Ford’s August 11, 2025 announcement is a plan—not a vehicle you can order today—for a new generation of lower-cost electric vehicles built on a “Universal EV Platform.” The first announced product is a midsize, four-door electric pickup targeted for a 2027 debut at about a $30,000 starting MSRP. In August 2026, Axios reported that Ford plans to call the pickup Fathom, listed a $28,350 starting price and said preorders were expected in early 2027. Those remain reported targets, not proof of final pricing, availability or specifications.
What Ford actually announced
Ford says its Universal EV Platform is designed for multiple body styles, including trucks and cars. The only product Ford formally identified in the August 2025 announcement was a midsize, four-door pickup planned for production in Louisville, Kentucky.
CEO Jim Farley called the program “a Model T moment.” He was describing a proposed change in vehicle design and manufacturing, not claiming that the new EVs will have the historical impact of the Model T. Ford chief EV, digital and design officer Doug Field framed the challenge as making innovation available to millions of customers.
Earlier predictions about a specific small pickup, SUV or full-size pickup should not be treated as confirmed Ford product plans. Ford has said the platform can support different forms, but it has not announced a complete launch lineup or dates for additional models.

How Ford says it will lower production cost
The “assembly tree”
Ford proposes replacing one long, conventional assembly line with three branches:
Rank #2
- OFFICIALLY LICENSED BY FORD F-150 RAPTOR: This 12V ride on toys for kids for kids is not just a toy—it’s a miniature take on America’s bestselling pickup, offering kids a feel of the real thing every time they hit the driveway

Raised side panels offer extra protection during turns, keeping every drive calm and under control
- AUDIO FEATURES FOR IMMERSIVE PLAY: From the realistic engine sounds to the honk of the horn, every sound is designed to bring driving to life. With Bluetooth connectivity, FM radio, and early learning mode, kids can tune in to their favorite songs and stories, turning backyard rides into engaging moments of exploration
- TWO MODES FOR EVERY STAGE: You take the wheel when they’re small—with 2.4G remote control and emergency stop function. As they grow, they’ll take the reins using the foot pedal and steering wheel, gaining confidence behind the wheel while enjoying the freedom to navigate independently
- STORAGE THAT MOVES WITH YOU: A rear trunk of this kids electric car makes quick trips and outdoor play a breeze. Whether it’s snacks, toys, or a water bottle, everything your child needs can ride along too—keeping your hands free and your outings more relaxed
- The front section is assembled separately.
- The rear section is assembled separately.
- A structural battery section is built with interior parts such as seats, consoles and carpeting.
The branches are joined near the end of assembly. Ford says this arrangement could reduce factory space and improve worker ergonomics while increasing production speed. Associated Press reported Ford’s comparison with a typical vehicle or current manufacturing benchmark as:
| Ford target | Company’s planned comparison |
|---|---|
| 20% fewer parts | Versus a typical vehicle |
| 25% fewer fasteners | Versus the company’s comparison benchmark |
| 40% fewer workstations | Versus the current manufacturing approach |
| 15% faster assembly | Versus a typical vehicle |
These are Ford’s projections, not independently measured results from a production truck. Whether they translate into a lower retail price will depend on tooling, labor, battery costs, warranty provisions, logistics and the company’s pricing decisions.

Michigan-built LFP batteries
Ford says the new vehicles will use lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries assembled in Michigan. Farley described that battery operation as important to the cost and profitability strategy during Ford’s second-quarter 2025 earnings call. The announcement did not provide a pack size, EPA range, charging time, connector type or a specific consumer benefit, so those details cannot yet be used to judge the truck’s value.

- EPA driving-range figure or battery capacity;
- DC-fast-charging speed or home-charging time;
- charging connector or network-access details;
- payload, towing, bed dimensions or four-wheel-drive availability;
- trim walk, options pricing, warranty terms or delivery fees;
- public reveal date or finalized preorder process.
That makes the $30,000-or-less headline useful as a direction, but insufficient for a purchase decision. A buyer comparing the truck with a current vehicle should wait for an official order guide and EPA data before estimating monthly payments, fuel savings or charging costs.
How to interpret the “Model T moment” claim
Ford is promising simultaneous changes to platform design, battery sourcing and factory assembly. That combination could help the company offer a lower entry price at high volume. It does not establish that Ford will achieve Model T-scale historical disruption, nor that the truck will be the cheapest EV to own once insurance, financing, charging equipment and maintenance are included.
For personal-finance planning, treat the program as a potential future option rather than a guaranteed $30,000 purchase. Keep existing transportation plans intact, avoid paying a deposit until Ford publishes official terms, and compare the final out-the-door price with available alternatives when specifications and incentives are known.
