Verdict: Microsoft’s 13-inch Surface Laptop launched as a cheaper alternative to the MacBook Air, but Apple’s $599 MacBook Neo changed the affordability equation. In the United States, as of August 2026, the Neo is the lowest-cost choice by a wide margin. The Surface can still justify its price with 16GB of memory, a touchscreen, Windows compatibility and a 3:2 design; the $1,099 MacBook Air M5 is the closer premium comparison.
Which Apple laptop should you compare with the Surface?
“Apple” is not one price point. This comparison covers Apple’s two relevant 13-inch-class laptops and the Microsoft model in the U.S. market:

What the Surface gives you for the extra money
16GB of memory
The Surface starts with twice the Neo’s memory. That is useful for many browser tabs, simultaneous office applications and workloads you expect to keep using for several years. It does not automatically make the Surface faster in every application, but it gives Windows users more headroom than an 8GB entry-level Mac.
A touchscreen and taller workspace
The Surface’s 3:2 screen provides more vertical space for documents and web pages, and it accepts touch input. Microsoft says this model does not support pen input or Surface Pen compatibility. The Neo’s display is sharper and rated at 500 nits, but it is not touch-enabled.
Windows hardware and software fit
Windows 11 is the practical reason to choose the Surface for many buyers. It supports Windows-only business software, familiar PC peripherals and a broader PC-gaming environment. The laptop uses an ARM-based Snapdragon processor, however. Native ARM applications and emulation cover many common programs, while older business software, specialist engineering or medical tools, VPN clients, printer drivers, anti-cheat systems, virtualization tools and legacy plug-ins can still require a compatibility check. Microsoft’s feature and support page points to its Windows Arm compatibility guidance.
Battery and compact design
Microsoft’s figures are controlled estimates: up to 23 hours of local video and 16 hours of active web use. A reported independent comparison measured 17 hours 14 minutes for the Surface and 13 hours 28 minutes for the Neo. Windows Central attributes the benchmark and battery results to testing by Tom’s Hardware and its own comparison; results vary with firmware, brightness, software and power settings.

- Power that lasts all day – With 20 hours of battery life[3], the new Surface Laptop powers through your entire day, so you can create, work and stream from morning to night without reaching for a charger.
- Work at the speed of your ideas – Built with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite (12 Core) processors, Surface Laptop delivers fast, AI‑accelerated performance—making it the most powerful Surface laptop for everything from multitasking to demanding workloads.
- The ports you need – Charge on-the-go, transfer data fast, or create the ultimate desktop set up with two USB-C / USB4[4] ports.
- Built-in AI Companion – Work smarter, create freely, and communicate with confidence—Copilot[5] on Windows 11 is always there to help.
Where the Surface compromises
Price and storage
The 13-inch Surface’s launch price was $899 on May 20, 2025, but later reporting put the starting price at $1,149. Microsoft lists UFS storage, not the removable SSD design found in some larger Surface Laptop models. Do not assume the 13-inch model has the same storage upgrade or serviceability options.
Display resolution
Its 1920×1280 panel is practical for documents but less detailed than the Neo’s 2408×1506 display. The Neo also specifies 500-nit brightness. Microsoft’s own announcement describes the Surface display as full HD, so the exact resolution is more informative than a generic “high-resolution” label.
Ports and charging
Microsoft’s store specification lists two USB-C/USB 3.2 ports. A separate support diagram appears to show USB-A, so verify the ports on the regional consumer model you intend to order. USB-C Power Delivery requires at least 40W; Microsoft recommends its 45W USB-C charger, while the listing says a power supply is included.
Why the MacBook Neo remains the affordability winner
Lowest upfront cost
At $599, the Neo is Apple’s least expensive laptop. Its $499 education price makes the gap even larger for eligible students and educators. For browsing, streaming, writing, studying and standard productivity, the price advantage is direct and substantial.
Rank #3
- With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution
- The 13.5" 2256 x 1504 screen provides a great movie watching experience
- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
Sharper, brighter display and Apple integration
The Neo has a 13-inch 2408×1506 display rated at 500 nits, an aluminum enclosure and macOS integration with iPhone, iCloud and AirPods. Apple rates battery life at up to 16 hours of video streaming. It supports one external display up to 4K at 60Hz while retaining the built-in screen.
The trade-offs behind the low price
- 8GB of unified memory can constrain heavy multitasking and long-term demanding use.
- There is no touchscreen.
- One USB-C port is USB 3 and the other is USB 2, so connectivity is not equivalent to two high-speed ports.
- macOS is unsuitable for Windows-only applications and some PC gaming or peripheral workflows.
- Its external-display support is less flexible than the Air M5’s.
How the MacBook Air M5 changes the premium comparison
The 13-inch MacBook Air M5 starts at $1,099 with 16GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD. It has a 13.6-inch 2560×1664, 500-nit display with P3 wide color, MagSafe 3, two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports and support for up to two external displays in supported configurations. Apple rates it for up to 18 hours of video streaming and 15 hours of wireless web use. Specifications are listed by Apple here.
Against the Air M5, the Surface may be cheaper if you find it below $1,099, and it adds touch input, Windows compatibility and a taller 3:2 screen. The Air starts with twice the Neo’s storage, Thunderbolt 4 and Apple’s mature silicon software ecosystem. Neither is universally better: the operating system, current sale price and workload decide the value.

