What “Active Directory certification” means in 2026
Active Directory usually means Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS): the Windows Server service that manages users, computers, groups, domains, forests, authentication, authorization and Group Policy. It is different from Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory), Microsoft’s cloud identity service; Microsoft Entra Domain Services, a managed domain service; and Active Directory Certificate Services, a Windows PKI platform.
| Credential route | What it validates | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Applied Skills: Administer Active Directory Domain Services | Interactive lab performance covering domain controllers, topology, objects, Group Policy and security | Focused AD DS validation |
| Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate | Broader Windows Server and hybrid administration | Windows administrators |
| Identity and Access Administrator Associate (SC-300) | Entra identity, authentication, governance and hybrid scenarios | Cloud or hybrid identity specialists |
Exam-transition warning: Microsoft says AZ-800 and AZ-801 retire on September 30, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Central Time, with the Windows Server certification moving to replacement exam AZ-802. Confirm the live requirements on Microsoft Learn before booking an exam: AZ-800, AZ-801 and the certification page.

Course-by-course guidance
1. Microsoft Learn identity infrastructure
This is the strongest no-cost starting point for forests, domains, sites, domain controllers, OUs, users, groups and hybrid identity. It uses Microsoft terminology and supports later Applied Skills or Windows Server study, but you still need a lab and assessment.
2. Microsoft Learn AD DS path
Choose this after basic Windows Server exposure. It goes deeper into domain controllers, security principals, multi-site, multi-domain and multi-forest environments and domain-based Group Policy. Microsoft lists Windows Server administration, AD DS concepts and basic PowerShell as prerequisites.
3. Applied Skills assessment
This is the closest current Microsoft credential to a focused AD administrator assessment. Prepare for deployment and management of domain controllers, topology, AD objects, GPOs and security. It is performance-based, not merely a course-completion badge.
4. Udemy Active Directory on Windows Server
The captured page showed about 50,000-plus students, a 4.6/5 rating, 63 lectures and US$16.99. Those figures are dynamic. Coverage includes FSMO roles, RODCs, sites, replication, migrations, PowerShell deployment and AD Certificate Services. Because the material is based on Server 2016, cross-check Server 2025 procedures and current exam objectives.
Rank #2
5. Udemy Windows Server 2022 Administration
This is a better first purchase for someone who lacks DNS, DHCP, file services and general Windows Server knowledge. It is less efficient if you only need AD DS. The captured category page showed about US$12.99, a promotional signal rather than a guaranteed price.
6. Udemy AD & Group Policy Lab
Use it as a practice supplement when GPO work is your priority. The captured listing showed roughly seven hours and 78 lectures and about US$119.99. Before paying, confirm whether the lab uses downloadable virtual machines, a hosted environment or demonstrations, and which Server version it requires.
7. LinkedIn Learning Server 2025 course
This is a concise way to see AD DS installation and configuration on Windows Server 2025, including objects and hierarchy differences. The one-month free trial was displayed when captured. Treat its shareable certificate as evidence of completion, not Microsoft certification.
8. LinkedIn Learning Group Policy
Choose this for a targeted GPO refresher after learning AD fundamentals. It covers Server 2022 implementation but cannot replace training in domain design, DNS, replication, recovery or security.
9. CBT Nuggets Server 2025 administration
The advertised syllabus includes account and group management, WMI filters, security filtering, OU design, delegation, replication, trusts, backup and recovery, authoritative restores, AD Recycle Bin and Protected Users. Virtual labs are a major advantage. The captured page showed a free week and a US$599 figure without a clear billing period, so verify checkout terms.
10. Coursera Windows Server Management and Security
This option combines accounts, authentication, provisioning, Group Policy, enterprise security and AD in a more academic format. It showed four assignments and a shareable certificate. The reported 97% learner-likes figure is platform data, not an independent quality test.
11. Coursera catalog
Search results include Windows Server 2025 Administration Essentials, hybrid AD deployments, Entra courses and broader systems-administration programs. Compare instructor, labs, update date and provider because the catalog is not one standardized curriculum.
Build a safe Active Directory lab
Watching videos is not enough for operational skill. Use Microsoft evaluation and licensing terms when creating a lab, and never experiment on a production domain.
- Deploy a Windows Server virtual machine and a separate Windows client VM.
- Install AD DS, promote the server to a domain controller and configure integrated DNS.
- Create OUs, users, security groups, computers and service accounts.
- Join the client to the domain and test logon, name resolution and time synchronization.
- Create, link and troubleshoot a GPO; test inheritance, security filtering and delegation.
- Add a second domain controller to observe replication, then practice backup, restore and account recovery.
- Automate repetitive work with PowerShell and deliberately diagnose DNS, authentication, replication and GPO failures.
Representative lab commands (not a complete installation recipe) include:
Install-WindowsFeature AD-Domain-Services -IncludeManagementToolsInstall-ADDSForest -DomainName "corp.example"Get-ADDomainandGet-ADForestGet-ADUser -Filter *andGet-GPO -Alldcdiagandrepadmin /replsummary
Promotion, DNS, firewall rules, permissions and reboots affect results; verify syntax against current Microsoft documentation before using commands.
