intended consumer education transaction.
- Refurbished or open-box products should not be assumed to qualify; the historical terms controlled eligibility.
Apple’s standard Education Store may also impose annual quantity limits by product category. Those general limits were separate from the Back to School gift-card limit and should not be treated as identical.

Returns and refunds
The promotional device and gift card were linked for return purposes. In general, a customer seeking a full refund had to return both. If the card was missing, redeemed or otherwise unavailable, Apple could deduct its original value from the refund or exchange value. Spending the card before deciding to keep the Mac or iPad therefore created a potential refund shortfall.
Apple’s current promotion terms illustrate this type of return policy, but the live page now documents a different promotion: Apple’s current Back to School terms. They should not be cited as the complete historical 2023 terms.

When it made sense
- You already needed a qualifying Mac or iPad for school or work.
- You could use the card for accessories, software, subscriptions or a later Apple purchase.
- You could combine the card with Apple’s model-specific education price.
- You wanted AppleCare+ and could benefit from the promoted 20% discount.
When the headline value overstated the benefit
- You preferred cash or could not use Apple products and services later.
- A competing retailer offered a larger direct discount on the same configuration.
- You were considering an ineligible iPad, iPad mini or other nonqualifying model.
- You might return the device after redeeming the card.
MacRumors characterized Apple’s ordinary education savings as roughly 5% to 10% on many Macs and iPads, but the percentage varied by model. Compare Apple’s actual education price and the practical value of the card with alternative retailer pricing rather than treating $150 as a universal cash saving.

What the 2023 promotion did not mean
- It was not $150 for every Mac; Mac mini received $100.
- It was not available with every iPad; the reported qualifying categories were iPad Air and iPad Pro.
- It was not restricted to currently enrolled students.
- It was not a permanently available Apple benefit.
- It was not an extra cash payment separate from the promotional transaction’s equal-value discount.
Current status
The 2023 offer ended on October 2, 2023. As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s live U.S. education terms describe a separate July 16–September 24, 2026 promotion, with different product coverage and values. Do not use the current offer to infer what a 2023 purchase qualified for.
The Bottom Line
Apple’s 2023 U.S. Back to School deal offered a $150 Apple Gift Card with a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro or iMac, and a $100 card with an iPad Air, iPad Pro or Mac mini. It supplemented education pricing but used an equal-value promotional discount in the transaction, carried return obligations, and expired October 2, 2023.
