The deal report is available at StartupNews.fyi. Because the report is dated February, check the live seller page for availability, taxes, platform, activation method and the identity of the actual seller before paying.
What the under-$100 Office deal actually was
The reported offer was for Office Home & Business 2024, not automatically Office Home 2024, Microsoft 365, Office Professional Plus or Office LTSC. The article published February 27, 2026, listed a $99.97 sale price against a stated $249.99 MSRP and described a one-time purchase for PC or Mac.
Nothing in that dated report proves the same price remains available on October 1, 2026. Treat it as unconfirmed unless the checkout page currently displays the offer. Before comparing prices, record:

- the current seller and whether it is an authorized Microsoft retailer;
- the exact edition and operating-system support;
- whether a coupon, membership or new-customer condition is required;
- taxes, fees and the final checkout total;
- whether you receive a retail product key, a boxed copy or an account-based activation; and
- the refund and replacement-key policy.
Which Office edition are you buying?
Edition names are not interchangeable. Office Home 2024 is Microsoft’s one-time home-or-school product for one PC or Mac; its official listing is at Microsoft.com. The reported promotion instead named Office Home & Business 2024, which is the edition a buyer should investigate if Outlook or business use matters.
Confirm the live offer’s application list rather than relying on a headline. Check specifically for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote, and verify whether the license permits your intended commercial use. A listing labelled “Professional Plus,” “LTSC,” “volume,” “MAK,” “KMS,” “MSDN” or “education” is not automatically a normal consumer retail product.

What “lifetime license” means
Microsoft calls Office 2024 a one-time purchase: you pay once for the licensed version on the permitted computer. Microsoft’s comparison explains that one-time purchases do not receive new feature upgrades and that the next major release requires another purchase. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 supplies current apps, new features, security updates and bug fixes while subscribed: Microsoft’s lifecycle comparison. Neither option is universally cheaper. Your result depends on the verified Office price, years of use, number of people and devices, value of OneDrive, and whether you would later buy another Office release.
How to test whether a cheap key is legitimate
- Identify the legal seller. A marketplace listing alone does not establish authorization.
- Match the license type. Look for an explicitly described retail consumer license, not a volume, developer, school or enterprise entitlement.
- Use your own Microsoft account. Be wary if the seller supplies a pre-created account instead of a redeemable key.
- Check platform and device limits. “PC or Mac” language must match the exact edition and activation terms.
- Read transfer terms. Reinstalling through the same account is not proof that you have a legal right to move the license to another computer.
- Check support and refunds. The seller should identify itself, provide normal activation instructions and offer a meaningful remedy if the key is blocked or already redeemed.

What happens if activation fails?
- Sign in to the Microsoft account you intend to keep using.
- Confirm that the key and edition match the purchase.
- Redeem and install through Microsoft’s official flow, not an unofficial activator.
- Remove conflicting trial or Microsoft 365 installations if setup detects another edition.
- Check whether the key was previously redeemed, region-locked or limited to another platform.
- Contact the seller before trying any workaround; request a refund if it cannot supply a valid retail license.
- Contact Microsoft Support if the key appears duplicated, blocked or misrepresented.
Never use KMS activators, cracks or “license patchers.” They can introduce malware, violate licensing terms and leave an activation that later stops working.

Buy Office 2024 when
- you need desktop Word, Excel and PowerPoint on one computer;
- you prefer one payment and stable features;
- you do not need a large cloud-storage bundle or continual feature releases; and
- the seller and retail license are clearly verifiable.
Choose Microsoft 365 when
- you work across several computers, tablets or phones;
- multiple household members need Office;
- you want current features, cloud storage and collaboration; or
- you use subscription-based AI or productivity capabilities.
Use free web apps when
Basic browser-based Word, Excel and PowerPoint are enough. Microsoft makes these web apps available free with a Microsoft account at Microsoft 365 for the web, but desktop features and offline capability are more limited.

Choose LibreOffice when
You want a free desktop suite and can accept occasional formatting differences in complex Microsoft files. Download it from LibreOffice.org.
Bottom line for the $99.97 claim
At a genuinely verified price below $100, a legitimate Office Home & Business 2024 retail license could suit someone who wants desktop Office on one computer for several years. The February 27, 2026 report alone cannot establish that the price is still live. If the seller, edition, activation route or transfer rights are unclear, the apparent saving is not worth the risk of a revoked or unusable key; buy through Microsoft or choose Microsoft 365 or a free alternative instead.
