These are company-reported figures in Meta’s Q2 results release. “Family daily active people” is an average daily measure across Meta’s family of services, not a monthly-user count. The results and guidance are detailed in Meta’s Q2 2026 results release.
Does Meta AI have 500 million users?
The available Q2 earnings materials do not substantiate the specific claim that Meta AI reached 500 million users. That number should not be presented as a confirmed earnings-call milestone without a source that identifies what was counted and when.

“Meta AI” can describe the assistant as a standalone app or its integrations across Meta services. A user figure could refer to monthly active users, people who tried the assistant, app users, or reach across several platforms. Those measures are not interchangeable. Meta’s Q2 comments, as reported in the results release, positioned AI as accelerating its core business, powering new products and opening enterprise opportunities; they do not establish a separate Meta AI revenue line or verify the 500 million-user claim.
Meta also narrowed its 2026 capital-expenditure outlook to $130 billion–$145 billion, underscoring that AI is a major infrastructure investment. That spending is evidence of the scale of the build-out, not proof that the assistant has a particular user count or is independently profitable.

Threads’ verified milestone is 500 million monthly active users
Meta announced on June 16, 2026—before its July earnings call—that Threads had reached 500 million monthly active users. This is a Threads-specific monthly measure, not daily users, Meta AI users or Meta’s total audience. The 275 million figure is not the latest official Threads milestone identified in Meta’s announcement (Meta’s Threads announcement).
The same announcement described product work around communities, including custom community icons and expanded recognition, local communities beginning in Japan, Korea and Taiwan, and the “Your Algo” feed-control feature rolling out in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. These are product updates accompanying the milestone; they do not make the monthly Threads figure directly comparable with Meta’s family daily active people metric.

Why revenue growth did not translate into higher profit
Meta’s advertising indicators were strong: revenue rose 28%, ad impressions increased 14%, and average ad prices rose 12% year over year. Yet costs and expenses rose 55%, while operating income, net income and diluted EPS declined. The widening gap between sales growth and costs pulled operating margin down to 31% from 43%.
Meta attributed part of the expense pressure to $2.40 billion in legal-proceeding charges and $1.18 billion in severance expenses associated with its May 2026 headcount reduction. Quarterly capital expenditures were $31.08 billion, while free cash flow was $784 million, according to the Q2 results release. AI may be supporting advertising and product development, but the release does not isolate how much revenue it generated; infrastructure investment and other costs are already visible in the financial picture.

Meta’s guidance for the next periods sets out the spending and growth targets investors will compare against actual results:

Meta also warned that youth-related trials and other regulatory matters could materially affect results. Legal costs therefore represent both a reported Q2 expense and a continuing source of uncertainty, while the expected AI build-out raises the question of whether future business gains will justify the capital required.
