Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate Design is a real, commercially released tri-fold phone—not a concept or a leak. Huawei announced it in China on September 10, 2024, began Chinese sales on September 20, and announced sales in selected international markets in February 2025. Its launch prices were exceptionally high, and a U.S. buyer should treat an import as a costly, region-dependent purchase—not as a standard U.S. phone.
What the Mate XT costs—and what those prices mean
The Mate XT’s prices are tied to specific markets. They are not interchangeable U.S. retail prices: currency conversion alone does not account for local taxes, import charges, warranty coverage, or reseller markups.

Huawei’s February 2025 announcement described a worldwide launch, but sales were for selected markets, not every country. The launch announcement should not be read as confirmation of U.S. carrier distribution. A U.S. buyer is generally looking at an import or gray-market transaction, with the associated support and compatibility questions.
What “tri-fold” gives you
Unlike a conventional book-style foldable with one hinge, the Mate XT uses two hinges and three connected display sections. One section folds inward and another folds outward. That arrangement creates three practical screen states rather than simply a phone and a larger inner screen.

These are Huawei’s listed measurements; the 10.2-inch diagonal is measured as a standard rectangle, so the effective visible area is slightly smaller around the rounded corners. The middle 7.9-inch state is particularly relevant: it offers a larger workspace without opening the entire device. Huawei lists the panel as OLED with an adaptive refresh rate up to 90Hz. The thin 3.6mm figure applies to sections when fully unfolded, not to the folded phone in a pocket. Huawei’s product pages also promote a “Tian Gong” hinge system and a composite ultra-tough structure. Those are manufacturer descriptions of the design, not a substitute for independent long-term durability evidence. The full regional specifications are on Huawei’s specification page.

Software and services depend on the exact version
Huawei lists EMUI 14.2 and HarmonyOS 4.2, reflecting regional or software-configuration differences. A China-market device and an international-market device should not be assumed to offer identical apps, languages, payment services, or update behavior. In particular, a buyer who relies on Google services should verify what works on the exact model and firmware rather than relying on a seller’s broad claim that the phone is “Android-compatible” or that apps are available.
The same caution applies to NFC and wallet functions, banking apps, and mobile-network bands. Huawei’s global specification page lists connectivity categories, but a buyer needs the supported bands and services for the specific regional model and the networks they intend to use.

Camera hardware is not a guarantee of image quality
Huawei markets an XMAGE camera system with a variable-aperture main camera, telephoto camera, and ultra-wide camera. At launch, Huawei also promoted a ten-stop physical variable-aperture claim. Those are hardware and manufacturer claims; they do not establish real-world image quality on their own. The available specifications cited here do not provide a basis for an independent camera-performance verdict.
Repair cost is a major part of the ownership calculation
A tri-fold has two hinges and a larger folding display assembly than a conventional slab phone. A damaged screen can therefore be a significant financial risk, especially if the phone was imported and needs service in its original sales region.

Huawei China support guidance lists a one-time discounted screen-replacement benefit within the first year for eligible accidental damage. For the Mate XT, the listed China service figures are CNY 3,499 for a full new screen assembly or CNY 2,499 for the flexible screen body. These are China-service figures subject to eligibility and coverage conditions, not quoted U.S. repair prices or a promise that parts and service are available locally. Huawei China support guidance.
- Ask whether an official repair center in your country will accept the exact model.
- Confirm the warranty territory and whether accidental damage is covered; do not assume a local warranty follows an import.
- Check whether a protection plan explicitly covers this model and an imported foldable display.
- Get the return policy and repair process in writing before paying a reseller.
What a U.S. buyer should verify before importing
Huawei’s selected-market international release is not the same as ordinary U.S. retail or carrier support. Before treating an import listing as a usable purchase, resolve the following points with the seller and, where applicable, the service provider:

- Model and region: Obtain the exact model number, storage tier, firmware region, and condition. Confirm that the device is the original Mate XT, not the later Mate XTs.
- Network fit: Compare that model’s supported cellular bands with your intended carrier. Do not rely on a generic “5G” label.
- Apps and services: Ask about the specific firmware’s Google-service situation, banking and payment apps, language support, and updates. Verify essential apps yourself before the return window closes.
- Total landed cost: Add seller price, shipping, applicable taxes or duties, payment fees, and any import charges. A currency conversion from the China launch price does not produce a comparable U.S. retail price.
- After-sale support: Confirm who handles returns, warranty claims, parts, and screen repairs, and which country the phone must be sent to.
- Accessories and protection: Check that cases and screen protectors fit the unusual hinge layout, and verify that any insurance covers the exact imported device.
Who might find the price worthwhile?
The Mate XT’s strongest case is for someone who will regularly use the 10.2-inch workspace and values having phone, intermediate-screen, and tablet-like configurations in one device. Documents, multitasking, video, and travel are plausible use cases, but the practical value depends on whether the buyer’s apps and workflow work well on the relevant regional software.
- Consider it if you are an early adopter, can buy in a supported market, have local service and warranty access, and will make frequent use of the larger display.
- Think carefully if replacing both a phone and a small tablet is the central financial justification; compare the total cost and repair exposure with buying two separate devices.
- Skip it if you need dependable U.S. carrier support, Google-dependent workflows, low-cost repairs, or a phone you can drop and service with minimal disruption.
At approximately 298g before the screen protector, it is substantially heavier than an ordinary phone. Its 90Hz maximum is also below the 120Hz refresh rate common on many premium phones. The three display states are unusual and useful for some workflows, but they come with additional moving parts, a large flexible screen, and a folded thickness of about 12.8mm at the thickest listed dimension.
How it compares with the practical alternatives

No alternative is automatically a better buy: compare official local pricing, software support, return rights, and repair coverage in the market where you will use it. A newer model’s price should not be substituted for the original Mate XT’s launch price.
Verdict: a real milestone, but a high-risk luxury purchase
Huawei called the Mate XT its first commercially available tri-fold smartphone as of its September 10, 2024 announcement. It is a shipping product, and its defining advantage is concrete: a 6.4-inch phone can open through a 7.9-inch middle configuration to a 10.2-inch tablet-like display. But the high market-specific launch prices, weight, regional software differences, limited U.S. retail support, and costly China-listed screen service make it difficult to justify as a mainstream phone. For most U.S. readers, an import only makes financial sense if the tri-fold format is worth the support and repair risk to them personally.
