Huawei’s New EV Battery Patent Claims 3,000 km of Range and Five-Minute Charging

Huawei’s new battery patent is reported to target 3,000 km of range and ultra-fast charging, but no production EV has independently demonstrated those figures. Here’s how to interpret the claims.

Short answer: Huawei has a patent-stage sulfide solid-state battery claim that has been reported as delivering up to 3,000 km (about 1,864 miles) of driving range and extremely fast charging. Those are targets described in patent coverage—not an independently verified result from a production electric car.

What Huawei’s patent is reported to claim

CarNewsChina reported the 3,000 km range figure on June 18, 2025, and VnExpress repeated it on August 19, 2025. The reported battery architecture is a sulfide-based solid-state design using a nitrogen-doped sulfide electrolyte.

Claim or feature What the available reporting says Important qualification
Driving range Up to 3,000 km (about 1,864 miles) Patent-stage claim; the test cycle and vehicle configuration are not established in the coverage
Charging “Five-minute” charging VnExpress describes 10%–80% in under five minutes; SlashGear presents a full-charge claim. The exact window must be confirmed from the patent
Energy density About 400–500 Wh/kg Reported by CarNewsChina; SlashGear cites a 500 Wh/kg upper figure
Chemistry Sulfide solid-state electrolyte with nitrogen doping Reported design intent is better lithium-interface stability and fewer side reactions
Commercial status Patent and theoretical or target performance No production vehicle or retail battery has been identified

That distinction matters. A patent can describe a composition, structure or operating target without proving that cells can be manufactured consistently, assembled into a vehicle pack and operated safely for years.

Can an EV really charge in five minutes?

Technically, a five-minute session is possible only if the battery, charger and electrical connection can sustain an exceptional power level. The phrase is incomplete without a start and end state. Charging from 10% to 80% is materially less energy than charging from 0% to 100%, and real vehicles generally reduce power as the battery fills.

The power calculation

For a simple estimate, average battery power equals the energy added divided by charging time. A 10%–80% session adds 70% of pack capacity. Over five minutes (one-twelfth of an hour), the ideal average is:

Average power = 0.70 × battery capacity (kWh) × 12.

For a hypothetical 100 kWh pack, that is 840 kW at the battery before charging losses. The vehicle would need a charger and electrical system capable of supplying more than that at the outlet, with cooling to handle heat. A full 0%–100% session on the same pack would require an ideal average of 1.2 MW for five minutes. These are illustrations, not specifications for Huawei’s proposed pack.

Why “five minutes flat” is not yet a settled specification

VnExpress gives the more specific 10%–80% window. SlashGear’s July 1, 2025 report uses a full-charge description. Until the patent’s test conditions and charging window are independently documented, “five minutes flat” should be treated as headline shorthand rather than a confirmed 0%–100% vehicle result.

What the solid-state chemistry is intended to do

In the reported design, a sulfide electrolyte replaces the liquid electrolyte used in conventional lithium-ion cells. Nitrogen doping is described as a way to reduce unwanted reactions at the lithium interface. The intended benefits are improved electrochemical stability, safety and cycle life.

Those are design objectives, not demonstrated vehicle outcomes. Solid-state cells still face practical problems including contact resistance, sensitivity to processing conditions, pressure management, moisture control for sulfide materials and integration into large modules. The patent coverage does not establish a production cycle-life result, pack-level safety test, manufacturing yield or cost.

Why 3,000 km is not the same as certified range

Range depends on the vehicle, aerodynamics, temperature, speed, tires, payload and the test procedure. The reports do not identify a CLTC, WLTP, EPA or other certified cycle for the 3,000 km figure. It therefore cannot be compared directly with a retail car’s certified range.

Energy density is also easy to misread. A cell-level figure in Wh/kg does not tell you the finished pack’s weight after adding packaging, cooling, electronics, crash protection and structural material. Nor does it establish how much usable energy the vehicle allows between its displayed 0% and 100%.

What has actually been demonstrated elsewhere

StoreDot’s November 3, 2021 release documents five-minute demonstrations in a two-wheeled electric vehicle and a drone. That is evidence about StoreDot’s technology, not Huawei’s patent. StoreDot CEO Dr Doron Myersdorf wrote that “Our development of extreme fast charging batteries is aligned with our commitment to the holistic improvement of the EV battery ecosystem.” A demonstration in a smaller vehicle does not prove that a passenger-car pack can accept the same power, manage the same heat or deliver the same range.

Is Huawei’s battery production-ready?

Not on the evidence currently reported. SlashGear’s Brian McHugh wrote on July 1, 2025: “Of course, for now, it’s just a patent. This battery may never actually come to fruition or get the same performance Huawei is claiming.” That is an assessment of the development risk, not a statement from Huawei.

Before treating the claim as a commercial product, look for all of the following:

  • An identified vehicle, battery capacity and finished-pack weight.
  • An independently measured range result with a named test cycle.
  • A clearly defined charging window, starting state of charge and ending state of charge.
  • Charger voltage, current and sustained power, rather than a peak number alone.
  • Thermal-management requirements and evidence of repeated fast-charge sessions.
  • Cycle-life data, abuse testing, warranty terms and production validation.
  • A manufacturing announcement, delivery timeline and retail vehicle using the cells.

Huawei reported more than 165,000 active granted patents company-wide at the end of 2025 on its intellectual-property page. That figure describes Huawei’s overall patent portfolio; it does not validate this particular battery claim.

What this means for EV buyers and household budgets

There is no identified Huawei battery pack, compatible replacement, five-minute charger or patent-specific consumer product to price or buy. A future vehicle using this technology could change the economics of long trips by reducing charging stops, but the financial result would still depend on the car’s purchase price, electricity tariff, charger demand charges, battery warranty and maintenance.

For now, do not use the 3,000 km figure to justify a deposit, resale assumption or home-electrical upgrade. Wait for a named production vehicle, certified range, published charging curve and independent durability evidence.

Bottom line

Huawei’s reported patent describes an ambitious sulfide solid-state battery target: up to 3,000 km of claimed range, roughly 400–500 Wh/kg and charging described in coverage as five minutes. The strongest specific charging description is 10%–80% in under five minutes, while another report presents a full-charge claim. Until those conditions are verified in a production vehicle, the figures are engineering claims—not a currently available EV capability.
