But it did not automatically restore Starlink’s rejected federal subsidy or prove that the company received special treatment. Through August 18, 2026, the clearest documented gains are regulatory: approvals for direct-to-cell operations and authorization for an additional 7,500 Gen2 satellites.
What the 2024 article predicted
The November 15, 2024 Tech Times article argued that Starlink could benefit from federal broadband funding, a more favorable FCC, access to spectrum and satellite-network expansion. It also pointed to Elon Musk’s close relationship with the incoming administration. The article drew on analysis from The Motley Fool distributed through Nasdaq, so its forecasts were possibilities, not official policy commitments.
In retrospect, the broad idea of a more favorable policy environment was plausible, and network expansion became concrete. The idea that a Trump victory would automatically deliver a subsidy or government contract was not established. Political access, policy alignment and a procurement award are different things: the first two can shape the environment, but they do not prove that a specific decision was improperly influenced.
The rejected $885.5 million subsidy was not restored
In 2020, SpaceX won an FCC Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF) auction award of $885,509,638 over 10 years to provide 100/20 Mbps low-latency service to 642,925 locations in 35 states. The award was not a guaranteed payment: the FCC had to approve Starlink’s long-form application. In 2022, the FCC Wireline Competition Bureau rejected it, finding that the company had not demonstrated the technical and financial ability to serve the specific locations. The FCC reaffirmed the denial in 2024. The FCC decision explains the rejection and the award’s scope.

That made speculation about a reversal understandable, but not a sound conclusion. On November 21, 2024, incoming FCC Chair Brendan Carr reportedly said reinstating the subsidy was unlikely, according to Reuters reporting carried by Investing.com. The evidence available through August 18, 2026 does not show that the RDOF award was restored.
BEAD rules could widen the path, not guarantee Starlink funding
In March 2025, the Commerce Department said it would revise the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program to remove requirements it called burdensome and use a technology-neutral, outcome-focused approach emphasizing the lowest cost to taxpayers. The department’s announcement created a potential opening for satellite providers, including Starlink, especially in places where building fiber is costly or slow.
But technology-neutral rules do not equal an award. Providers still have to meet program requirements for technical performance, finances, coverage and accountability. Satellite capacity is shared across users in a service area, and performance can vary with congestion; public funding may favor proposals that can make stronger commitments about capacity and reliability. The policy shift could make satellite bids more competitive in some locations, but the available evidence does not establish that Starlink received BEAD funding.

Direct-to-cell approvals were a concrete regulatory gain
In November 2024, the FCC authorized SpaceX to use T-Mobile’s PCS G Block spectrum for supplemental coverage from space with all 7,500 then-authorized Gen2 satellites, subject to conditions. The order also authorized certain direct-to-cell frequencies outside the United States. The FCC authorization is the clearest early example of regulatory permission relevant to Starlink’s expansion.
Direct-to-cell links satellites with compatible devices or equipment through mobile-operator partnerships; it is not the same as a Starlink dish delivering home broadband. Starlink says its business system is designed for CAT-1, CAT-1 Bis and CAT-4 modems and is offered through approved global partners. Its Direct to Cell information describes the technical and partner model. Availability depends on local regulatory approval, participating operators and compatible equipment. Capacity and service type also matter: direct-to-cell should not be assumed to provide full broadband speeds to every phone. Early uses can focus on messaging, emergency links, IoT or other lower-bandwidth needs.
The later satellite authorization was permission, not deployment
The November 2024 FCC order authorized 7,500 Gen2 satellites and deferred consideration of a further 22,488 proposed in SpaceX’s broader application. On January 9, 2026, the FCC authorized another 7,500 Gen2 satellites, bringing the authorized Gen2 total to 15,000. The new authorization covers orbital shells at approximately 340 to 485 kilometers and additional direct-to-cell capabilities, subject to conditions. The January 2026 FCC decision sets out the terms.

- High-Speed, Low-Latency Internet: Stream HD content, video conference, or work remotely with confidence.
- Ideal for Rural and Remote Areas: Perfect for homes, cabins, RVs, boats, and off-grid setups where wired internet isn’t available.
An authorization is regulatory permission to construct, deploy and operate under specified conditions; it does not mean all 15,000 satellites are already in orbit or serving customers. The FCC’s oversight still encompasses issues such as spectrum interference, coordination with NASA for satellites below 400 kilometers, orbital safety and protection of terrestrial networks. International operations also require authorization in relevant jurisdictions.
Starlink’s reported commercial expansion
SpaceX’s 2025 progress report said Starlink added more than 4.6 million active customers during 2025 and expanded service to 35 additional countries, territories and markets. SpaceX also reported completing deployment of the first-generation Direct to Cell constellation, with more than 650 satellites launched over 18 months, and said more than 12 million people had connected through Direct to Cell at least once. These are company-reported figures, not independently audited measurements.

Federal contracts remain an opportunity, not a proven takeover
The Federal Aviation Administration illustrates why reports about government business need careful wording. Starlink terminals were reportedly being tested for possible use in FAA communications infrastructure. Bloomberg Government described Verizon’s existing FAA contract as vulnerable to changes, while the Associated Press reported Verizon said it knew of no confirmed amendment or termination. See Bloomberg Government’s account and the Associated Press report.
Satellite links could be useful for remote aviation facilities or as resilient backup connectivity. Replacing or supplementing a large government communications contract, however, involves procurement rules, security, interoperability and continuity-of-service requirements. The reporting does not establish that SpaceX took over Verizon’s contract. Also distinguish Starlink broadband from other SpaceX businesses: a launch-services or defense contract, for example, is not automatically a Starlink customer award.

For rural broadband customers
Political support or satellite approvals do not by themselves mean lower bills, free equipment, immediate service everywhere or guaranteed faster speeds. Starlink service depends on address, plan, equipment, sky visibility, congestion and local rules. Starlink says performance varies by location, time of day and plan priority; advertised speeds are not guaranteed. Its U.S. plan page displayed Residential Lite from $75 per month and Residential from $130 per month in the pricing information reviewed for this update, while a separate service-plan page showed different starting prices. Starlink says prices vary by market, currency, taxes and local conditions, and some offers may be limited to certain addresses. Check the exact address and current terms; the company’s pricing guidance explains the variation.

For a home with affordable fiber, cable or capable fixed wireless, a terrestrial connection may provide better latency, capacity or value. Starlink is more compelling where those options are unavailable or unreliable, or as a backup. A difficult installation, obstructed view of the sky or local congestion can weaken the case.
For investors and industry watchers
The political story is best treated as a possible tailwind, not an independent financial result. Regulatory approvals can expand the addressable market, while access to public funding or contracts would require specific, verifiable awards. The scale of the opportunity depends on deployment, capacity, competition and continued regulatory permissions. Musk’s political prominence may attract scrutiny and customer backlash as well as access; any deterioration in his relationship with Trump could change the political backdrop without undoing the underlying commercial or technical case.
Quick Recap
What remains uncertain
- Whether Starlink will receive BEAD awards under revised rules; policy eligibility is not a funding award.
- Whether any future FCC decision reflects ordinary technical and public-interest review or preferential treatment; political proximity alone does not establish favoritism.
- Whether the FAA contract will be changed, supplemented or awarded to SpaceX; the cited reporting describes testing and uncertainty, not a confirmed transfer.
- How quickly the newly authorized satellites will be built, launched and put into service; authorization does not establish deployment timing.
- How direct-to-cell capabilities will vary by country, partner, device and service type as approvals and commercial offerings develop.
