Consumer Reports does not publish a page officially titled “15 Best Consumer Reports Laptops for 2026.” This guide is an independent shortlist of 15 models appearing in Consumer Reports’ 2026 laptop testing, ratings, or buying coverage, organized by buyer need rather than an unverified overall ranking. Check the exact score, tested configuration, availability, and price before purchasing.
Consumer Reports’ current coverage includes more than 150 laptop models and evaluates performance, display, ergonomics, versatility, battery life, reliability, owner satisfaction, weight, operating system, memory, storage, graphics, and wireless features. See the 2026 Best Laptops article, buying guide, and ratings overview.

| Chromebook Plus model | Browser-based school and work | ChromeOS | CR’s buying guide explains Chromebook Plus as a higher-tier platform certification, not a uniform quality guarantee. | Not a substitute for Windows-only desktop applications. |
How this list was selected
The shortlist combines Consumer Reports’ 2026 editorial coverage, buying guide and ratings database with use-case analysis. Consumer Reports evidence receives the greatest weight, followed by fit for the buyer’s work, configuration value, long-term usability and purchase practicality. That is this article’s framework, not a formula published by Consumer Reports.
A product can appear in the ratings database without being the best choice for every buyer. Overall score also cannot answer every question: a gaming model may trade battery life and portability for sustained graphics performance, while an ultraportable may do the reverse. Brand reliability and owner satisfaction are supporting evidence, not guarantees for an individual SKU. Consumer Reports discusses brand-level reliability separately in its best laptop brands and most reliable laptop brands coverage.

#1 Best Overall
- BUILT FOR COLLEGE. AND BEYOND — MacBook Air with the M5 chip packs blazing speed and powerful AI capabilities into an incredibly portable design. And with up to 18 hours of battery life,* this thin and light powerhouse is ready to take on almost any major, just about anywhere.
- TEAR THROUGH TOUGH ASSIGNMENTS — With its faster CPU and unified memory, the M5 chip delivers even more performance and fluidity across apps, making multitasking and creative workflows smooth and responsive. A powerful Neural Engine and next-generation GPU with Neural Accelerators give you a powerful platform for AI.
- MAKE QUICK WORK OF YOUR TO-DO LIST — Apple Intelligence helps you write, express yourself, and get things done effortlessly — whether it’s for school or everyday life. With groundbreaking privacy protections, it gives you peace of mind that no one else can access your data — not even Apple.*
- UP TO 18 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Air delivers incredible battery life with amazing performance, so you can power through a full day of classes without worrying about plugging in.
- A BRILLIANT 13.6-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Air supports 1 billion colors, making photos and videos pop with rich contrast and sharp detail, and text appears supercrisp. So everything — from class presentations to movies to games — looks truly stunning.
The 15 recommendations
1. Apple MacBook Air 2026: best overall for mainstream use
The 2026 MacBook Air is the strongest general-purpose starting point for buyers who want a light, quiet computer for school, office work, browsing, travel and everyday creative tasks. A public Consumer Reports listing shows an M5 processor, 16GB memory, 1TB storage, a 13.6-inch 2,560×1,664 display, Wi‑Fi 7, macOS Tahoe 26.3 and approximately 2.7 pounds. The same listing reports about 15 hours of web battery life and 13.5 hours of video battery life; those figures apply to that tested configuration, not every Air.
Choose it when battery efficiency, portability and Apple software integration matter more than gaming, extensive ports or user upgrades. Check the exact configuration in CR’s MacBook Air 2026 review and ratings page before buying.
2. HP OmniBook Ultra 14: best premium Windows productivity option
The OmniBook Ultra 14 is a candidate for buyers who need Windows applications in a premium, portable package. Confirm the exact model number, processor architecture, memory, storage, display and battery result. If it uses an ARM processor, verify VPN, printer, driver, school, business and anti-cheat compatibility before purchase.
An NPU or Copilot+ label describes supported local AI features; it does not establish that ordinary office work, games or creative applications run faster. Use the CR ratings fields for performance, ergonomics, display and battery rather than the AI label alone.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →3. Apple MacBook Pro: best for sustained creative workloads
MacBook Pro makes sense for long video exports, software development, large photo libraries, audio production and other sustained workloads. More powerful chips, active cooling and additional ports can justify its cost over an Air. It is a poor value for email, streaming and basic documents.
Match the tested screen size, chip, memory and storage to the retailer SKU. macOS also rules it out for some Windows-only applications, and gaming support remains narrower than on Windows. Apple’s official MacBook Pro page shows current configurations; compare those details with CR’s ratings before ordering.
4. Apple MacBook Neo, 256GB: best lower-cost Mac possibility
The MacBook Neo can appeal to shoppers who want macOS at a lower entry price. Its likely compromise is capacity: 256GB leaves less room for applications, photos and offline files after the operating system is installed. Confirm storage, external-display support, performance, availability and the exact CR configuration.
Rank #2
- AN AMAZING MAC AT A SURPRISING PRICE — With an incredibly portable and durable aluminum design, up to 16 hours of battery life,* and the A18 Pro chip, MacBook Neo is ready to go wherever school takes you.
- FOUR STUNNING COLORS. ONE DURABLE DESIGN — Choose from four beautiful colors — Silver, Blush, Citrus, or Indigo — each with a color-coordinated keyboard. And MacBook Neo is made with a durable recycled aluminum enclosure that helps it reach 60 percent recycled content by weight — the most ever in any Apple product.*
- FLY THROUGH EVERYDAY ASSIGNMENTS — Whether you’re cramming for finals, using Apple Intelligence* to summarize class notes, creating presentations, or even playing the latest Apple Arcade game,* MacBook Neo delivers the performance and AI capabilities you need to get things done.
- UP TO 16 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Neo delivers all day battery life, so you can power through from early morning classes to late night study sessions without worrying about plugging in.
- A VIBRANT 13-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Neo supports 1 billion colors, so photos and videos pop and text is crisp for easy reading.
It is suitable for light productivity, browsing and schoolwork when the software fits macOS. It is less suitable for large media libraries, demanding development environments or buyers who cannot use external storage.
5. 13-inch MacBook Air with M3: best previous-generation value
A discounted M3 Air can be smarter than a newer laptop when the price is materially lower and the warranty is intact. CR’s visible configuration has 16GB memory, 512GB storage, a 13.6-inch display, Wi‑Fi 6E and roughly 2.7 pounds. Confirm that the listing is the same memory and storage version.
Consumer Reports notes that a reduced-price prior-generation laptop can outperform a new model on value. Do not treat an old sale price as permanent; record the retailer, configuration and date.
6. HP OmniBook X: best battery-focused Windows choice
The OmniBook X is worth considering when unplugged Windows use is the priority. Verify the processor variant, display, memory, storage and whether your required applications run natively or through emulation. Compare CR’s web and video battery measurements only with similarly tested laptops.
Its best alternative is a MacBook Air for buyers comfortable with macOS, or a conventional x86 Windows laptop for maximum legacy-software compatibility.

