OpenAI announced a nearly $6.5 billion, all-equity acquisition of Jony Ive’s io Products on May 21, 2025. OpenAI already owned 23% of io and agreed to issue another $5 billion in OpenAI equity. The io team officially joined OpenAI on July 9, 2025, while Ive and his LoveFrom firm remained independent. No finished device, model, price or retail launch has been announced.
What OpenAI bought from Jony Ive
io Products was a hardware startup founded by Ive’s collaborators Scott Cannon, Evans Hankey and Tang Tan after Ive and OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman had worked with LoveFrom for about two years. Its stated mission was to create products that “inspire, empower and enable” people while working directly with OpenAI’s research, engineering and product teams.
| Deal detail | What has been disclosed |
|---|---|
| Announcement date | May 21, 2025 |
| Transaction value | Nearly $6.5 billion, structured entirely in OpenAI equity |
| OpenAI’s existing stake | 23% of io before the acquisition |
| Additional consideration | $5 billion in new OpenAI equity |
| io workforce | 55 employees, according to Associated Press reporting |
| Team integration | io officially merged into OpenAI on July 9, 2025 |
That structure matters: the headline describes a transaction valued at billions of dollars, but the disclosed consideration was OpenAI stock rather than a cash payment. The figures also reflect OpenAI’s existing 23% ownership of io, not a purchase of an entirely unrelated company.
Why Sam Altman is making a design-led hardware bet
OpenAI’s argument is that artificial intelligence has advanced faster than the products people use to access it. Its systems can now “see, think and understand,” the company says, while most interactions still happen through conventional screens, keyboards and app menus.

Altman said great tools require work at the intersection of technology, design and understanding people and the world, describing Ive’s team as unusually careful about every part of that process. Ive said the goal was to change what using technology means and recover the delight, wonder and creative spirit he associated with early personal computers.
The strategy is therefore broader than adding an AI feature to an existing gadget. OpenAI is pursuing a family of AI-native products in which the computer’s form, sensors and interaction model are designed around an AI system from the start.
What happened to io’s team and Jony Ive’s role
io’s employees became part of OpenAI’s hardware organization in July 2025. Associated Press reported that Peter Welinder would lead the new hardware division.

Ive and LoveFrom did not become ordinary OpenAI employees or disappear as an independent design firm. They retained their independent status while taking broad design and creative responsibilities across OpenAI. That arrangement gives OpenAI access to Ive’s design leadership without making LoveFrom a wholly owned studio.

What device are OpenAI and Ive making?
There is no confirmed product description. OpenAI has announced no model name, final form factor, specifications, launch price or retail SKU.
Court filings reported by TechCrunch on June 23, 2025 provide the clearest public glimpse. OpenAI and io bought at least 30 sets of headphones for market research, but Tang Tan told the court that the prototype “is not an in-ear device, nor a wearable device.” The prototype was unfinished and, at that point, at least a year away from being advertised or sold.

The filings said the teams were exploring several directions:
- Desktop and mobile products
- Wireless and wired designs
- Wearable and portable concepts
An analyst cited by Associated Press mentioned possibilities such as a car, humanoid robot or AI glasses. Those were examples of what a future physical AI product could be, not announcements from OpenAI.
Axios reported on May 21, 2025 that OpenAI expected its first products from the deal to be shown in 2026. That was an expectation in breaking-news coverage, not a confirmed launch date, and it does not establish that a product will be available for purchase in 2026.

Is the OpenAI–Jony Ive device available to buy?
No. As of the information publicly disclosed after the merger, there is no announced retail device, preorder, price, model number or official compatibility list. The court filings described an unfinished prototype, not a product ready for sale.
Consumers should also ignore listings that claim to be the official io device unless OpenAI identifies the seller and product through its own channels. There is currently no confirmed accessory, replacement item or existing headphone that can be treated as a substitute for the unreleased hardware.

What to watch when OpenAI releases more details
OpenAI’s current disclosures leave the most important buying questions unanswered. A credible evaluation should compare any announced products on these points:
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Form factor | Portable, desktop and wearable products impose different battery, comfort and repair trade-offs. |
| Interaction model | Screen, voice and ambient sensing affect accessibility, privacy and how reliably tasks can be completed. |
| Computing relationship | A phone or laptop companion has different cost and setup requirements from a replacement device. |
| Privacy and data handling | Always-listening or camera-equipped hardware can create exposure beyond ordinary app use. |
| Release timing and region | A product shown in 2026 may not ship then, or may launch first in only selected markets. |
| Price and ecosystem compatibility | The purchase decision depends on recurring fees, accessories and support for existing devices. |
Key dates in the io deal
- September 2023: io was incorporated in Delaware, according to Associated Press reporting.
- April 2024: The company registered in California.
- May 21, 2025: OpenAI announced the nearly $6.5 billion all-equity acquisition.
- June 23, 2025: TechCrunch reported court-filing details about the unfinished prototype and product exploration.

The bottom line for readers
OpenAI bought into Jony Ive’s design organization to build a new category of AI hardware, not to release a known pair of headphones or smart glasses. The transaction was valued at nearly $6.5 billion in OpenAI equity, the io team is now inside OpenAI, and Ive remains an independent design partner. Until OpenAI publishes a final form factor, price and sale date, any specific device description or shopping recommendation is speculation.
