Perplexity can take a U.S. shopper from an open-ended question to product research and, for eligible listings, checkout without leaving the chatbot. That makes it a genuine conversational-commerce service—not just a search-results widget. But it does not replace Amazon’s entire retail system: product eligibility is limited, merchants fulfill orders and handle returns, and Amazon remains stronger in catalog depth, delivery, account history, and post-purchase support.
What Perplexity Shopping actually does
Perplexity Shopping combines natural-language product searches, AI-generated recommendations, product cards, cross-site product and review research, comparisons, and—in selected cases—checkout inside Perplexity. You can ask for “sofas under $500,” “a laptop for video editing under $1,000,” or “sensitive-skin products for a gift” instead of starting with a retailer’s search box.
The important distinction is between a recommendation and a transaction. Some results only explain products or link to a retailer. Some eligible cards carry an Instant Buy label that enables checkout inside Perplexity. Perplexity says its eligible product library is still expanding, so Shopping is not a universal marketplace. Perplexity’s Instant Buy documentation describes the current U.S. system.
How Instant Buy works
- Open Perplexity and ask a product-oriented question.
- Review the product cards and compare the options.
- Select a product marked Instant Buy.
- Enter or confirm shipping and payment details. Perplexity can save checkout details for later purchases.
- Perplexity sends the order and payment information to the participating merchant.
- The merchant processes and fulfills the order.
- Find the purchase later at perplexity.ai/settings/purchases.
“One-stop” therefore describes the research-to-checkout interface, not ownership of inventory or delivery. The retailer—not Perplexity—controls availability, shipping, delivery dates, fulfillment, product support, and returns. Perplexity directs customers to the brand or retailer for those issues. Its help page also says payment is sent to the merchant.

Who can use Instant Buy?
As of the current help-center guidance, Instant Buy is available to users in the United States, and Pro Search is not required. Pro Search may produce more detailed or tailored recommendations, but it is not a prerequisite. Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max users are excluded from the stated availability.
This is different from earlier “Shop Like a Pro” or “Buy With Pro” descriptions that limited shopping to U.S.-based Pro subscribers. Those older materials should not be treated as the current access rule: current Pro perks documentation and the older Shop Like a Pro page reflect different stages of the product.

Which products and merchants are eligible?
Not every product card is purchasable in-chat. A result may be informational, may link out to a retailer, or may support Instant Buy. Eligibility depends on the merchant’s technical compatibility and the product itself. Perplexity says it prioritizes categories it believes are popular while expanding the library.
Its PayPal help page gives Wayfair and Abercrombie & Fitch as examples and says eligible products also come from thousands of merchants using BigCommerce, Shopware, and Wix eCommerce. That is an example of the current ecosystem, not a complete or permanent merchant directory. Eligible checkouts may offer Pay with PayPal; a 2025 Black Friday/Cyber Monday promotion on the help page should not be read as a current offer. See the PayPal flow.

How Perplexity ranks products
Perplexity says its product ranking uses criteria analogous to answer-engine ranking, including relevance and ratings. Past searches, interactions, and saved preferences can affect recommendations. It also says merchants with fuller information—such as current availability, reviews, price, and specifications—are more likely to be recommended. For retailers, complete and accurate feeds may therefore improve visibility in AI-mediated shopping, although that is an implication of the stated criteria, not a guaranteed ranking advantage.
Perplexity says advertisers cannot pay to place products in its related-products section and that those listings are selected algorithmically using relevance and ratings. That is a company disclosure, not an independent audit of every commercial surface. It does not establish that every present or future Perplexity recommendation is free of commercial influence, nor does a non-sponsored label mean the top result is objectively the best product.
Relevance is not the same as quality, and ranking is not hands-on testing. Verify model numbers, dimensions, compatibility, safety information, warranty terms, seller identity, and independent reviews before buying.