The XPS 13 9345 is a compact option for frequent travelers who value a small footprint. Confirm that the retailer is selling the 9345 configuration evaluated by CR, not a differently equipped XPS 13 with the same family name. Check ports, charger size, webcam, screen brightness, sleep behavior and processor architecture.
It is a travel specialist, not a gaming or workstation recommendation. A larger ThinkBook or gaming laptop may be better if sustained performance, upgradeability or many ports matter more than weight.

8. Samsung Galaxy Book5 Pro: best premium Windows alternative for Samsung users
The publicly visible CR configuration pairs a Core Ultra 7 256V processor with 16GB memory, 512GB storage, a 14-inch OLED display, 2,880×1,800 resolution, Wi‑Fi 7 and Windows 11 Home at approximately 2.7 pounds. OLED offers excellent contrast, but assess brightness, battery behavior and office ergonomics alongside panel technology.
Galaxy-phone owners may get the most ecosystem benefit. Compare the exact configuration at Samsung’s Galaxy Book page and do not assume every Book5 Pro listing uses the tested display or storage.
9. Lenovo ThinkBook 14 Gen 9 Intel: best business-style value
The ThinkBook 14 Gen 9 Intel suits buyers who prefer a conventional Windows design, practical connectivity and a moderate screen size. Match the CPU, RAM, SSD, panel resolution and operating system to the CR-listed unit. Retailer-exclusive configurations can differ substantially.
For a larger workspace, consider the ThinkBook 16 Gen 9; for maximum portability, compare the XPS 13 or MacBook Air.
10. Lenovo ThinkBook 16 Gen 9 Intel: best large productivity laptop
The 16-inch ThinkBook is useful for spreadsheets, split-screen work and buyers who do not want an external monitor. Check the actual weight, battery capacity, display resolution and upgradeability before buying. A large screen usually increases travel burden, even when the processor is similar to a 14-inch model.
11. Acer Aspire 16 AI: best affordable AI-capable option
The Aspire 16 AI is a value candidate when a larger screen and newer platform features are wanted without premium pricing. Verify memory, storage, display quality and processor; an “AI” badge cannot compensate for 8GB RAM, a small SSD or a dim panel.

