AMD’s Ryzen AI Halo is a compact AI developer platform built around the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 “Strix Halo” processor. It combines 128GB of shared LPDDR5x memory, a 40-compute-unit Radeon 8060S GPU, 2TB of storage and a preconfigured ROCm-oriented software environment in a 150mm-square chassis. The US price is $3,999.99 for either Linux or Windows 11 Pro, with Micro Center listed as the exclusive retail channel and store-by-store availability.

That combination makes the Halo unusually capable at loading large local AI models. It does not, however, guarantee high generation speed, CUDA compatibility or upgradeability. Its value depends on whether you need very large shared memory in a tiny, ready-to-use system.

What Ryzen AI Halo actually is

AMD announced the Ryzen AI Halo Developer Platform at CES on January 5, 2026, describing it as the company’s first AMD-branded AI developer platform: AMD’s announcement. “Ryzen AI Halo” refers to the complete computer, while Ryzen AI Max+ 395 is the processor inside it. Strix Halo is the former codename for this Ryzen AI Max family.

It is best understood as a compact local-AI workstation rather than an ordinary consumer mini PC. AMD’s pitch includes the hardware, ROCm support, guided developer playbooks and access to tools such as LM Studio, ComfyUI and Visual Studio Code.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

Why its unified memory matters

The Halo’s 128GB of LPDDR5x memory is shared by the CPU, integrated GPU and AI workloads. Unlike a conventional desktop with separate system RAM and a fixed pool of graphics memory, this design can let the Radeon GPU access a much larger common pool. AMD says Ryzen AI Max+ systems can configure up to 96GB as VRAM, although the usable allocation depends on firmware, operating system and application behavior (AMD’s technical explanation).

That capacity can be more important than peak compute when a model will not fit on a typical consumer graphics card. It does not make the Halo equivalent to a high-end discrete-GPU workstation: memory capacity, bandwidth and processing throughput are separate limits.

What can it run locally?

Large-language models

AMD says the Halo can run models with up to 200 billion parameters locally (AMD’s product page). That is a capacity claim, not a universal speed or compatibility guarantee. A model’s quantized file, context window, key-value cache, runtime overhead, operating-system use and application buffers all consume memory. A 200-billion-parameter model in a high-bit format may require substantially more than 128GB.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Runs locally” can therefore mean that a suitably quantized model loads and generates tokens, not that it delivers workstation-class tokens per second. CPU/GPU offload, the inference backend and ROCm support materially affect results.

Coding and agent workflows

The memory pool is useful for local coding assistants, multimodal agents, model evaluation and prototyping. Developers still need to verify that their chosen model server, extensions and containers support AMD hardware rather than assuming CUDA compatibility.

Images, video and fine-tuning

AMD and Micro Center promote ComfyUI and other image-generation workflows. Adapter training or fine-tuning may be possible for suitably sized models, but the integrated GPU and software support impose limits. The Halo is not a replacement for a multi-GPU training server.

How fast is it?

AMD lists up to 60 FP16 TFLOPS of GPU performance and up to 50 TOPS for the NPU. These are peak theoretical ratings, not direct measurements of language-model throughput, image-generation time or training speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AMD’s comparison material reports, in its own testing on a pre-production 128GB Linux system, up to 3.3× higher performance than Apple’s M4 Pro on Ace Step 1.5, up to 4.0× on Flux 2 Klein and up to 3.9× on Qwen Image Edit. Those results are vendor benchmarks under AMD’s stated conditions, not independent review measurements (comparison details).

The same page compares a $3,999 Halo with a $4,699 Nvidia DGX Spark. Price, model versions, quantization, drivers, power limits and test methods mean the figures should not be treated as proof of universal superiority.

ROCm, Linux and Windows

The developer-platform proposition is as important as the silicon. AMD provides ROCm support, a Ryzen AI Halo Developer Center application, guided playbooks and Linux or Windows options. Micro Center’s setup material highlights ROCm, LM Studio, ComfyUI and Visual Studio Code (setup information).

ROCm is AMD’s GPU-computing and AI stack, not a guarantee that every CUDA-first application will work unchanged. CUDA-specific kernels, extensions, Docker images and optimization libraries may need a port or a different backend. Check the current Radeon ROCm compatibility documentation and the Windows support requirements for the exact framework and operating system you plan to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Linux is often the more natural ROCm development environment. Windows may be preferable for general desktop use, but library and driver parity can differ by release.

Alternatives worth comparing

Nvidia DGX Spark

DGX Spark is the closest compact alternative for CUDA-first work. Nvidia’s ecosystem remains the safer choice for broad framework, kernel and deployment compatibility. AMD’s comparison page cites a $4,699 retail reference for DGX Spark versus $3,999 for Halo; treat that as a vendor-provided comparison. See Nvidia’s official page.

Framework Desktop

A Framework Desktop using Ryzen AI Max+ 395 can offer similar core silicon in a larger, more modular system. An independent review listed a 128GB/2TB configuration at about $2,270 at review time, but prices change (review context). Framework’s product page is here.

Other Ryzen AI Max+ 395 mini PCs

Systems from GMKtec, Minisforum, Bosgame, Corsair and others may cost less or provide different ports and cooling. They are not automatically equivalent: power limits, firmware, memory configuration, thermals, warranty and ROCm readiness can change real results.

A conventional discrete-GPU desktop

A custom Nvidia desktop is generally the safer professional choice for CUDA software, upgradeability and supported-workload throughput. It is larger and often uses more power, but its graphics hardware, storage and memory can be replaced. The Halo is more compelling when fitting a large model into a small 128GB shared-memory system is the primary requirement.

Verdict

The Ryzen AI Halo is a specialized, unusually compact local-AI workstation. Its strongest selling point is the combination of 128GB unified memory, Strix Halo compute and a turnkey ROCm-oriented environment—not universal performance leadership. At $3,999.99, it makes sense for developers who need that memory capacity and convenience in a tiny box. Buyers with CUDA-only software, upgrade plans or less demanding models will usually get better value from a discrete-GPU desktop, Framework Desktop or a lower-cost Ryzen AI Max+ 395 system.
