In 2026, you generally choose between a flexible GPU computer for selected proof-of-work coins, a purpose-built Bitcoin ASIC, hosted mining, or buying cryptocurrency directly. Ethereum Mainnet mining is no longer possible: Ethereum replaced proof of work with proof of stake, and its mining documentation is now historical (Ethereum documentation).
Build only after calculating your all-in electricity cost, confirming safe power and ventilation, and accepting that mining revenue is variable rather than guaranteed income.
What crypto mining actually does
Proof-of-work networks make miners compete with computation for the right to add a block. A miner repeatedly hashes block-header data; the successful miner may receive a block subsidy and transaction fees. Bitcoin’s developer guide explains the process and the role of specialized ASIC hardware (Bitcoin mining documentation).
- Hash rate: attempted hashes per second.
- Difficulty: a network setting that adjusts, so a machine’s expected output changes over time.
- Gross revenue: estimated coin or payout value before electricity, fees, repairs, taxes and depreciation.
Solo mining, pools and hash-power services
Solo mining keeps the entire reward but can involve extremely long waits. A pool combines miners’ work and distributes payouts according to accepted shares and its rules. Services such as NiceHash may pay you in Bitcoin for selling hash power; that is not necessarily direct Bitcoin mining. Pool payouts are estimates subject to thresholds, fees and changing network conditions.

Is mining worth it in 2026?
Electricity is usually the first deciding factor. Use the meter rate on your bill, including delivery charges where relevant, rather than a promotional energy price.
Daily energy use = watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × uptime fraction Daily electricity cost = daily energy use × electricity price per kWh Net daily result = gross revenue − electricity − pool/software fees − cooling − maintenance − other costs Simple payback = total upfront cost ÷ estimated net daily result
Payback is not a forecast. Coin prices, difficulty, rewards, uptime, hardware failures and resale values can change. Bitmain’s calculator uses current network difficulty and warns that actual revenue may differ (Bitmain calculator).
Illustration: a Bitcoin ASIC’s electricity bill
Bitmain lists the air-cooled Antminer S21 XP at 270 TH/s and 3,645 W, with typical efficiency of 13.5 J/TH. Continuous operation uses about 87.48 kWh per day (3.645 kW × 24). Electricity alone would be approximately:
| Rate | Daily electricity cost |
|---|---|
| $0.06/kWh | $5.25 |
| $0.10/kWh | $8.75 |
| $0.15/kWh | $13.12 |
| $0.20/kWh | $17.50 |
These are operating-cost illustrations, not earnings predictions; cooling losses, pool fees, taxes and depreciation are excluded. Specifications and power can vary from typical values (Bitmain S21 XP specifications).

GPU rig or ASIC miner?
| Factor | GPU rig | Bitcoin ASIC |
|---|---|---|
| Target | Various GPU-mineable proof-of-work algorithms | Bitcoin’s SHA-256 algorithm |
| Flexibility | High; cards can be repurposed or sold | Low; designed for a narrow algorithm |
| Deployment | Requires PC assembly, drivers and tuning | Appliance-like setup, but demanding power and ventilation |
| Noise and heat | Significant; depends on cards and fans | Industrial-level heat and noise |
| Resale | Usually broader non-mining market | Highly dependent on mining economics |
| Best fit | Learning, experimentation, existing GPUs | Low-cost power and a suitable Bitcoin installation |
A GPU can technically calculate Bitcoin hashes, but it is not economically competitive with Bitcoin ASICs. Conversely, a GPU-mineable coin is not automatically profitable.

Choosing a coin or algorithm
Do not look for a permanent “best coin.” Compare the algorithm, compatible hardware, current difficulty, block reward and fees, coin liquidity, pool availability, payout minimum, pool fee, wallet support, electricity consumption and resale value. ASIC competition can quickly change a GPU coin’s economics. Ethereum Mainnet should not appear in a current mining plan; its proof-of-work mining ended (Ethereum mining algorithms).
Parts for a beginner GPU rig
Motherboard, CPU, RAM and storage
Choose a motherboard that can reliably support your intended number of GPUs, risers and PCIe address space. BIOS labels such as “Above 4G Decoding” vary by manufacturer. A compatible entry-level CPU is normally enough because GPUs perform the mining work. Modest RAM and a small SSD generally suffice for the operating system. A full blockchain node has different storage needs, and running a node is not the same as mining (Ethereum node documentation).
GPUs
Compare hash rate on the specific algorithm, tuned wall power, hashes per watt, memory capacity, warranty, cooling design, driver stability, used price and resale value. Historical Ethash charts from before Ethereum’s transition are not current profitability evidence.

Risers and power supplies
Use reputable, insulated PCIe risers. Inspect USB leads and connectors; do not use damaged parts or improvised adapters. Never assume a SATA power lead is suitable for a high-load riser. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance on powering each GPU and riser, avoid daisy-chaining beyond cable ratings, and never mix modular cables from different PSU brands or models.
Size the PSU from measured or specified wall draw, with substantial continuous headroom and enough native PCIe outputs. Use approved cables, properly rated outlets and circuits, and consider an electrician for a dedicated circuit.