12. Asus ProArt PX13: best compact creator laptop
The ProArt PX13 is aimed at creators who need Windows software and potentially GPU-accelerated work in a smaller chassis. Confirm the dedicated GPU, VRAM, display coverage, cooling behavior, ports and battery. Photo editing, video editing and 3D work have different requirements; a processor name alone does not establish professional suitability.
For large video projects, 32GB memory and 1TB storage are safer targets where available. A MacBook Pro may be quieter and more efficient for macOS workflows, while the ProArt can be preferable for Windows-specific tools.
13. Asus Nitro V 16 AI: best gaming candidate among the listed models
The Nitro V 16 AI is the gaming-oriented choice in this shortlist. Before buying, identify the exact dedicated GPU and VRAM, display refresh rate, cooling system, memory and SSD upgrade paths. Gaming performance is measured while plugged in, and battery life, fan noise and charger weight are materially different from thin-and-light laptops.
Do not select it solely because the processor carries an AI name. Compare the GPU and display first, and check game compatibility for any ARM-based configuration.
14. Chromebook Plus: best for browser-centered work
Chromebook Plus can be a strong fit for Google Workspace, browser-based schoolwork, streaming and buyers who want simple maintenance. Consumer Reports describes Chromebook Plus as a higher-tier certification involving performance, build and AI-related requirements, but certification does not make every model’s screen, keyboard, battery or support identical.
ChromeOS is a poor fit for specialized Windows desktop applications, high-end local video production, some engineering and accounting tools, and demanding native gaming. Confirm the school or employer’s required applications before buying.
15. Acer Aspire 5 or Asus Vivobook 17: best budget large-screen route
These families can offer useful screen size at value prices, but the exact SKU matters more than the badge. Prefer 16GB memory and a 512GB SSD when affordable. Treat 8GB and 256GB as meaningful limitations if upgrades are impossible, and inspect display resolution, webcam, chassis, warranty and return terms.

- Memory: 16GB is the practical default for a new Windows or macOS laptop. Treat non-upgradable 8GB as a serious compromise.
- Storage: 512GB SSD is a sensible baseline; choose 1TB for games, photos, video or long ownership. 256GB can fill quickly.
- Display: Check resolution, brightness, color coverage, refresh rate and panel type, not just “OLED” or screen size.
- Connectivity: Count USB-C, USB-A, display output, headphone and card-reader ports. Confirm USB-C charging and dock compatibility.
- Software: Verify macOS, Windows x86, Windows ARM or ChromeOS support for every required application, driver and peripheral.

Mac, Windows or Chromebook?
Choose a Mac when
You value battery efficiency, quiet portable hardware and Apple ecosystem integration, and your applications run on macOS. Macs generally offer little user-upgrade flexibility, so buy sufficient memory and storage initially.
Choose Windows when
You need the broadest desktop-software, gaming and hardware selection. Windows also offers the widest range of ports, prices and form factors, but quality and battery behavior vary greatly between models.
Choose ChromeOS when
Your work is primarily browser-based and you want simple setup and maintenance. Confirm offline needs and school or business software first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to verify a retailer listing
- Copy the complete model number, not just the family name.
- Match processor architecture, memory, storage, screen size, resolution, graphics, Wi‑Fi and operating system with the CR-tested configuration.
- Check whether the listed price is a sale, coupon price, membership price or “from” price.
- Confirm the return period, warranty, keyboard layout and United States availability.
- Save the listing date and configuration; replace discontinued SKUs rather than silently substituting another model.
Price and reliability cautions
Consumer Reports “from” prices and retailer listings are not guaranteed current prices. Prices change by retailer and configuration, and a discounted older laptop may be the better financial decision. Never compare two prices without matching RAM, SSD, processor, display and operating system.
Reliability information is generally brand-level evidence. A strong brand can still sell an uneven entry-level laptop, and a highly rated model can still have an individual defect. Consider warranty, support and return policy alongside CR’s reliability and owner-satisfaction measures.
