Battery-electric vehicles remained a smaller, more concentrated business. Ford sold 84,113 EVs, led by the Mustang Mach-E, while citing weaker demand for some larger EVs, high costs and regulatory changes as reasons to redirect its strategy.
Ford’s overall 2025 sales result
Ford Motor Company’s 2026 U.S. sales release reported 2,204,124 vehicle sales for 2025, up 6.0% from 2024. The company said its U.S. market share reached 13.2%.
The gain came from a broad product mix rather than one model. Ford’s truck, van, SUV and hybrid businesses all contributed, allowing the company to grow even though battery-electric sales were limited to three nameplates.

Trucks and vans supplied most of the volume
Ford sold 1,268,749 trucks and vans in the United States during 2025—about 57.6% of its total U.S. sales. The F-Series remained the central volume engine.

F-Series sales alone represented roughly 37.6% of Ford’s total U.S. volume. Transit’s record result and the Maverick’s record year show that commercial vans and smaller trucks also supported the increase.
Hybrids outsold Ford’s EVs by a wide margin
Yes. Ford sold 228,072 hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2025, up 21.7%. That was 143,959 more vehicles than its 84,113 battery-electric vehicles—about 2.7 hybrid vehicles for every EV.

The hybrid result was concentrated in practical, high-volume trucks. The F-150 Hybrid sold 84,934 units, up 15.0%, while the Maverick Hybrid sold 81,034, up 17.9%. Those figures suggest many buyers wanted lower fuel consumption without switching entirely to a battery-electric vehicle.
What Ford’s EV total included
Ford’s 84,113 EVs came from the Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning and E-Transit. The Mustang Mach-E accounted for 51,620 sales and was roughly consistent with its 2024 record, so the annual result does not show a collapse in that model. The challenge was scale: the EV contribution was concentrated in three products, while hybrids were available across more familiar, high-volume vehicles.
Why Ford describes electric vehicles as a challenge
Ford’s annual unit sales and its EV strategy answer different questions. Sales show how many vehicles moved; the strategy depends on demand, development and manufacturing costs, regulatory requirements and the profitability of particular vehicle programs.

In December 2025, Ford said lower-than-expected demand, high costs and regulatory changes had weakened the business case for selected larger EVs. The company announced about $19.5 billion in special items, mostly in the fourth quarter of 2025, tied mainly to electrification actions.
Ford said it would put more emphasis on hybrids, extended-range electric vehicles, trucks, commercial products and a lower-cost Universal EV Platform. Chief executive Jim Farley described the move as “a customer-driven shift to create a stronger, more resilient and more profitable Ford.”

Ford’s third-quarter 2025 results provide important context. Electrified vehicles reached a quarterly record of 85,789, up 19.8%, including 55,177 hybrids and 30,612 EVs.

That record quarter can coexist with a difficult EV business case. Hybrid growth can raise total electrified sales while EV profitability, product breadth and demand for large battery-electric vehicles remain unresolved. In other words, Ford’s issue was not that customers rejected every form of electrification; it was that the company did not see the economics of some larger EV programs working at the expected scale.

For buyers seeking fuel savings
Ford’s sales mix indicates that its broadest electrified choice in 2025 was the hybrid route, particularly in the F-150 and Maverick. Buyers should compare the purchase price, fuel savings, towing or payload needs and expected ownership period rather than assume that a hybrid or EV is automatically cheaper to own.
For shoppers considering a Ford EV
The 2025 EV range was limited to the Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning and E-Transit. A shopper should therefore evaluate charging access, driving range, use case and local incentives for the specific model; Ford’s annual sales total does not establish any individual vehicle’s operating cost or resale value.

For investors and household budgets
The 6.0% sales increase is a volume result, not a complete profitability measure. The product mix matters because trucks, vans, hybrids and EVs have different costs and pricing dynamics. Ford’s announced special items also mean that 2025 financial statements require separate attention to electrification-related charges and their effect on reported results.
Ford’s sales release does not by itself provide transaction prices, incentive levels, model-level margins or lifetime ownership costs. Those are necessary to judge whether higher unit sales translated into better returns.
The clearest reading of Ford’s 2025 numbers
Ford grew by leaning into products that already matched its strongest demand: F-Series trucks, vans, the Maverick and hybrids. EVs were not absent—84,113 were sold, and the Mach-E held near its prior record—but they remained a smaller and narrower business. Ford’s response was to slow or reshape selected larger-EV plans while pursuing hybrids, extended-range vehicles, commercial products and lower-cost EV technology.
