Apple’s $599 laptop includes a keyboard and trackpad, starts with 256GB of storage, has the faster A18 Pro chip, two USB-C ports and macOS. The 11-inch iPad is the better purchase when you specifically want a touch-first tablet for reading, drawing, handwritten notes, handheld media or optional cellular service. At Apple’s U.S. prices observed August 18, 2026, the comparison is $599 for a complete MacBook Neo versus about $698 for a 128GB iPad 11 with Apple’s $249 Magic Keyboard Folio.

Performance: the Neo is faster, but not a professional workstation
What benchmark results show
An early Geekbench 6 result reported 3,461 single-core, 8,668 multi-core and 31,286 Metal for the MacBook Neo, versus 2,587, 6,036 and 19,395 for the iPad 11. That works out to roughly 34% higher single-core, 44% higher multi-core and 61% higher Metal scores for the Neo. These are indicative figures from an initial result, not a complete independent test average. See the MacRumors benchmark report.
What you notice in ordinary work
The Neo has more headroom for many browser tabs, large spreadsheets, file transfers, coding tools, desktop Office applications, external storage and multi-window research. The iPad 11 is responsive for browsing, streaming, note-taking, social apps, casual games and ordinary iPadOS applications. Its lower benchmark scores do not make those tablet tasks feel slow.
The 8GB limitation
The Neo’s 8GB of unified memory is fixed. It should cover schoolwork, office documents and normal browsing, but it leaves less room for virtual machines, very large creative projects, dozens of heavy tabs, large software builds and sustained professional workloads. Apple’s cited specifications do not offer a higher-memory Neo. Buyers with those requirements should consider an M-series Mac instead.

The Neo is also not a high-end Mac. In the cited benchmark, its multi-core result was approximately comparable to the original M1 MacBook Air, while newer M-series Macs and iPads are substantially faster. Light or moderate editing is reasonable; sustained professional video, advanced 3D, demanding music production and large development projects call for a higher tier.
Apple Intelligence
Apple lists the Neo as supporting Apple Intelligence, which remains beta and depends on language, region and system requirements. The base A16 iPad does not appear on Apple’s current comparison as an Apple Intelligence device. AI availability should not be treated as a guarantee of long-term performance.
macOS versus iPadOS: choose the workflow, not just the chip
Why macOS favors the Neo
- Full desktop versions of productivity, development and creative applications.
- Conventional windows, unrestricted desktop file handling and broader browser-extension support.
- More comfortable long-form typing through an integrated keyboard and trackpad.
- Better fit for coding, file-heavy research, external displays and local storage workflows.
Apple positions the Neo for apps such as Messages, Pages, Calendar and Safari alongside third-party Mac software; see its launch announcement.

Why iPadOS favors the iPad
- Direct touch interaction, handwritten notes, drawing and PDF annotation.
- Easy handheld reading, video viewing, casual gaming and face-to-face sharing.
- Keyboard can be removed so the device returns to a genuine tablet form.
- Optional cellular connectivity for work or study away from Wi-Fi.
An iPad can replace a laptop for browser-based services and iPad-native applications. It is a poor substitute when you depend on desktop-only software, unrestricted file management, developer tools or complex wired peripherals.
Keyboard, portability and display trade-offs
The Neo’s keyboard and trackpad are integrated, so it is stable on a desk or lap and always ready for typing. The Folio gives the iPad a stand, trackpad and keyboard, but adds $249, bulk and the inconvenience of removing it for drawing or reading. A cheaper Bluetooth keyboard can reduce cost, although protection, trackpad quality, compatibility and warranty vary.
The Neo’s 13-inch screen provides more room for side-by-side windows, writing and spreadsheets. The iPad’s 11-inch panel is smaller but denser at 264 pixels per inch versus 219 ppi, which can make text and images appear slightly sharper at close range. The iPad alone is more flexible to hold; the portability comparison changes when its keyboard case is attached. Neither display is a premium HDR or high-refresh-rate panel.

Ports and battery: practical ownership differences
Only one of the Neo’s USB-C ports supports USB 3 speeds, and that port also handles charging and display output. Still, two ports plus a headphone jack are more useful for SSDs, cameras, card readers, audio equipment and monitors than the iPad’s single USB 2-class port. Apple lists support for one external 4K display at 60Hz on the Neo.
Apple rates a preproduction Neo for up to 16 hours of video streaming and 11 hours of wireless web use under controlled conditions. The iPad is commonly cited at up to 10 hours for web or video. These are manufacturer ratings, not promises of real-world runtime; brightness, workload, browser, accessories and network conditions change results. Details and test qualifications are in Apple’s technical specifications.

Best tablet and media device: iPad 11
The iPad wins for handheld reading, streaming, touch-first apps, casual games, travel and cellular use. It remains a tablet when the keyboard is removed.
Best student device: depends on the course
The Neo is the safer all-purpose choice for essays, research, spreadsheets, learning platforms and desktop applications. The iPad is better for students who annotate PDFs, write by hand, draw or already have access to a computer.
Best for handwriting and drawing: iPad 11
Touch and Apple Pencil compatibility are decisive. The Neo cannot provide either capability.
Best for multitasking and desktop applications: MacBook Neo
macOS, the larger display, integrated input devices, faster chip and better port selection make the Neo the clear choice, within its 8GB and fanless-class entry-level limits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBest value when accessories are included: MacBook Neo
At $599, the Neo already includes the components needed for laptop work and doubles the iPad’s base storage. A 128GB iPad with Apple’s Folio is approximately $698 before tax, and Pencil or hub costs can raise the total further.
When neither device is the right buy
- Choose a higher-tier M-series Mac if you need more than 8GB of memory, sustained video editing, 3D rendering, virtual machines or large software builds.
- Consider the iPad Air with M4, listed by Apple from $749, if you want iPadOS, Pencil support and substantially more performance.
- Consider the iPad Pro with M5, listed from $1,199, only if you need its premium performance and display; keyboard accessories cost extra.
Bottom line for a 2026 purchase
If you want a laptop, buy the MacBook Neo. Its faster A18 Pro, 256GB starting storage, included keyboard and macOS deliver the stronger complete-computing value at current U.S. prices. If you want a tablet that can occasionally act like a laptop, buy the iPad 11—and budget honestly for the keyboard, Pencil, storage and cellular options your use case requires.
