Battelle cut 68 PNNL positions across the Pacific Northwest in late 2025

Battelle, PNNL’s operating contractor, scheduled 68 research, engineering and operations positions to end across the Pacific Northwest between Nov. 18 and Dec. 1, 2025. Here is what the WARN filing says—and what remains unknown.

Battelle Memorial Institute, the contractor that operates Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), scheduled 68 PNNL-related positions to end between November 18 and December 1, 2025. A Washington Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing cited funding uncertainty, changing federal mission priorities and a resulting restructuring of research and operations. The cuts were reported across Richland, Seattle, Oregon and remote positions—not as a single-day federal employee layoff.

GeekWire’s account of the WARN filing is the available source for the detailed count and job categories.

Where the 68 positions were located

Location listed in the WARN account Positions What that means
Richland, Washington 42 PNNL’s principal campus and the largest concentration of affected positions
Seattle 3 Positions associated with the Seattle presence
Oregon 3 The available account does not identify the Oregon site
Remote 20 Remote positions; the filing account does not specify their home locations
Total 68 Reported for this WARN event

The 20 remote positions should not be treated as a separate physical facility or assigned to Washington, Oregon or Seattle without additional documentation.

They were not all engineers

The shorthand “68 engineers” is misleading. Reported affected categories included:

  • Software, mechanical, nuclear and systems engineers
  • National-security specialists
  • Cybersecurity researchers
  • Data scientists
  • Project managers
  • Administrative coordinators
  • Other research and operations roles

The available report identifies categories of affected positions, but does not provide a complete list of individual employees or an engineering-only count.

Who made the cuts?

Battelle is PNNL’s operating contractor and the employer context for this action. PNNL is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory, but the available documentation does not support describing the 68 positions as direct DOE employee layoffs. It describes a Battelle workforce reduction affecting PNNL personnel and positions.

Why Battelle said the reduction happened

The WARN explanation, as quoted by GeekWire, cited:

  • Uncertainty about funding
  • Evolving federal mission priorities
  • A need to restructure the workforce
  • Effects on both research and operations

The account also said Battelle had attempted to avoid layoffs through reassignment, reduced work hours and furloughs. It reported that the company invoked “unforeseen business circumstances” to explain why 60 days’ notice was not provided.

Those statements establish a connection to funding and mission uncertainty, but not that every position was eliminated because of one executive order, program cancellation or particular congressional budget line.

How the event fits into the 2025 timeline

February 2025: earlier federal workforce cuts

During reporting on federal workforce reductions, Sen. Patty Murray described the PNNL impact as “a handful.” Exact local numbers were not available. That episode involved federal workforce actions and should not be combined automatically with Battelle’s later contractor reduction. See GeekWire’s February 2025 account.

Later 2025: additional warnings and undisclosed reductions

Coverage described employees being warned that reductions were possible and reported additional PNNL layoffs in September without a disclosed number.

November 18–December 1, 2025: the quantified WARN event

The 68-position figure is the clearest publicly quantified event in the available reporting. The dates indicate a termination window, not necessarily one mass dismissal on a single day.

What PNNL does and why the distinction matters

PNNL’s work spans chemistry, data analytics, Earth science, energy resilience and national security. Its official site lists regional facilities and research locations, including PNNL-Seattle, PNNL-Portland and PNNL-Sequim. The WARN account does not map each affected position to a named facility. PNNL’s institutional information is available at pnnl.gov.

A contractor reduction can reflect a change in funded work or staffing plans without proving that PNNL’s core research programs have ended. The available sources do not establish which projects, if any, were canceled, transferred or delayed.

What remains unknown

  • The names and complete job titles of affected workers
  • Whether all 68 entries represent individual employees or position eliminations in the same way
  • The exact Oregon locations
  • Whether workers received transfers, severance, benefits or outplacement assistance
  • Whether positions were permanently eliminated or work was absorbed elsewhere
  • The number of September 2025 PNNL reductions
  • The cumulative number of Battelle or PNNL reductions during 2025
  • The federal programs or contracts behind the funding uncertainty
  • Whether union-represented workers were affected
  • Any subsequent legal challenge or WARN dispute

Current status and workforce context

As reviewed on August 18, 2026, PNNL’s website listed 6,043 staff members and $1.66 billion in annual spending. A November 2025 report described PNNL as employing roughly 6,400 people the prior year. The dates, counting methods and contractor classifications may differ, so the two figures are not a reliable basis for calculating the 68 positions as a precise percentage of staff.

The 68 positions were scheduled for late 2025. The available sources do not establish whether further reductions occurred after that WARN event or what its eventual effects were on projects, staffing or the Tri-Cities economy.
