The dependable long-term solution is for each adult to use a separate Amazon account linked through Amazon Family. Amazon says adult members’ orders stay private from one another when they use their own sign-ins, while one Prime membership can share eligible benefits.
If the order was already placed on a genuinely shared login, you cannot guarantee that it is hidden. You can, however, reduce accidental disclosure by silencing Alexa and app alerts, protecting email, and using a private delivery location.
The reliable fix: separate adult accounts through Amazon Family
Amazon Family (the current name for Amazon Household since March 2025) links separate Amazon accounts. It is free to set up, and only one adult needs Prime for the household to share eligible Prime benefits. Amazon’s U.S. guidance supports up to two adults, up to four teens and up to four children; those category limits should not be treated as one universal six-person allowance.
The privacy benefit comes from separate Amazon accounts, not from separate browser windows, device profiles or email addresses attached to one shared login. Amazon says adults using their individual accounts cannot see each other’s orders or content, although selected Prime and digital benefits can be shared. See Amazon’s explanation at Amazon Family.

Which arrangement provides privacy?

How to set up Amazon Family
- Sign in to the Prime adult’s Amazon account and open Amazon Family.
- Choose Add Adult.
- Enter the other adult’s name and email address, or use Amazon’s together-sign-up and verification flow.
- Have the invited adult accept the invitation and sign in with an existing Amazon account or create a new one.
- Before buying, check the account menu to confirm that each adult is shopping under their own sign-in.
- Review Family Library and other content-sharing settings, and turn off sharing that is not wanted.
Each adult should use an email address, phone number and recovery method they independently control. Linking accounts does not make payment information invisible: card statements, bank alerts, receipts and household budgeting tools can still reveal a merchant, date or amount.
What to do if the purchase is already on the shared account
Assume that an order placed on the shared login can be found by anyone who can access that account. Use this damage-control checklist immediately:
- Disable Alexa shopping disclosures: In the Alexa app go to More → Settings → Notifications → Amazon Shopping. Turn off the option that allows product titles to be spoken or shown. Labels can vary by app version, device, country and account type, so look for the equivalent shopping-notification controls.
- Check every linked device and account: Review Alexa devices, phones, tablets, watches and other endpoints. Amazon warns that Alexa-enabled devices can receive notifications from linked accounts.
- Mute or limit Amazon push alerts: Remove shopping notifications from shared phones and lock screens.
- Protect the email trail: If the account owner controls the inbox, move order and shipping messages out of shared views without deleting information needed for returns or support.
- Use secure delivery: Select an eligible Amazon Locker or another secure pickup point when available at checkout. Check availability and any charge for the specific order at Amazon Locker.
- Retrieve the parcel promptly: Do not leave it in a common area where packaging, labels or delivery photos can reveal it.
These steps reduce accidental disclosure; they do not remove the order from the shared account or guarantee secrecy.

Can you archive or delete an Amazon order?
For Amazon.com in the U.S., do not treat “Your Orders → Archive order” as a current, dependable method. An Amazon staff response in May 2025 stated, “You can no longer archive orders.” See the Amazon U.S. forum response.

Regional interfaces differ. Amazon’s U.K. help page still explains how previously archived orders can be found, while another U.K. page says the hide-order option is no longer available. Those pages do not establish that archiving works on Amazon.com:
Where archiving exists, it only removes an order from the default list; it is not deletion. Amazon does not provide a dependable consumer-facing workflow for deleting one purchase from a shared Amazon.com account while keeping the account active. Closing the entire account is a drastic loss of access and is not a practical way to conceal one order.

What can still reveal a supposedly private purchase?
Even an adult Amazon Family order is private only from other adult members’ Amazon order histories. Check these other exposure points:
- Account and device access: Shared computers, tablets, phones, saved passwords, autofill, the Amazon app, Your Orders, Buy Again, recommendations, lists and registries.
- Communications: Order-confirmation and delivery emails, push notifications, lock-screen previews and third-party package-tracking apps.
- Smart-home devices: Alexa announcements or displays on any linked Echo or other device.
- Payments: Card statements, bank alerts, receipts and shared budgeting software.
- Physical delivery: The shipping label, packaging, delivery recipient, visible parcel, delivery image, Amazon Photos or smart-doorbell footage.

When a completely separate account is better
Use an unlinked Amazon account when the purchase is highly sensitive, Amazon Family is unavailable in your marketplace, you do not want shared digital features, or another household member must not be associated with the account. This may require paying for separate Prime benefits.

In a coercive or abusive situation, use a device, email address, payment method and delivery address the other person cannot monitor. Changing one notification setting or clearing browser history is not a safety guarantee; consider local domestic-violence or digital-safety resources.

- Create or use your own adult Amazon account.
- Link it through Amazon Family only if the relationship and shared benefits are appropriate.
- Confirm the active account before adding the item to the cart and placing the order.
- Use an independently controlled email address and phone number.
- Review Alexa, app, email and lock-screen shopping notifications.
- Choose a secure pickup point when the home delivery itself could reveal the purchase.
- Retrieve the package promptly and store it outside shared areas.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Amazon Family hide old orders from a shared account?
No. Creating Family does not retroactively move purchases. Orders remain associated with the account that placed them; use the separate adult account for future orders.
Can my spouse see my orders if we share Prime?
Amazon says adult members cannot see one another’s orders when each uses a separate individual account linked through Amazon Family. Shared Prime benefits do not require a shared login.

Can Alexa reveal an Amazon purchase?
Yes. Alexa-enabled devices may announce or display shopping information from linked accounts. In the Alexa app, use More → Settings → Notifications → Amazon Shopping and disable product-title disclosures on relevant accounts and devices.
Does Incognito mode or a second browser profile help?
No. Those tools separate browsing sessions, not Amazon account data. If both sessions use the same login, the order history remains shared.
Can Amazon accounts be merged later?
Do not plan on merging accounts as a privacy strategy. Keep purchases on the intended adult account and verify Amazon’s current account-support options before attempting any transfer.
What if the Archive order button is missing?
That is consistent with the reported Amazon.com change. Do not rely on archiving; reduce notifications and delivery exposure for the existing order, then use separate adult accounts for future purchases.
The Bottom Line
For Amazon.com, private future purchases require separate adult Amazon accounts, ideally linked through Amazon Family. An order already placed on a shared login cannot be guaranteed private, so silence notifications, secure the delivery and protect email and devices.