Microsoft’s launch claim that the Surface outperformed the MacBook Air M3 refers specifically to a Cinebench 2024 multi-core comparison. It does not prove superiority in every application, graphics workload or battery scenario.
Rank #4
- Touch Display: The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 features a 13-inch touchscreen
- Processor: It is powered by an Intel Evo i5-1235U processor
- RAM and Storage: The Surface 5 comes with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD
- OS and Connectivity: Running on the Windows 11 Home operating system, it offers Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and USB connectivity options
- Resolution: The laptop has an LCD display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels
In the Windows Central comparison, attributed to Tom’s Hardware testing and Windows Central’s review work, the Surface scored 2,832 single-core and 14,557 multi-core in Geekbench 6, versus 3,535 and 8,920 for the Neo. Cinebench 2024 results were 123 single-core and 961 multi-core for the Surface, versus 132 and 360 for the Neo. The Neo led the reported 3DMark Steel Nomad graphics test, 369 to 229. Benchmark versions and test methods materially affect these numbers.
Which laptop should you buy?
Choose the MacBook Neo for the lowest price
Buy the Neo if your priority is paying as little as possible and your work is mainly web, video, documents and standard apps. It is the clear affordability choice, provided 8GB memory, macOS and its port and display limits fit your needs.
Choose the Surface for a compact Windows PC
Choose the Surface when you need Windows-only software or peripherals, want a touchscreen and 3:2 workspace, or consider 16GB memory more important than the lowest purchase price. A sale near its original $899 launch price makes the value case substantially stronger than a $1,149 starting price.
Choose the MacBook Air M5 for a premium Mac
Choose the Air M5 when you want 16GB memory and 512GB storage at the base configuration, Thunderbolt 4, MagSafe, broader external-display support or demanding creative and development capabilities. It is not the budget option, but it is a more direct premium alternative to the Surface.

Students and families
Check eligibility before comparing education prices: Apple lists $499 for the Neo and $999 for the Air M5, while Microsoft’s launch price for the Surface was $899. Required school software should take priority over a small specification or price difference.
Bottom line
Apple now wins the absolute affordability contest because the $599 MacBook Neo undercuts both the Surface’s reported $1,149 price and the MacBook Air M5’s $1,099 starting price. Microsoft’s 13-inch Surface Laptop remains a credible value purchase for Windows users who will use its 16GB memory, touchscreen, 3:2 display and compact design. Call it better equipped for some buyers—not cheaper than Apple overall.