Frame, network and cooling
Use a rigid open-air frame, clear intake-to-exhaust airflow, practical dust filtration, temperature monitoring and spacing between cards. Keep the rig off carpet and away from curtains, cardboard, water and sleeping areas. Nearly all electrical energy becomes heat.
Calculate your complete cost before buying
- Hardware, shipping, tax and import charges
- Hash rate and wall draw at intended settings
- Electricity rate and realistic uptime
- Pool and mining-software fees
- Cooling, ventilation and internet costs
- Electrical work, replacement fans, risers and cables
- Coin price, difficulty, rewards and fee assumptions
- Resale value, depreciation and taxes
Use a power meter where possible. Gross calculator revenue is not profit, and a small margin can disappear with one outage, failed fan or difficulty increase.
How to assemble a GPU rig safely
Before assembly
- Select the algorithm and hardware.
- Record your actual all-in electricity rate.
- Confirm motherboard, CPU, RAM, SSD, PSU and riser compatibility.
- Check circuit capacity, ventilation, noise and heat constraints.
- Create a wallet and write its seed phrase offline.
- Select a reputable pool and save its official connection details.
Physical assembly and testing
- Install the CPU, cooler, RAM and SSD on the motherboard.
- Mount the board on proper frame standoffs.
- Connect the 24-pin motherboard and CPU power cables.
- Connect the documented power-button header or start method.
- Install one GPU directly in the primary PCIe slot and connect its power.
- Boot into BIOS or the operating system and verify recognition.
- Shut down; add one riser and GPU at a time.
- Label cards and cables, then recheck every connector.
- Boot with the minimum configuration before adding more cards.
A successful test reaches BIOS or the operating system, lists each GPU, remains stable under a short load, and has no unusually hot connector. If a new card causes failure, remove it and test its riser, USB cable, power cable, PCIe slot, driver recognition and PSU load.
Install software, wallet and pool access
Operating-system choices
- Windows: familiar for desktop users and convenient for one or a few GPUs, but updates and driver changes can reboot or disrupt mining.
- Linux: good for headless control and predictable services, with more driver and kernel troubleshooting.
- Dedicated mining OS: can simplify multi-GPU deployment, remote management and watchdogs; verify current hardware support, fees and plan limits before subscribing.
Use current documentation for the selected miner and operating system rather than copying commands intended for an older release.
Wallet and pool safety
- Use a wallet you control; do not leave balances indefinitely on a pool or exchange.
- Confirm the address and network, then make a small test payout.
- Never enter a seed phrase into mining software, a website or support chat.
- Download miners and firmware only from official or established sources.
- Check pool URLs carefully and enable two-factor authentication where available.
- Record pool fees and minimum payout rules.
Tune, monitor and maintain
Start at stock settings. Change one power limit, clock or memory setting at a time and watch wall draw, temperature, fan speed, accepted shares, rejected shares, hardware errors, uptime and pool-side effective hash rate. A pool’s reported rate is averaged and may differ from instantaneous miner output.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhen an ASIC is the better choice
An ASIC is a different installation category, not simply a GPU rig with more cards. The S21 XP specification lists 220–277 V AC, a 20 A single-phase input, RJ45 Ethernet and approximately 76 dBA under maximum fan conditions; Bitmain lists an adapted AC output requirement of 4,000 W (S21 XP requirements). That means professional electrical review, wired networking, robust ventilation and tolerance for continuous noise may be necessary. Other S21 models have different specifications (S21 specifications).
Choose an ASIC only when you have suitable power, ventilation, an acceptable electricity rate and a plan for algorithm lock-in and depreciation. Do not substitute extension cords, undersized conductors, ungrounded adapters or improvised connections for proper electrical work.
Troubleshoot common failures
Nothing powers on
- Check the PSU switch, AC cable and outlet.
- Reseat the 24-pin and CPU power connectors.
- Verify the power-button header and check for a tripped PSU or circuit.
- Inspect for a misplaced motherboard standoff or short.
One GPU is missing
- Check GPU and riser power.
- Replace the riser USB cable.
- Reseat the GPU and try another PCIe slot.
- Review BIOS PCIe settings and drivers.
- Check PSU capacity, then test the GPU and riser separately.
Crashes, low hash rate or excess heat
Return tuning to stock, test one GPU, monitor wall draw and temperatures, and add cards gradually. Investigate loose connectors, defective risers, driver conflicts, memory errors and thermal throttling. Advertised hash rates assume particular algorithms and conditions; they are not guaranteed. Network difficulty affects expected earnings, not the local hash-rate number.
The pool shows no earnings
Verify the wallet address, worker name, pool URL and port, accepted shares, payout threshold, clock synchronization, firewall rules and network. Confirm the receiving address uses the correct network.

- You cannot manage heat, noise, dust or downtime.
- Your plan depends on a fixed payback date.
- You would be better served by direct ownership of the asset.
Alternatives to home mining
Buy cryptocurrency directly
Direct purchase avoids hardware, electricity, noise and maintenance, though it still carries market and custody risk.
Hosted mining
Hosting can remove home heat and electrical work. Compare the physical machine, electricity rate, contract term, uptime, repairs, insurance, custody, withdrawal rules, jurisdiction and termination terms. An undisclosed provider adds substantial counterparty risk.
Run a node for learning
A full node can teach network operation and verification, but it does not pay mining rewards by itself.
Legal, tax and household checks
Mining rules vary by country, state, municipality, utility, landlord and building type. Income recognition, later disposal, depreciation, sales tax, zoning, noise and power-use rules are jurisdiction-specific. Check current local requirements and consult a qualified tax professional; no single country’s treatment is universal.
The Bottom Line
Build a GPU rig for learning or flexible experimentation, and consider an ASIC only when your electricity, wiring, ventilation and noise plan are genuinely suitable. Calculate net operating cost at your own rate before buying; if the margin is narrow or the installation is unsafe, do not mine.