Perplexity Shopping versus Amazon Alexa for Shopping
Amazon’s shopping assistant was launched as Rufus and renamed Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026. Amazon says it is available across the Amazon Shopping app, desktop experience, product pages, and other shopping surfaces. Its claimed capabilities include product questions, comparisons, personalized recommendations, deal and price tracking, and some agentic purchasing actions. Amazon says the assistant can draw on its catalog, customer reviews, community Q&As, information from across the web, and a customer’s shopping activity. It also describes “Buy for Me” and “Shop Direct” experiences for some products from other merchants. These are Amazon’s own product descriptions: Rufus/Alexa for Shopping announcement, personalized shopping features, and agentic shopping information.

The practical dividing line is strategic: Perplexity competes for discovery and decision-making before a shopper reaches a retailer; Amazon owns a much deeper inventory, checkout, delivery, returns, and account system.

What the Amazon–Perplexity dispute is about
Amazon’s objection
Amazon has objected to Perplexity’s Comet browser agent shopping on Amazon without authorization. Amazon says third-party purchasing agents should respect service-provider decisions and argues that agents can omit important product information, choose inferior prices or delivery methods, complicate returns, and degrade customer service. Those positions appear in Amazon’s public statement and cease-and-desist letter: Amazon’s statement and October 31, 2025 letter.
Perplexity’s position
Perplexity has characterized Amazon’s actions as an incumbent’s attempt to block a competing AI shopping product. Court filings and reporting describe a dispute over whether Comet’s behavior is unauthorized automated access, agentic shopping, or ordinary user-directed browser activity: Perplexity’s opposition filing.
What changed in August 2026
According to Bloomberg Law’s August 2026 reporting, the Ninth Circuit overturned an interim order that had barred Comet from shopping on Amazon. That procedural development did not decide whether Amazon can ultimately block the agent, whether Perplexity violated federal or state law, whether Amazon’s terms prevail, or whether technical restrictions will follow. Risks to check before buying through an AI shopping flow
- Changing availability and price: an answer can become stale before checkout.
- Variant confusion: AI may mix generations, sizes, colors, bundles, refurbished units, or different sellers.
- Incomplete specifications: confirm the manufacturer’s page for safety, dimensions, compatibility, warranty, and model number.
- Merchant-controlled support: the seller—not Perplexity—handles shipping, returns, delivery problems, and fulfillment.
- Ranking opacity: the top recommendation can reflect prompt relevance, ratings, available metadata, and personalization rather than independent testing.
- Saved checkout data: review Perplexity’s current privacy policy and account settings before storing payment or shipping details.
- Cross-border uncertainty: older Shop Like a Pro documentation referred to U.S.-dollar purchases, U.S. shipping, and possible import taxes; verify live terms rather than assuming those historical limits still apply.
- Amazon-agent uncertainty: the Comet litigation means access, permissions, and technical operation on Amazon may change.
Which service fits which shopping job?
- Choose Perplexity for broad research across merchants, unusual constraints, cited explanations, or products outside Amazon’s catalog.
- Choose Amazon when Prime delivery, a large Amazon catalog, saved addresses, order history, deals, reordering, or a single return process matters most.
- Use the retailer directly for configured products, installation, subscriptions, financing, complex warranties, or high-value purchases requiring specialist support.
- Use either assistant as a shortlist tool for safety-critical or compatibility-sensitive products, then verify primary specifications and seller terms yourself.
Perplexity Pro adds expanded access to models, Pro Search, Research, uploads, and related features, but the current Instant Buy documentation says a Pro subscription is not required. The captured help material does not establish a dependable current price; check Perplexity’s live plan page before subscribing. The Pro help page describes the feature set.
Bottom line: a challenge to Amazon’s front door, not its whole back end
Perplexity’s AI Shopping is a real one-stop experience for product discovery, comparison, and selected U.S. checkouts. Its strongest challenge to Amazon is at the front door—the moment a shopper frames a need and decides what to buy. Amazon still has the stronger back end for inventory, delivery, returns, account continuity, and centralized support. Treat Instant Buy as a convenient interface to participating merchants, not as a guarantee that Perplexity is the seller, the shipper, or the final authority on which product is best.
