Re:

How Do I Get a Free Domain Name in 2026?

A free custom domain usually means a first-year promotion tied to a paid plan. Compare renewal and hosting costs, or use a free platform subdomain if you do not need independent ownership.

You can get a domain name at no upfront registration cost, but a custom domain such as yourname.com is usually free only for the first year and only when you buy an eligible annual website plan. A platform subdomain can be free without that purchase, but you do not own the parent domain. If you need only a domain, compare standalone registration and renewal costs before paying for a website plan just to claim a voucher.

What “free domain” can mean

These offers describe three different things. Check which one you are being offered before signing up:

  • A first-year custom domain: A provider waives the initial registration charge for an eligible domain when you buy a qualifying plan. Renewal is normally paid.
  • A platform subdomain: You use an address under a company’s domain, such as yourname.github.io. The provider controls the parent domain; you do not own an independent .com.
  • A domain bundled with hosting: The domain may cost nothing in year one, but the hosting or site-builder plan does not. Judge the bundle by its total cost, not the waived domain charge.

Do not treat a promoted “free domain” as permanent ownership or a free renewal unless the provider’s terms say that explicitly. An unusual or niche extension advertised as free can have changing availability or restrictions, so check the registry and registrar terms rather than relying on an old recommendation.

Get a free first-year domain with WordPress.com

WordPress.com says a new annual plan includes a domain credit for one year; monthly plans do not qualify. The credit can be used to register an eligible new domain or transfer an existing domain, but it cannot renew a domain already registered at WordPress.com. After the free year, the domain renews at its standard price. The provider’s support page says the credit does not expire. See the WordPress.com free-domain terms.

  1. Choose and purchase an eligible annual WordPress.com plan.
  2. In the site dashboard, go to Upgrades → Domains.
  3. Select Search for a domain to register a new one, or I have a domain to transfer one.
  4. Check that the extension qualifies, then review the renewal price and auto-renewal setting before completing the process.
  5. Verify the registrant email if requested and save the renewal date.

WordPress.com’s published domain table reviewed in May 2026 listed standard registration or renewal prices of $13 for .com, $14 for .net, and $12 for .org. Those are the table’s listed prices, not a guarantee of your checkout total; check the current price for your extension and account. See WordPress.com domain pricing and available extensions.

Get a free first-year domain with Wix

Wix offers a one-year domain voucher with selected yearly or multi-year Premium and Studio plans. The offer is tied to an eligible first-time site-plan purchase, is not included with plan renewals, and the voucher is valid for two months after the plan purchase. Wix requires payment information, and the domain renews at the regular price after the first year. A domain bought before the qualifying plan generally cannot have the voucher applied retroactively. Check the voucher terms and redemption instructions.

  1. Confirm that the yearly or multi-year plan, account, and extension qualify before buying.
  2. After purchase, open your Wix account’s Domains or Premium Vouchers area.
  3. Claim the voucher within its two-month validity period, search for an available name, and check the renewal price before accepting.
  4. Review auto-renewal and save the renewal date and cancellation terms.

Wix’s landing page has displayed promotional pricing for some domain offers, but a displayed price for one offer should not be assumed to cover .com, every extension, or renewal. Use the checkout price for the exact name and extension you want. Wix’s domain offer page has current offer details.

Use a free website address without buying a domain

A free platform subdomain is often enough for a student project, prototype, documentation, open-source project, or temporary portfolio. GitHub Pages, for example, provides GitHub-hosted site addresses and supports connecting a custom domain you own. Its documentation describes the platform’s addresses and custom-domain setup: GitHub Pages custom domains.

A subdomain can let you publish without a registration fee or a separate domain purchase. The trade-off is control: the provider controls the parent domain and service, and the platform name remains in your address. That can be a poor fit if you need a stable business identity, portable professional email, or an address you can take to another host. If you later buy a custom domain, connect it using the host’s DNS instructions. GitHub recommends verifying a custom domain before attaching it to a repository to reduce takeover risk; see its domain-management guidance.

Can you get a free .com domain?

Sometimes, for the first year through an eligible paid-plan promotion. A permanently free, independently controlled .com, .net, or .org is not the normal legitimate offer described by these providers. Be skeptical of “free forever” claims unless the current terms clearly explain registration, future renewals, registrant ownership, transfer rights, and DNS control.

