Dubai uses the UAE dirham (AED), divided into 100 fils. The dirham is pegged to the US dollar, but the peg is not the rate a traveler is guaranteed at a cash counter or on a card. To judge the cost of paying or exchanging money, compare the final AED amount after rates, spreads and fees.
What currency is used in Dubai?
The local currency is the UAE dirham, abbreviated AED. One dirham is divided into 100 fils, as specified in Article 52 of the Central Bank of the UAE rulebook, in force from 16 September 2025. You may see prices written as AED or د.إ.
What is the exchange rate in Dubai?
The dirham is pegged to the US dollar. The Central Bank of the UAE says it intervenes automatically in the foreign-exchange market to maintain that peg. Its Domestic Market Operations page lists intervention rates of USD/AED 3.672 when buying US dollars and 3.673 when selling them (accessed 2026). These are not retail cash quotes or guaranteed card rates. A provider’s spread and fees, as well as a card issuer’s terms, affect what you actually receive or pay.
For currencies other than the US dollar, consult the Central Bank’s daily exchange-rate page. It lists rates for more than 70 currencies for VAT-related obligations. Treat a rate as a dated reference, not an evergreen conversion or a promise about a counter or card transaction.

How should you compare exchange options?
Compare the complete transaction rather than choosing by a headline rate. For the same amount of money, check:
- The final AED amount you will receive or the total amount you will pay.
- The exchange rate and the difference between the provider’s buy and sell rates.
- Any explicit transaction fee.
- Convenience and location.
- For card or ATM use, any fees charged by your card issuer or the ATM operator.
UAE rules require licensed foreign-exchange providers to disclose the applicable rate, buy/sell difference and fees before the transaction. Ask for the final amount before agreeing and keep the receipt. Current comparable retail quotes are not established here, so there is no basis to name one counter as universally best.

Can you use a credit card in Dubai?
Visit Dubai describes phone and bank-card payments across many types of businesses, but that does not guarantee acceptance at every merchant or for every card network. Check your bank’s foreign-transaction and ATM fees before departure, and keep a suitable backup payment method.
Transport has its own payment arrangements. Visit Dubai’s transport guidance says buses accept nol-card payment. Check the current requirements for the particular service you plan to use rather than assuming a bank card works on every mode.

Visit Dubai’s visitor guidance points travelers to exchange offices in the city. Compare the displayed rate, spread, fees and final AED amount at the time you exchange; terms can vary by provider and transaction. The Central Bank’s disclosure requirements give you grounds to ask for these details before proceeding.