Before accepting any offer, check whose account and name will control the registration, who handles renewal, whether you can change DNS settings, and whether you can transfer the domain out. A registered custom domain in your account is different from a platform subdomain: with the latter, you have a service address, not ownership of the parent domain. Transfer eligibility and waiting periods vary, so do not assume a promotional domain can be moved immediately. WordPress.com says a transfer of an existing domain to an eligible plan adds a year to its registration period; that term does not establish transfer rules for every offer. • Dispatch same day for order received before 12 noon
  • Guaranteed packaging
  • No quibbles returns
  • First-year plan or registration charge, including any required annual or multi-year commitment.
  • Second- and third-year domain renewal prices, and whether the quoted price is promotional or recurring.
  • Website hosting or builder renewals if the domain deal requires a plan.
  • Taxes, premium-name charges, and any paid privacy or email features.
  • Whether domain and website-plan auto-renewal are separate, and whether payment information will be charged automatically.
  • Any transfer cost or restrictions that matter if you move providers.

A useful comparison is: two-year total = first-year plan or registration + second-year domain renewal + second-year hosting or site plan + required add-ons and taxes. For a three-year decision, add the third-year renewal and any continuing hosting or add-on charges. These totals depend on extension, plan, location, taxes, and provider; do not compare a promotional first-year number with another provider’s recurring price.

When a low-cost independent domain is the better choice

If you need only the address, a standalone registration plus free or low-cost hosting may cost less than an annual website plan purchased for its domain voucher. Cloudflare Registrar says it registers and renews supported domains at registry and ICANN cost without a registrar markup; that is not free registration. It also offers WHOIS redaction and DNSSEC. Check the live price for the particular name and extension rather than assuming a universal rate. Cloudflare Registrar overview and supported extensions.

  1. Search for the name and confirm that Cloudflare supports its extension.
  2. Review the registration agreement, price, renewal terms, and contact details.
  3. Complete payment and verify the registrant email. Cloudflare says ICANN requires this verification; an unverified registration can be put on hold, with nameservers replaced by parking nameservers until verification is complete.
  4. Configure DNS for your site and check the domain-lock and auto-renewal settings.

Cloudflare-registered domains must use Cloudflare nameservers, so this route does not suit someone who specifically needs another DNS provider. Cloudflare’s registration documentation also says it does not currently support internationalized domain names. Cloudflare registration requirements and limitations.

Avoid bad deals and protect the domain

  • Do not buy a plan just for the word “free.” Compare the full plan cost with buying a domain separately and using suitable free hosting.
  • Read renewal terms before checkout. Check the renewal price, taxes, auto-renewal, and whether canceling the website plan also affects the domain. Domain and site-plan settings may be separate.
  • Confirm who controls the registration. Use an account and contact email you control, and verify whose name appears as registrant. This reduces the chance that an employee, designer, or former agency becomes the only person able to recover it.
  • Check the exact extension and name. Promotions may exclude extensions, and some names may be premium-priced with higher initial or renewal fees. Do not infer the price of your chosen name from another extension’s promotion.
  • Check brand conflicts before registering. Look for existing businesses, trademarks, similar domains, and social handles; a free registration does not remove trademark or brand-confusion risk. Some extensions have additional technical or policy requirements. WordPress.com, for example, notes special requirements affecting .app, .dev, and .page. WordPress.com extension policies.
  • Keep account access and renewal reminders current. Save the registrar login and renewal date, and make sure the registrant email can receive verification and renewal messages.

Expiry recovery rules depend on the provider and extension. As one provider-specific example, Netlify says DNS records stop working after its registered domain expires; its documentation describes a 30-day assistance period, followed by a further 30-day period in which the domain cannot be renewed or purchased, after which it may become publicly available. Do not assume that timeline applies to another registrar. Netlify domain registration and expiry information.

Choose the route that fits your need

Your situation Route to consider Main trade-off
You need a website builder anyway Compare eligible WordPress.com and Wix annual-plan offers The domain credit offsets year one only; include plan and renewal costs.
You need a business domain independent of hosting Register it separately You pay registration and renewal, but can choose hosting separately.
You are testing an idea or publishing a temporary project Use a platform subdomain No independent domain ownership; the address depends on the platform.
You want a low-cost long-term registration and use Cloudflare DNS Compare Cloudflare Registrar’s live price It is not free, and Cloudflare nameservers are required.
You need professional email or expect to change hosts Use a custom domain you control Check email service costs and transfer terms separately.

If the free-domain offer does not work

  1. Recheck the plan and billing period: a monthly plan may not qualify, and Wix limits its voucher to eligible plan purchases.
  2. Confirm that your chosen extension is included and that the name is available; do not assume a promotion covers every extension or premium name.
  3. For Wix, check the voucher area and whether its two-month claim window has passed. For WordPress.com, confirm that you are using the annual-plan credit rather than trying to renew an existing WordPress.com domain.
  4. If the voucher is missing, contact the provider before buying the domain separately; a previously purchased domain may not qualify for retroactive credit.
  5. If registration is complete but the domain does not work, verify the registrant email, the domain’s status, and the DNS records or nameservers required by your host.
  6. If you receive an unexpected renewal charge, check whether domain auto-renewal is separate from the website plan and review the provider’s cancellation and refund terms.
